February 12, 2015 Dear Parents/Guardians, The Prairieview Student Council’s purpose is to support the Prairieview community. All third and fourth graders are given the opportunity to join the student council by submitting an application explaining their interest in being a member. Responsibility is one of the most important life skills of student council members, and students show that responsibility by planning and running many school wide events. One program the student council participates in is running the PV General Store. This program instills real life skills such as responsibility with fulfilling their individual “jobs”, counting money, as well as informing the school community of upcoming events/fundraisers, and communicating with the student body. In the first half of the year, we focused on recycling, opening the PV General Store, and helping promote Red Ribbon Week. These activities required effort, perseverance, and integrity showing that all students can be responsible citizens. For the remainder of the year, the Prairieview Student Council will continue to model and promote the life skills. The proceeds earned by Student Council will be given back to the Prairieview Community as well as other organizations. As always, students are also rewarded for displaying all of the qualities and characteristics of productive citizens, including respect, responsibility, caring, cooperation, honesty and trustworthiness. It is the goal of Student Council to instill these characteristics not only in its members, but also the Prairieview Community at large. We hope that they take their life skills with them outside of the school community and into their everyday lives. Thank you for your support!

Volunteer Opportunities HELP WANTED !! we are seeking the help of two parents for book fair next year! This is a large fundraiser for the PTO and these funds help supplement many school activities including field trips, school assemblies, library books, family events and much more. In addition, the children really enjoy attending the book fairs. Should there be no parental involvement, the school would be faced with decreased funds and disappointed students. Dear Parent/Guardian,

During the week of February 9-12, at your child’s conference, teachers, parents, and students across Illinois will have an opportunity to participate in the third annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of your child’s school. As a parent, this opportunity will allow you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness in a survey about your child’s school.

On behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey will be administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. These five indicators that affect and predict school success are:

• Effective Leaders • Collaborative Teachers • Involved Families • Supportive Environments • Ambitious Instruction

Prior research in more than 400 schools has shown that schools that were strong on at least three of these “5Essential” indicators were 10 times more likely to improve student learning gains in math and reading than those that were weak on three or more Essentials.

All teachers and 6th through 12th grade students will be responding to this survey. 5Essentials Reports will be generated for schools if their teachers and/or students meet the response rate threshold of 50 percent. These reports will be sent to schools and districts in May 2015 and will also be included in the State School Report Card.

Additionally, your district has chosen to provide the optional 5Essentials parent survey. If at least 20 percent of parents complete this survey, a parent supplement will also be generated. The parent data will not be reported on the State Report Card.

Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will help us understand the conditions at your child’s school and guide improvement. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child.

The Illinois 5Essentials Survey will be conducted February 9 through February 12, 2015. To take the survey please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ and select the appropriate survey to begin.

For more information about the Illinois 5Essentials Survey, or to view 2014 Reports, please visit https://illinois.5-essentials.org. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact 5Essentials Client Services at 1-866-440-1874 or [email protected]. Sincerely, Ellen Correll

Sinceramente, Ellen Correll

February 2015 What is measles? Measles is a highly contagious respiratory, viral disease that causes fever, red and sore eyes, runny nose, cough, cold symptoms, and a characteristic rash that typically starts on the head and spreads to the rest of the body. The disease can cause severe health complications, including pneumonia and encephalitis. How$is$it$spread?$Measles is transmitted by contact with an infected person through coughing or sneezing and can remain in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours. Infected people are contagious from four days before their rash starts through four days afterwards. How can you prevent it? The Illinois Department of Public Health and the Cook County Department of Public Health say vaccinations are the safest, most effective way to protect individuals from measles and other potentially dangerous communicable diseases. Children who are under the age of one or with certain clinical conditions cannot be vaccinated and are therefore at highest risk for measles. "Residents are strongly encouraged to get vaccinated to protect themselves and the most vulnerable members of the community," IDPH said in a statement. **The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said one dose of measles vaccine or MMR is about 93 percent effective at preventing measles if exposed to the virus, and two doses is about 97 percent effective. Typically, measles cases have a history of exposure to a confirmed case of measles or travel to or contact with visitors from areas where cases have been reported. Even though we take measles very seriously, we also want to provide a reminder that other viral illnesses and reactions to antibiotics can cause a rash that may appear similar to measles. CCSD 46 has a 99% compliance rate with vaccines. If your child should experience all the symptoms listed above, please see your health care provider as soon as possible. With these symptoms, your student should NOT be sent to school until evaluated by a doctor. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
