History of Electricity Generation and Distribution in Bangladesh
Nawab of Dhaka installed a small generation in Ahsan Monjil at 5pm on 7th of December in 1901.
In 1930 M/S. DEVCO, a subsidiary of M/S. Octavians Steel Company, developed electricity distribution system at 400V level under complete private ownership .
In 1933 a power generation station named Dhanmondi Power House was established with two 1500 KW generators.
The history of creation of Bangladesh Power Development Board(BPDB)
History of Electricity Generation and Distribution in Bangladesh After partition in 1947 only 17 districts were limited to the
township areas only for a limited time(i.e. For use during night time only) except Dhaka.
In aggregate, the generation capacity of this region was about 21 MW at that time.
In 1959 East Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority(EPWAPDA) was established to look after generation, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity thought the East Pakistan.
After the independence of Bangladesh in 1972 Bangladesh Power Development Board(BPDB) was created to look after the same function.
The Dhaka Electric Supply Authority (DESA) was promulgated by the President in 1990.

Natural Gas66% of the total power transmission in Bangladesh is
covered by Natural Gas.As of 2011, 79 natural gas wells are present in the 23
operational gas fields which produce over 2000 millions of cubic feet of gas per day (MMCFD).
Till now 23 gas fieds are located of whicth two of the gas fiels are located in offshore area.
Currently gas is being produced from 18 gas fields (79 gas wells).

Coal and Mining Coal reserves of 3.3 billion tons. Till now discovered 2800MMTPA capacity extractable high quality bituminous coal in 5
coalmines in about 100 SqKm in the north-western part of Bangladesh The name of these deposits are-Barapukuria, Phulbari and Dighipara coal field in Dinajpur
district, Khalashpir in Rangpur district and Jamalganj in Joypurhat district.

Other energy resources
Bangladesh has 15 MW solar energy capacity through rural households and 1.9 MW wind power in kutubdia and Feni.
Among renewable source there are: i. Petroleum Productii. Biogasiii. Solariv. Bio-diesel

Demand of Power40 % of the population are deprived of Electricity.Approximately 1,600 MW of Power generation is
lacking regularly.Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) is demanded around 0.1
million tons. The nation furthermore demands 3.5 million tons of
oil imports in additional to almost 2 million diesel oil based power plants build around the country.
The additional petroleum & coal imports are causing a disruption in the GDP by as much as 2% annually.

Future Plans The Ministry of Power and Energy has been mobilizing Tk. 40,000 crore ($5.88
billion) to generate 5,000 MW of electricity to reduce load shedding into a tolerable level within next four and half years .
The PDB would hire furnace-oil based 1,000MW of electricity from private sector.
The government would install furnace-oil based 800 MW capacity of power plant.
The government is trying is level best to improve the coal and mining sector to use it more to reduce the wanting level. The Future of Power Sector in brief
