We welcome you to join us at our meetings. We have two opportunities for public comments at our meetings, or join us on our live video stream which is linked on meeting days on the district website . General Meeting October 19, 2016 The October 19th general meeting, held at Park Campus, was called to order at 6:45PM. There were five board members in attendance. At the first opportunity for public comments three members of the Carillon North community spoke regarding the tax levy and seniors living on a fixed incore. A petition was given to Board Vice President Jim Weidman. A special acknowledgement was made to CCSD 46 community member and parent of a Park Campus student, Mr. Jim O'Malley. Mr. O'Malley was introduced by Board Member David Northern, Jr., as an outstanding leader and member of the community. Mr. O'Malley was recently honored with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. He traveled to Washington, DC, for an awards ceremony, and visited with members of the Administration. Mr. O'Malley is a science teacher at Thomas A. Edison Elementary School in Skokie. He thanked the Board

General Meeting ­ October 19, 2016 

The October 19th general meeting, held at ParkCampus, was called to order at 6:45PM. There werefive board members in attendance.

President Obama honors outstanding mathematicsand science teachers

Board/Superintendent Reports: 

Board Member David Northern mentionedthat the Lake County Housing Authority ishosting a Family Literacy Night on November1st at 5:00PM. [Lake County HousingAuthority]

Board Member Tom Meskel mentioned thathe and Board Member Kathleen Parkinson,who are members of the Curriculum and TechCommittee, wanted to know what happensduring Institute Days. They were briefedabout the last institute day consisting ofprofessional development, job alike meetings,reading teams, curriculum development, andall were covered very extensively. They arevery pleased with what they are seeing atD46. He also mentioned how he is the liaisonbetween the Board and the Foundation46 andexplains that he makes reports on what goeson at each groups meetings ­ he mentionedthat Foundation46 is financing the Fine Artsteam field trip to the Art Institute on October21 for staff development. [View photos]

Board Vice President Jim Weidmanmentioned a few corrections to commentsmade at the last Board of Education meetingduring public comment. All current boardmember email addresses are located on theCCSD 46 website [www.d46.org/boe.asp].They are correct, and unfortunately thespeaker at the previous meeting was notusing the correct email addresses to contactthe board members. He also stated that theBoard does not have a retainer for attorneyfees as stated in public comments. All of lastyear's attorney fees were $38,000, not theamount stated in public comment.

Superintendent Correll mentioned that goalsetting meeting dates were sent out.November 1st is the date set for interviewingpotential board members to replace Mr. RobRoop. Discussion was held and November 1stwill be scheduled for the interviews and thegoal setting meeting.

Action Items: 

Motion to approve a Bilingual Assistant at AvonSchool per school code due to student numbers (Dr. Stephanie Diaz, Director of EL, explainedthat this classroom is over the 90% rule, whichstates that EL teachers can only have 90% of thestudents of a non­EL classroom, therefore anassistant is needed)

Motion to approve the purchase of the SoundSystem at GMS (Mr. Marcus Smith, Principal at GMS, discussedthe quotes in the board packet and gave the boardan updated quote which is lower than what is in thepacket. He discussed who has been involved in thedecision making, and the PTO's plans to continue toraise money. Additional discussion was heldregarding district purchasing/budgeting, but thedecision was made to let GMS make the purchase)

Motion to approve David Northern as thereplacement for Rob Roop as a member of theSEDOL Board

Motion to approve the resignation of Rob Roop,Board Member(Mr. Roop commented that he and his family aremoving to Munich, Germany. He is satisfied with histime and accomplishments on the board. Hereminded everyone of just how far the district hascome and that this board has restored the meetingsto their function of being boring and un­newsworthy. The other board members and theSuperintendent then shared their thanks with Mr.Roop.)

Unfinished Business:

Update on the ELL PDT RecommendationsMr. Paul Louis, Assistant Superintendent,introduced Dr. Stephanie Diaz, Director of EL,who discussed the goals and achievements ofwhat took place with the team last year andwhat will happen moving forward. Both Mr.Louis and Dr. Diaz are new to the district thisyear. They are focusing on honoring the workfrom last year while continuing to moveforward.

New Business:

Discussion and outline of the steps for thereplacement of the open seat on the D46BoardThe Superintendent will notify the RegionalOffice of Education that there is an opening onthe Board. The Board will need to appointsomeone to fill the open seat. TheSuperintendent read the requirements for theposition and mentioned that the opening hasbeen posted online already. The district hashad one person apply so far. Interview datehas been set for November 1st. Theappointment would then be announced at aboard meeting. There are suggested interviewquestions, but board members can add to thelist. There was a discussion on the timeline ofthe process, and it was mentioned thatprospective board applicants can email theirresume/cover letter to the district.
