1 – The Greek theatreImpressive, solemn, intriguing, with stunningviews. It may happen that, while sitting on thebig stone steps , you hear the voices of thegreat Greek heroes, Agamemnon, Medea orOedipus, even if there are no actors on thestage …this is such an evocative place!It keeps evidences of several historic periods,from the prehistoric ages to Late Antiquity andthe Byzantine era. The Greek Theatre is one ofthe biggest in the world, entirely carved intothe rock. In ancient times it was used for playsand popular assemblies, today it is the placewhere the Greek tragedies live again throughthe Series of Classical Performances that takeplace every year thanks to the INDA, NationalInstitute of Ancient Drama. At sunset, or maybeeven with a full moon, here, on the stairs of theGreek theatre, we will enjoy a wonderfulexperience.

2 – Ear of DionysiusThe legendary Ear of Dionysius is the most famous cave inSiracusa. It’s called this way for its ear shape and above allfor its remarkable acoustic properties which amplify thesounds inside it. According to the legend, the tyrantDionysus used it as a jail and he used to eavesdrop on theprisoners’ conversations. It’s an artificial cave located in anancient stone quarry called Latomia del Paradiso, placedunder the Greek Theatre of Siracusa.

Surrounded bymagnificent baroque palaces it is the core of the civil andreligious life of Ortygia, the ancient city of Syracuse, aUNESCO heritage. Stop: take a break, sit down for a drinkand enjoy the atmosphere! The Cathedral is anexceptional case of mixed architecture: a pagan templeand at the same time a Christian church. It stands on theruins of a temple dedicated to Athena that was built in480 BC. and, behind its baroque façade, it keeps a jewelof the past with the Doric columns still visible bothoutside and inside. At the back of the square you canfind the church of Santa Lucia alla Badia, which housesthe painting of Caravaggio “The Burial of Saint Lucy”.

5 – Museo Archeologico Regionale Paolo OrsiIt is one of the most important and prestigious museumsof archaeology in Europe. On display, there are piecesdating from the prehistory to the Greek-Roman period,coming from excavations in the city and other places ofSicily.

6 – Sanctuary of Madonna delle LacrimeA charming place, where you breathe an atmosphere of peace,tranquility and mysticism. The structure, very impressive, wasbuilt in memory of a miracle occurred in 1953: the lacrimation ofa plaster effigy of the Virgin Mary. The Shrine houses someprecious memories of this extraordinary event: the originalpainting, a piece of cloth that covered the picture, ahandkerchief soaked with the Virgin Mary’s tears and evensome crystallized tears.

8 – Temple of ApolloThe magnificence of these Greek ruins can be immediatelynoticed when arriving to the small island of Ortygia.It is the oldest Doric temple in Sicily and its story has beenvery troubled over the time. It was first a Christian church, thena mosque, then again a Norman church and finally a barracks atthe time of Charles V. In the evening, thanks to the lights of thecity, you can enjoy a unique spectacle.

7 – Maniace Castle and EurialoCastleIf you like castles, you are in theright place: these are among themost picturesque castles of theIsland.

Maniace Castle is named after the ByzantineCommander Giorgio Maniace. It’s a true symbol of thepower and the genius of Emperor Federico II, who built itupon an ancient fort between 1232 and 1240. Immersed inthe colors of the sea, is the most extreme flap of OrtigiaIsland.

Eurialo Castle is one of the largest and mostcomplete military works of the Greekperiod. It was built by Dionysus I, the tyrantof Syracuse, in order to complete the greatdefensive system called Dionysian walls,which ran alongside the edge of the plateauof Epipoli. Walking through the ruins is likegoing back in time as they still resound withthe clatter of the soldiers’ sandals.

10 – Piazza ArchimedePiazza Archimede, dedicated to the famous mathematician andphysicist, born in Siracusa, includes the Fontana Diana whichtells the myth of Alpheus and Arethusa. It dates back to the 9thcentury and is surrounded by buildings that tell the history ofSicily, from the Middle Ages to the present day.

9 – Fonte AretusaThe fountain originates in a fresh water spring andcreates a small semicircular lake with fishes, geeseand ducks and where the plants of the only naturalPapyrus (Papireto) in Europe grow luxuriantly. Nearby,inside a restaurant, you can visit for free an AncientWashhouse dating back to the eighteenth century. Itsname comes from the legend of the nymph Arethusa,who, wanting to escape from the impetuous loveof Alpheus, jumped into the sea and reached Ortigiaisland. Here the goddess Diana, sad because of thisextreme reaction, turned her into a spring. Alpheus, inturn, transformed into a river whose waters crossedthe sea and busted out into a water source close toArethusa, so they could join together forever.
