Prince Henry was born into the royal family of Portugal.
Portugal is next to Spain and close to western Africa.

Triangular Trade Route
The trade routes from Europe, Africa, and the
Americas became known as the Triangular Trade Route and became very
lucrative to the European continent.
Great Britain and Spain began to dominate the slave trade in the later
years.

Sad to say, but the Portuguese were the first to enslave West Africans. In 1441, one of Prince Henry's ships came home with the first Africans.
They were sold as slaves in Europe.

As early as 1502 Portugal was shipping enslaved Africans to the Caribbean and Brazil to work on sugar cane plantations.
