Prarieview Media Center News Mrs. Innes and Mrs. Persha There is a lot going on in the Media Center! We hope you take the time to join us and see your student’s work on Wednesday, January 29! Our kindergarten and first graders continue to learn their way around the fiction and nonfiction shelves. Our second through fourth grade students are using Destiny, our library catalog, to help them find books that they would like to read. Did you know that you can access this catalog from home? It is located under that Parents and Students Tab on our D46 website, just choose Prairieview and you can search our online catalog to find a just right book. Here is a direct link: http://library.d46.org, then choose Prairieview. Have your students show you how! We have a great library collection and are working hard to add new books. Thanks to our PTO, we were able to add some books to our library from the book fair as well. Our Prairieview students get to vote in two Illinois Book Award contests. Students in kindergarten, first and second

grade read or listen to 5 out of the 20 Monarch Book Award nominees and will vote for the book that they think deserves the award in late February. Third and Fourth graders get to vote on the book they think should win the Bluestem Award. These are chapter books and they need to read or listen to 4 books to vote. Bluestem voting will take place between Feb. 15 - March 15. Check out the websites for the lists of nominated books: http://www.islma.org/monarch.htm and http://www.islma.org/Bluestem.htm. We are blogging again this year! We are using Kidblog.org, which is a free blogging site that requires log ins and allows students to add pictures and movies as well as their text. Have you visited your child’s blog? You can use your student’s log in, to access the blogs. Feel free to leave comments for your child, just make sure you sign your name. We blog about what is happening in our classes, physical education, art, music, anything! Check them out! Third and fourth graders are still working on typing with all ten fingers. This is a very

important skill that needs to be learned correctly. Most classes are using Typing Web. http://www.typingweb.com/tutor/. They can use this at home as well. Even if their class isn’t using it you can create a free log in! You might even want to try it for yourself and challenge you children to a race! First and second graders are learning where the letters are by playing one of our favorite games, Super Hyper Typer Spider. Another favorite is BBC Dance Mat Typing http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/. You can find the link to this and other educational games on our D46 websites, under the Parents and Students tab, then choose Student Educational Links. Keyboarding games can be found by clicking on the Reference button. A snapshot from the Art Room: In KINDERGARTEN we are reading lots of books in art that inspire and connect to our art making. Students are learning about many different kinds of media and using pattern, collage, printing, mosaic, drawing, cutting, texture, and painting.

FIRST graders have experimented with color mixing, created visual texture, and made self-portraits. We have been learning how to use art tools correctly as well as practicing our cutting, drawing, folding and painting skills. SECOND graders have learned about warm and cool colors, the differences between a background, middle ground and foreground in a landscape picture, and how 2D squiggly lines and patterns can be used to create a 3D paper sculpture. We are now working on using organic and geometric shapes in art. THIRD graders drew animals with patterns, experimented with positive and negative space, created origami bookmarks, and drew some amazing analogous colored chameleons. We are now painting a rainbow of Blue Dogs like the artist George Rodrigue. FOURTH graders worked on blending oil pastels, drawing organic shapes, used simple shapes to create distinguished nutcracker drawings and experimented with sculpture using a simple piece of foil. Students are now inventing

unique tessellations inspired by Escher. All of our art classes participated in International Dot Day inspired by Peter Reynolds. We read “The Dot” and decorated almost all of the hallways of Prairieview with our own dots. We were very lucky to be able to connect with a classroom in Italy and share our masterpieces, as well as see what they were creating half way across the world! I am looking forward to our annual Art Showcases in this spring where we will be exhibiting all the magnificent artwork our students have been creating. If you would like to volunteer and help set up the show, please contact me by email at [email protected]. PV PE UPDATE: Hello from Mr. Hart and Mrs. Morton! It has been fun getting the kids back into Physical Education for 2014! We’re kicking off the New Year with a Hockey Unit and Fitness Testing. All grades will be participating in Hockey

skills, activities, and small games. Fitness testing is for grade levels 2nd, 3rd, and 4th to assess their flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, speed, agility, muscular endurance and strength. This is our second round of these tests. The students also participated in these assessments at the beginning of the year. These tests include shuttle run, sit and reach, PACER (progressive aerobic cardiovascular endurance run), sit-ups and push-ups. Ask your children about the test! We enter these scores into our district wide PE assessment program called FitStats. These tests will transfer to other schools in the district as they move up in grade levels as well as to the Grayslake High School. This gives PE teachers, parents and students the ability to see how each student has progressed in physical fitness over time. Their fitness scores will go home with the second trimester report cards. Have any questions, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help! Mrs. Morton [email protected] Mr. Hart [email protected] !
