September 30, 2016 Dear Parents and/or Guardians, We are very much looking forward to meeting with you next week. Our hope for fall conferences is to begin the year by setting attainable goals for your child’s learning. The purpose of the first conference is to give parents and teachers time to set goals and develop strategies and approaches that meet the needs of each child’s unique learning style. Goal setting is important. When children are successful at setting and reaching goals, they not only feel good about themselves, but they become more invested in their own learning. The first conference provides time for parents and teachers to work together to help the child set specific, attainable goals. We hope the following tips are helpful to you as you prepare for your child's conference and as you reflect on the process for the remainder of the year: Plan ahead. Ask your child if there is anything he/she would like you to bring up during the meeting. You may want to write down any questions you have on a piece of paper. Think of yourself as a partner with the teacher. You can work together to come up with ideas and goals to help your child achieve success in school. Please come at your scheduled time. If the teacher is engaged in a conference at your scheduled time, knock on the door to let the teacher know you are there. Share the details of the conference with your child. Let him/her know that everyone has strengths and areas for growth. Finally, refer back to the plan, created by you and the teacher, for your child’s learning this year. Goals are most successful when we keep them at the forefront of our decision-making and revisit them often. We value your thoughts regarding your child's learning. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call me or your child’s teacher.

Sinceramente, Vince Murray El Director

PV PTO Updates It is going to be an exciting couple of weeks at PV! Check your child’s backpack for Yankee Candle brochures, Hot Chocolate Run/ Walk flyers, and Book Fair hours. Our goal this year is to do more events that will not only raise money, but will be fun family friendly events. Yankee Candle has been a very popular brochure style fundraiser and if it continues to be successful, it will be the only fundraiser of that type for the rest of the school year! During Parent/Teacher Conference week, the PTO will have the Scholastic Book Fair set up on the PV stage. Please stop by and see what new books are being offered. Children will be going through the book fair with their class to make a wish list so when you come in for conferences you know what books have caught their eye. If you wish to send money for the book fair with your child to spend during the school day, please include enough to cover the tax. Also, to encourage these young shoppers to choose books instead of silly pens and erasers, we will not have these items available during the school day. However, in our after school hours we will puts these items out so parents can decide if they’d like their child to have something from this table. We hope this will encourage children to choose books and will lessen the amount of trinket type items coming home with children. The PTO website: https://prairieviewschoolpto.shutterfly.com now has a volunteer tab where you see what volunteer opportunities we have available and can sign up right directly from the website.

Thank you! ! ! ! !

A HUGE thank you to all of the families that that came out to Culver’s earlier this month to not only enjoy a delicious dinner, but to help the school. We had 14 teachers and staff from PV volunteer their time to make this event so wonderful- we could not have done it without all of you! The evening was a huge success, helping the PTO to raise over $500!!!! Thank you everyone for making this event possible.

September Cool Tool Responsibility

This month’s lifeskill is responsibi l ity. Use some of the ideas below to reinforce this concept and practice being responsible at home. What is responsibi l ity?

• Being accountable for what you do, for your actions and behavior. • Doing the right thing at the right time, so others can depend on you and trust

you.

What are ways you can show responsibi l ity? • Complete your homework and chores on time without being reminded. • Follow through on your commitments, even when you don't feel like it. • Accept responsibility for your mistakes and learn from them. Don't make

excuses or blame others. • Take care of your things and those of other people. Return items you borrow. • Find out what needs to be done and do it. • Make wise choices, such as choosing to eat healthy foods and wearing a helmet. • Always do your very best. Others are counting on you!

How would you demonstrate responsibi l ity if...

• You broke the wheel off your brother's new skateboard? • Your friend asks you to play and you haven't finished your homework? • You're playing a really fun game at your friend's house and it's time to go

home? • You promised your mom or dad you would clean your room but you just don't

feel like it? • It is time to go to bed and you just remembered that your book report is due

tomorrow? • You agreed to take care of your neighbor's dog while she is away, but now a

friend has invited you to a sleepover? • Your mom is not feeling well and could really use some extra help around the

house? • You forgot to bring your homework home from school, including the book you

need to study for tomorrow's test?

Remember only you have the ability to have responsibility. Be a person others can trust and count on to do the right thing!

Dear Parents and Families:

Reading for pleasure inside and outside of school has real and long-lasting benefits. It unlocks the power of information and imagination and helps children discover who they are. It will even help them get into college! Here’s what you can do to help children develop stronger reading skills and a love for reading:

x Set the example. Let children see you read.

x Have a collection of books in the home. Update this collection routinely to keep pace with changing tastes and reading skills. Talk about books and what your child is reading.

x Support our school’s Book Fair. Allow your children to choose their own books to read.

Our Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event that brings the books kids want to read to our school. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child’s reading habits.

Book Fair dates: October 3-6Shopping hours: Monday: 9am-2pm, Tuesday and Wednesday: 9am-2pm, 3-5pm, Thursday: 11:30-8pm

Before you visit the Book Fair, be sure to download the Book Fairs app to help you find the right books for your child. For more information, visit scholastic.com/apps/bookfairs.

If you are unable to attend in person, we invite you to visit our online Book Fair at scholastic.com/fair. Our online Fair is available from September 30th to October 8th.

We look forward to seeing you and your family at our Book Fair! Remember, all purchases benefit our school.

Sincerely,

Vince MurrayPrincipal - 1
