PortfolioPThis document shows a selection of work I have
done over the last years at the faculty of Architecture, Urbanism and Buidling Sciences at the Technical
University of Delft. In my work you will find a diversity of residential and public buildings with a
blend of sustainable and conservative characteristics.
-
As a son of a contractor, the interest for the build environment began at a young age. What started as a part-time job in the construction company of his father, resulted in a student career in building engineering. After finishing his high school, Tom started at the Avans Hogeschool s-Hertogenbosch. In the summer of 2009, he graduated as a Bachelor of Engineering with Architecture as specialisation. During the five years as a student of Building Engineering his interests in Architecture grew tremendously. At the end of the summer, he applied for the pre-master program at the
Technical University of Delft. Begin 2010, he started as a Master student at the same universit y. The master program includes two design studios and a graduation studio. The first studio consisted of a hybrid residential building combined with storage in the port of Hamburg. The second studio Theatres of Democracy was a design assignment to transform the Dutch House of Representatives. After successfully completing the masters program, Tom started his graduation project in the Dwelling studio At home in the city. During the research
Learning from transformation, a study into industrial heritage, Tom decided to exchange the Dwelling studio for the RMIT studio (Renovation, Modification, Intervention and Transformation). After 18 months, Tom graduated with a unique sustainable project Food for Thought, transformation of the Daniel Goedkoopschool. In January 2014, Tom Rijvers graduated as an Architect at the Delft University of Technology.

This project consists the transformation of the Daniel Goedkoopschool in Amsterdam West. The post-war school is designed according to the principle of het nieuwe bouwen: light, air and space. These characteristics can be found in the new design. The former school will be transformate into
a sustainable building where the awareness of healthy living will be essential. The sustainable DCBA-method provides the design of a comprehensive approach to sustainability and also provides a social approach in the field of awareness. In that sense the school will be of great value for the future.

The Architecture of DemocracyD
-
DIn this design, the Dutch House of Representatives is designed as a discussion arena. Centralized in this plan is a star-shaped spot for debate. This star-shaped configuration is a result from extensive research into a suitable form for the Dutch parliamentary debate. The MPs, presidency and cabinet are configured in a
hexagon shape around the place of debate, so that each party stands/sits behind its representative in the debate. The basic principle is that both MPs and spectators are placed as close as possible to the debate.

LThe living+ project is based on a residential block of 40m x 40m and consists living in combination with an additional function. By combining Living + storage in an innovative way it creates a typology that has a flexible configuration. Not only old stuff can be stored but also certain rooms can be send away. The lift system has a central
place in the building and serves as a driving force for the building. Storing and transporting the boxes fits perfectly into the environment in the Hafencity area in the port of Hamburg.

JThe library consists of 8 floors of 25m x 25m. In the centre of the building an elevator is located surrounded by a staircase. The floors are mutually connected with broad steps, which are positioned along the facade. The route along these stairs is the primary traffic route. On this route there is a continuous wall of bookcases that
separates the primary route of the back-lying areas. Openings in the wall give access to these areas. Each floor has its own theme and its own theme colour. The experience of the main route and the perception of the library, play an important role in the design.

ZThis project consists of three buildings specifically designed for people with physical and/or mental disabilities. Two 2-layer buildings and a one-layer construction will be realized for a total of 60 Multiple Complex Disabled (MCD). The project is located in a natural environment so that people who are tied to their building will experience
the incentives given by nature. The perception of the people is more important than the durability of the design. Sustainable solutions are desirable, if they have no negative impact on the perception of the residents.

de Scholendriehoek, Amsterdam, Cultural Historical research The research de Scholendriehoek consists of three different scale levels: the urban context of Amsterdam West, research on the direct context (de Scholendriehoek) and the research of the building. In all three studies the emphasis is on a cultural and historical level. Why are things the way they are now and how did they occur? In particular, the notions of post-war urban planning are clearly reflected in this research.

1904On the end of the 19e century the harbours of Amsterdam were to small for a the trade they did. That was the reason to for new harbour islands in the IJ. In 1889 the Central station were opened and give the possibilities for transport over the railway. On this map you see as well the growth of the cities around Amsterdam, they were up coming because the recovering economy.
1921The Annexation with neighbour municipalities
the property law who prescribe the qualities
were founded. Even the build of housing in the north part of Amsterdam started, here was the idea to combine living and working with each other. Slowly the industry were developed in the north part.
1941Through the growth of the city they founded a chair by the municipal who gives advice for the new expansion of the city. Oneof the new plans were the AUP (algemeen uitbreidingsplan) This plan gave a global structure idea for the new neighbourhoods. Because the War these plans were later executed. An important development in this time, was the growth of the airport Schiphol. This gave Amsterdam more opportunities for trade with other countries.
1966 - currentAfter World War 2 Amsterdam had a huge growth of inhabitants. At this time there was the baby boom and with that, there came housing shortage. Too many families
the government there were social housing programs on a large scale. In 1959 there were living 872.000 people in Amsterdam. From the sixties families where leaving Amsterdam. This had several causes:- The possibility to build in the region - Improvements to travel by car- Leaving the city for a family dwelling - Tweede Nota Ruimtelijke Ordening (deconcentration)Places like Alkmaar, Purmerend, Hoorn, Lelystad and later Almere grow very fast in these times. A lot of native Amsterdammers are living here. From the 1980s the regeneration of the city started and since 1984 the population of the city is growing. Nowadays Amsterdam is a growing with 12 000 people per year. The expectation is that there are 850 000 people live in Amsterdam in 2040.

It is connected in the south to the area around the existing Mercatorplein and on the east side of the already built Landlust-plan. The plan offers space for 9,800 dwellings which corresponds to more than 35,000 inhabitants. The total area of the district is 97.4 hectares of which 40 ha for construction, 36.5 hectares for roads, 15.5 hectares of gardens and green and the other hectares divided among canals, playgrounds and market areas.2

In April 1950, the municipality of Amsterdam came up with a guideline for the post-war school. In Het nieuwe schoolgebouw voor kind en gemeenschap (the new school for child and community) (image 48) there are various points
and urban planning perspective to take inot account by designing new schools.
The research-committe investigate the following points:a. The requirements of structure and equipment of schools according to the new ideas about teaching and education.b. The hygienic requirements.c. The part which the school ought to play in the social life of the community and the possibilities of the building, lending itself to such a purpose.d. The architectural and technical requirements and those of townplanning.5 The results are worked out in the Algemene Beschouwingen. The following point are part of the result and are applied on the Daniel Goedkoopschool.
Corridor freeOne of the main characteristics of the H-school is the absence of the corridor. The H-school is also known as de corridor-free-school. The classrooms in the Daniel Goedkoopschool are also designed at this model. Through two staircases the adjacent classrooms are accessible.
Air&lightThe absence of the corridors ensures that the classrooms have on both sides large glass fronts. In this way, the sunlight can enter the classroom on both sides. By opening the windows, the air can go through the classroom. The principle of the H-school is based on the Openluchtscholen.
Separation of functionsAt building level, the separation of functions is desirable. This separation is clearly visible. In the south-wing the theoretical classrooms are placed (dark gray). The low rise in the west consists of practical classrooms (red) and the north wing consisted of a gymnasium and a theatre.
Detached positionIn line with the open air school is the isolated location of the school is essential. To achieve good ventilation and light penetration the detached location is important. The Daniel Goedkoopschool is located in a park-like setting and is hardly hindered by the surrounding buildings.

In early 2008 presented councilor Tjeerd Herrema, in line with the example of the Top 100 National Monuments of Minister Plasterk, the Amsterdams Top 100 of the postwar
bridges, but also houses and housing complexes. This Top 100 consists of the absolute top of the postwar Amsterdam architecture and urbanism, and complements the eight postwar national monuments in the city. In recent years, much of the architecture of this period have been lost or irreparably destroyed, mostly from ignorance. The Top 100 is intended to change that.
In an article in the school magazine writes art historian Wilma Kempinga:An entire generation of school buildings is in danger of disappearing. There is no overview because every municipality decides thereselfs. Why demolish a Lieu de mmoire, a building that plays a role in the collective memory of many Dutch and is characteristic of a particular period and certain ideas, if not necessary?
Image ?? shows the Ordekaart van Amsterdam West. In this map are besides the buildings in the Scholendriehoek also other schools in Amsterdam West designated as special buildings. These buildings are all six conducted by the Department of Public Works Amsterdam and were build in the same period.

POSITION
SOCIAL POSITIONEarly 2011, I attended a lecture by Joost Beunderman on the Spontaneous City (part of Urhahn Urban Design).
economy. Since then the book has never left me.The book is about 25 trailblazers how the current time (crisis) can be handled with the limited space and resources. In addition, various examples are discussed in which social initiatives, common engagement, active citizenship and
organizations can achieve a lot if the right people in the right place come together, recognize opportunities and then
This type of approach is an interesting way to ante the problems and opportunities in the project location to apply. Bos en Lommer is one of the forty Vogelaar districts and is facing many social problems (and therefore opportunities).
In my graduation project I want to provide space for the people of Bos en Lommer to get in touch with each other and to create spaces where people can work on a common goal.
ARCHITECTURAL POSITIONIn the architecture of the reallocating, I think it is important that the cultural / historical values of the building are preserved. Not so much the function should be maintained (otherwise the vacancy is not been necessary) but the general thoughts that the building (or parts of the building) in the past had. If there will be an adjustment to the building, I
existing and new. Because of this distinction, there is a clear difference between what was and what will be added.

AREA

The development of the city ensures that the simultaneously the rural area begins to decrease. The pictures left illustrate how this development has taken place. A distinction is made between the layers: roads, rail-roads, water and greenery. The bottom images show an overall picture of the different layers.
In 1850 you see structure of peat mining areas with narrow pieces of land and small canals. This was typical for the landscape in our area at that time. The green structure was part of the municipal of Sloten, they called it Slatuinen. At that time there was only one railway, from the Willemspoort to Haarlem. The railway connection between the city centre and the outskirts and the development of roads ensured the possibilities to live near the city centre. By the expanding of the city, the typical water structure of the peat mining areas was reduced by that time. Nowadays, only the main water structures are still present, e.g.the Haarlemmervaart and the Kostverlorenvaart. Gradually the city expanded and there was more need for road structures and railways to connect all the parts of the city. This structure is formed by functionally use.
the northern part of our research area. There was a new dike needed to reclaim more land. By the urban planned expansion there was also more need for green formed areas like a park, that are the current green layers.1
Despite the growth of the city (and the shrinkage of the rural area), it is remarkable that the major green spaces and waterways are preserved. These boundaries in the landscape are in the current urban structure still visible. The railway, the Haarlemmertrekvaart and the Haarlemmerweg have protected the area of de Brettenzone against the growing city.

Learning from Transformation A study into industrial heritage
What elements are responsible for a successful transformation of industrial heritage? What lessons can be learned from this type of transformation and how can they apply for new architectural challenges? This research will be a quest into the transformation of the industrial heritage. Therefor we divided the transformation process into four different elements: 1. Construction and interventions, 2. New program, 3. Relation between different programs, 4. Preserved character after transformation.

The architecture of Democracy, Reichstag Berlin In this studio the architecture of parliaments will be studied. The research focuses on two scales. One part of the studio will look at the programmatic organization of the parliament, the architectural staging of the democratic process and at the parliament as public space. Secondly the studio focuses on the materiality and spatial characteristics of the parliament as a specific example of a public interior. Based on this study architectural proposals will be developed for assembly hall of the Second chamber of the Dutch parliament.

FThe apartment building consists of nine apartments, which differ in variations and sizes (85 to 110 m2). Each dwelling has access to an entrance hall, toilet, two bedrooms, a spacious living room and an open kitchen. Several apartments have a bright indoor terrace. On the ground floor there is the entrance that gives access to the courtyard.
The korte St. Josephstraat, is also included in the construction plans. The characteristic faade will be preserved. Here are two commercial spaces of 30 m2 on the ground floor and two apartments of 85 m2 and 92 m2 on the first floor. The apartments have a spacious outdoor balcony, with a beautiful view on the courtyard.

HThe characteristics of the new multifunctional nursing home The Volckaert are: preventing temporary housing in terms of cost and quality of life, the pursuit of a building with a human scale and making the most of the qualities of the site. These assumptions have led to a design according to the campus model: several buildings of smaller
size in a park-like setting.
During my traineeship I worked as a subcontractor in the first 50 days and as a planning engineer for the last 50 days. In this 100 day time frame the total structural work was completed.
