“The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it.” Michelangelo

PRASTHITA 20

Dearest $love, I woke up in the morning to find every bit in my body wait-ing to be with you. It has been a very long wait for today. Al-though my heart has only your image, my brain has split itself into many threads each executing only your command.

I remember the first day we met. Our hearts reached con-sensus without any external memory. I was a dangling pointer containing your address but no ownership over you. As I tried to deference the location, I crashed. There were not one but many clients trying to connect to you. But this did not deter me. I relent-lessly tried to reach you. My messages to you were sent through different routers but they were all prevented from reaching you. All my SYN packets were dropped. When finally I decided to close my connection, I received your ACK. The very thought of being preempted made my heart bloom like the heat generated by a million processors all in busy-wait. When you saw me you realized that I was not a spurious host. I was a trusted source as I was linearly separable from the rest.

TECHNICAL LOVE LETTER

PRASTHITA 21

But when our class separation decreased I saw more dis-tinct features. owever, I could neither decode your enciphered smile nor track your mosaiced lips. Your gaze brought me to your frontal view nullifying my external parameters. I stared at you as thousands of thoughts enqued in my memory waiting to be dequeued. No amount of data mining could have extracted the three simple words that you said to me then. Within no time, all my thoughts automatically dequeued. Those evergreen images registered in my mind instantly even though infinite amount of images would have been impossible to reconstruct the scene. It is on this day last year that we first met. My memory of the day has never got corrupted and when I think about you I also think about the first time that I met you. Compile me into you and I promise to link with you. I will load both your sorrows and hap-pinessequallyall my life.Always yours,

The Nuts And Bolts-[Technology Behind] Social networking is the art of connecting with those who share common interests. With the word “Social Networking”, the only thing which strikes everybody’s mind is ‘Facebook’. This website is the world’s largest social networking website, with about 500 million users. On the front view, the site looks so user-friendly but Facebook’s inner workings, its architecture and fron-tend/backend infrastructure, the nuts and bolts that hold Facebook together is diversified.

Facebook uses a variety of services, tools, and programming languages to make up its core infrastructure. At the front end, their servers run a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP) stack with Memcache .Let’s take a closer view.

Linux & Apache

Linux is a Unix-like computer operating system kernel. It’s open source, very customizable, and good for security. And Apache is the most popular open source web server in use. Face-book runs the Linux operating system on Apache HTTP Servers.

EvEr wOndered , How Facebook WORKS?

PRASTHITA 23

MySQL

For the database, Facebook utilizes MySQL because of its speed and reliability. MySQL is used primarily as a key-value store as data is randomly distributed amongst a large set of logical in-stances. These logical instances are spread out across physical nodes and load balancing is done at the physical node level.

PHP Facebook uses PHP because it is a good web programming language with extensive support and an active developer commu-nity and it is good for rapid iteration. PHP is a dynamically typed/interpreted scripting language.

Memcache Memcache is a memory caching system that is used to speed up dynamic database-driven websites (like Facebook) by caching data and objects in RAM to reduce reading time. Memcache is Face-book’s primary form of caching and helps alleviate the database load. Having a caching system allows Facebook to be as fast as it is at recalling your data. If it doesn’t have to go to the database it will just fetch your data from the cache based on your user ID.Facebook’s backend services are written in a variety of different programming languages including C++, Java, Python, and Erlang.

PRASTHITA 24

Thrift (protocol)

Thrift is a lightweight remote procedure call framework for scalable cross-language services development. Thrift supports C++, PHP, Python, Perl, Java, Ruby, Erlang, and others. It’s quick, saves development time, and provides a division of labour of work on high-performance servers and applications.Scribe (log server)

Scribe is a server for aggregating log data streamed in real-time from many other servers. It is a scalable framework useful for logging a wide array of data. It is built on top of Thrift.

Cassandra (database)

Cassandra is a database management system designed to han-dle large amounts of data spread out across many servers. It powers Facebook’s Inbox Search feature and provides a structured key-val-ue store with eventual consistency.

HipHop for PHP HipHop for PHP is a source code transformer for PHP script code and was created to save server resources. HipHop transforms PHP source code into optimized C++. After doing this, it uses g++ to compile it to machine code.

1.Be Trustworthy Trust is the basis for almost all the relationships in your life. Without trust, it's impossible to create healthy and productive environments, either with work or personal situations.

2.Inspire People to Work Toward The Vision In any sort of management role, it is quite common to hear people refer to the "big picture". This is just a cliché way to describe creating and inspir-ing a vision.

3.Be Self Aware and Insightful About Your Impact On Others One of the most important qualities of good leadership is that the in-dividual is aware of him or herself ... their abilities and the impact that they have on others

4.Accept Responsibility for Your Actions Those who have qualities of good leadership never pass the buck. In fact, the best leaders will not only take responsibility for their own mis-takes, but also shield their team from negative consequences, going to bat for them.

5.Lead versus Manage There is quite a fine line between these two styles. While a leader may certainly manage, managers rarely lead. Developing the qualities of good leadership found on this page and over at them What Makes A Good Leader page, will enable you to understand this minute difference, most of which has to do with your attitude and how you truly value those who you work with.

6.Have High Self Worth and Self Esteem You might not think that how you feel about yourself has a whole lot to do with how others perceive you or how effective you can be at taking

leadership Qualities

to do with how others perceive you or how effective you can be at taking charge of a group situation. However, it would be a huge mis-take to make this assumption. Every individual is either their own best friend or their own worst enemy.

How they got derived…

There are many companies / brands / products whose names were derived from strange circumstances/things/happenings.

Google The name started as a joke boasting about the amount of infor-mation the search-engine would be able to search. It was originally named Googol’, a word for the number represented by 1 followed by 100 zeros. After founders- Stanford graduate students Sergey Brin and Larry Page presented their project to an angel investor, they received a cheque made out to ‘Google’ …thus the name.

Apple Computers It was the favorite fruit of founder Steve Jobs. He was three months late in filing a name for the business, and he threatened to call his company Apple Computers if the other colleagues didn’t suggest a better name by 5 O’clock that evening.

Hotmail Founder Jack Smith got the idea of accessing e-mail via the web from a computer anywhere in the world. When Sabeer Bhatia came up with the business plan for the mail service, he tried all kinds of names ending in ‘mail’ and finally settled for hotmail as it included the letters “html” – the programming language used to write web pages. It was initially referred to as HoTMaiL with selective uppercasing.

Yahoo! The word was invented by Jonathan Swift and used in his book ‘Gulliver’s Travels’. It represents a person who is repulsive in appear-ance and action and is barely human. Yahoo! Founders Jerry Yang and PRASTHITA 28

Filo selected the name because they considered themselves yahoos.

Microsoft Coined by Bill Gates to represent the company that was devoted to MICROcomputer SOFTware. Originally christened Micro-Soft, the ‘-’ was removed later on.

CISCOIt is not an acronym as popularly believed. It is short for San Francisco .Hewlett Packard Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard tossed a coin to decide whether the company they founded would be called Hewlett-Packard or Pack-ard-Hewlett.

Intel Bob Noyce and Gordon Moore wanted to name their new compa-ny ‘ Moore Noyce’but that was already trademarked by a hotel chain so they had to settle for an acronym of INTegrated ELectronics.

ORACLE Larry Ellison and Bob Oats were working on a consulting project for the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency). The code name for the proj-ect was called Oracle (the CIA saw this as the system to give answers to all questions or something such). The project was designed to helpuse the newly written SQL code by IBM. The project eventually was terminated but Larry and Bob decided to finish what they started and bring it to the world. They kept the name Oracle and created the RD-BMS engine. Later they kept the same name for the company.

SMART QUILL

Smart Quill is slightly larger than an ordinary fountain pen. Us-ers can enter information into these applications by pushing a but-ton on the pen and writing down what they would like to enter .The SmartQuill does not need a screen to work. The really clever bit of the technology is its ability to read handwriting not only on paper but on any flat surface – horizontal or vertical. There is also a small three-line screen to read the information stored in the pen; users can scroll down the screen by tilting the pen slightly. The user trains the pen to recognize a particular handwriting style – no matter how messy it is, as long as it is consistent, the pen can recognize it. The handwritten notes are stored on hard disk of the pen. The pen is then plugged into an electronic “inkwell”, text data is transmitted to a desktop comput-er, printer, or modem or to a mobile telephone to send files electroni-cally. Up to 10 pages of notes can be stored locally on the pen. A tiny light at the tip allows writing in the dark. When the pen is kept idle for some time, power gets automatically off.

India …as i saw it in the year 2050 One evening I went for a walk in the woods when suddenly I stumbled upon a cave. The cave was blocked by a big boulder. With great effort and force,I managed to remove the boulder. On entering PRASTHITA 32

on the door was written , “Enter inside”. On entering inside,I saw a big electronic panel and there was a button on which was written ,”Press me”. With cold and deft fingers,I pressed it and immediately I was sent 50 years in the future. Yes ,it was a time machine. Sud-denly 5 robots leaped on me and with a laser beam they arrested me and took me to their emperor, “ The so called Master Robo”. He had thousands of attachments on his metal body and had the intelligence of 90 thousands robots and infact he had a computer for his head. On seeing me he remarked ,” Oh! Anotherof those foolish, repulsive hu-mans who created us? Take him away to the prison of humans where all the earth’s human beings are locked. Then he addresses the other robots and said ,” I don’t know how this human got away without dy-ing when we spread radiation bomb on the whole earth and captutred all the humans ?” Next, I was taken to the big prison where I saw a few thousands of people only. Later I got to know that the rest of earth’s population had died in the radiation bomb and infact each day one or the other was dying of hunger, thirst and pure torture by man’s own creation. Every one had to do mining in prison to get fuel which was used as food by the robots to work else,he or she would be burst instantly by the lasers of one of the robots. No onbe had any ray of hope were so helpless that they had nothing to do but weep all the time and pray to God. People were used to losing their dear ones everyday. Several computers were watching everyone and anyone who was seen rest-ing even for a second was blown to bits by the computer which was programmed to do so. Man had nothing to do but himself to destiny. He was eventually governed by his own creation. I was horrified and most of all bewildered and shocked by all this that I quickly returned

PRASTHITA 33

back to the present, rushing to tell everyone what was awaiting them in the future and how they could avoid getting into that kind of plight. Just as I came out of the cave,I heard an explosion right behind me, I rushed back only to see that the time machine had burst. Now no one will see the truth in my story and would think that it is a made up story or probably I was dreaming it all and hallucinating evrything. But Oh God ! Do believe me,it is very true. But no one, believes me and soon we will be also enslaved by those ‘tins cans’ as I call them. If only some one would believe me , if only…..if only………

The Power of the Printed Word

I have often wondered when writing a book review…….how many people are really going to browse through the page? It is really a sad territory to tread on. There is no mincing matters here. An indi-vidual's intimate relationship with books is a thing of the past. I am speaking in generic terms, there will always be exceptions and thank God for them. When I am talking of books I am of course referring to those that are meant for bringing happiness and contentment. As far as information and research is concerned, I accept the supremacy of the internet as far as convenience is concerned. If you just care to give a search on google on this topic you will be surprised at the number of people who actually sound intensely anguished that their children, or the 'young generation' for that matter have been overtaken by the internet and other audio-visual media. It

PRASTHITA 34

is my opinion that 'today's generation' is just a convenient and ready ploy for transferring responsibility that should ideally be one's own. It is impossible to miss out the irony of complaining about the inter-net on a website. Why not get the precious opinion printed if it really matters that much. Can you think of the last time when you have presented someboy a book for a gift? Even if the thought does cross your mind, you will pause and weigh the option again and again. Does he like books…Will he have the time…and so on and so forth. Finally you end up with something that is fairly neutral as far as taste is con-cerned. Safe choice no doubt but not as expressive of thoughtful care as a book in any way. There can be nothing more painful for a book lover than to watch somebody read an e-version of a favourite masterpiece. It is completely devoid of the sensuous pleasure of touch, of turning the pages, of lying down on the couch with the feet curled up. You see, the pleasure of reading books is not limited to the mind alone. True, the primary aim is mental stimulation, in whatever form, but then sometimes the vehicles are more sensory for all you know. A book is a personal possession, at least at the moment of reading it and it has the capability of transporting the reader to the world that the covers contain within them. It is not something that any e-environment will be able to create. But the most important and yet the most obscure reason for this trend of books losing favour happens to be a contemporary lack of imagination. It would not be wrong to say that the break-neck pace of modern life has been responsible in generating an apathy that has overtaken the normal processes of thought. Add to that a lack of pa-tience and you have a more or less complete answer. It is precisely

PRASTHITA 35

thought and imagination that books seek to inspire and what good is reading if you lack both.

All I remember is… (A poem about IT)

A computer was something on TVFrom a sci fi show of note.A window was something you hated to cleanAnd ram was the cousin of goat.

Meg was the name of my girlfriendAnd gig was a job for the nights. Now they all mean different thingsAnd that really mega bytes.

An application was for employment.A program was a TV show.A curser used profanity.A keyboard was a piano.

Memory was something that you lost with age.A CD was a bank account. And if you had a 3 1/2” floppyYou hoped nobody found out.

PRASTHITA 36

Compress was something you did to the garbageNot something you did to a file. And if you unzipped anything in publicYou’d be in jail for a while.

Log on was adding wood to the fire.Hard drive was a long trip on the road.A mouse pad was where a mouse lived. And a backup happened to your commode.

Cut you did with a pocket knife.Paste you did with glue.A web was a spider’s home. And a virus was the flu

I guess I’ll stick to my pad and paperAnd the memory in my head.I hear nobody’s been killed in a computer crash,But when it happens they wish they were dead.
