Hello I’m TomI am a second year Industrial Design student at Loughborough University, currently looking for a 12 month industry placement.
Thank you for taking the time to look at my portfolio. I hope you find it interesting.
Power Boat Build
01.Shallow V-hull racing
power boat self build
During a recent summer holiday I discovered a set of plans online to build a Dillon Mini Vee single seater power boat.
With basic drawings and tools, no previous experience and totally unassisted, I completed this ambitious project in just under 8 weeks.
By the end of the holiday the boat was ready to launch.
After dedicating so much time and effort to the build, flying up the River Exe, behind the wheel of my very own boat, was one of the most gratifying things I have ever experienced.

INITIAL RESEARCH
BULKY PACKAGING
Irregular shaped packaging results in large wasteful gaps between bottles. As a result packaging is bulky leading to lower shipping efficiency.
HIGH WATER CONTENT
Detergent bottles are filled with aprox 95% water and 5% active ingredients. As a result packaging is bulky and heavy.
FEMALEMARKET
87% of people who buy and use detergent spray bottles on a regular basis are female. 17% of men clean the home on a daily basis.
Almost 500,000 Litres of cleaning product are wasted each year due to the hard to reach residual volume left in the bottle
RESIDUAL WASTE
SHORT LIFE CYCLE
As spray bottles are currently disposable products, the life cycle is short. 300,000,000 end up in land fill every year.
Detergent bottles spend less than 0.01% of their life in use. They normally live in overcrowded cupboards often surrounded by many other spray bottles.
TIME IN USE
INNOVATION EXPLAINED
By designing bottles to sit perfectly flush with one another, the useable shipping space is increased by 83%.In a standard 40ft shipping container 9,240 more bottles could be shipped.
TESSELLATED BODY
Dartfrog heads can support a range different types of detergents that could be swapped during cleaning. This would eliminate the need for multiple spray bottles.
INTERCHANGEABLE HEADS
Replaceable heads and a refillable water compartment will vastly reduce the required cupboard storage space.
IMPROVED STORAGE
SENARIO OF USE
Unclip the base and expand the polymer bladder.
The product can be used just like a regular spray bottle.
Bleach Polish Window
1. Fill the bladder with water.
2 . Connect the desired detergent head
3 .
4 . Interchangeable heads allow the user to use different types of cleaning agent.
5 . Remove water and collapse the bladder into the base to shrink for easy storage.

Night Club Comparison App
03.ON BEAT is a night life orientated app that aims to streamline the process of selecting, organising
and entering a venue.
USER RESEARCH
1. TOO MUCH CHOICE
“I feel spoilt for choice with pros and cons for each club. I want to visit new places but don’t want to spend ages researching them, or take the risk of visiting an unknown place.”
2. LONG QUEUES
“Standing in the cold for long periods of time can ruin a night out. I Don’t take a coat out with me to avoid paying for the cloak room. Arriving too early can leave me standing in a place with no atmosphere.”
LUKE QUINN “The venue has the ability to make or break a night out. Thats why I spend so much
time researching new places.”

3. INCORRECTCASH
“Arriving at the club without enough cash to get in and having to borrow off friends is embarrassing. I often feel really uncomfortable walking around with large amounts of cash on me”
Persona
INTERESTS
Luke is twenty two and in his final year of university reading Human Geography. Working hard towards achieving a 1st, Luke has to carefully pick and choose where when he goes out.
EXPERIENCE DEVELOPMENT
REFININGWorking with user incites towards a mature and intuitive solution allowed me to remove a number of unnecessary and distracting aspects. This left me with an app offering only the core and most useful features that end users actually wanted.
LISTENINGHonest in-depth interactions with the end users enabled me to understand the how, why and what if? Having determined the key elements I could then set about creating concepts for my app that would provide real value.
EXPLORINGI believe it’s important to Initially ignoring criticism and constraints in order to challenge assumptions and push boundaries. This allowed me to generate a wider variety of concepts on the way to creating a suitable solution to the problems I learned about through my research.

POP TESTING
AXURE PROTOTYPERP
Once the final screen design had been completed the rapid prototyping and wire framing software, Axure, was used. This gave a life like feel to users testing the app functionality and intuitiveness.
Pop was used to in the early stages of development to link wire frames together. Pictures taken of individual screen drawings were linked together to provide a more realistic testing experience.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT ME
During the 4 months Tom spent with Reveal, he worked as part of the London based production team, investigating the user experience, camera harness designs and product testing. He is a highly competent, imaginative, out going individual as well as an excellent communicator. Tom presented his designs and user experience map in an engaging and intuitive manner that allowed clients and members of staff to be updated quickly. Despite being the youngest member of the team, Tom was always quick to put forward his ideas and was responsive to critique given to him. As his time with us came to and end, it became clear that Tom had taken full advantage of this feedback and showed great improvement since he first started. Tom was an asset to the company, so much so that I offered him the opportunity to join our team again for further work experience if he wanted.I am confident he will continue to develop into a valuable designer in the future.
Alisdare Field, CEO Reveal Media
I have known Tom for four years and have spent time supporting him as a visiting lecturer at A-level and have spent time with him while he undertook a week’s work experience. Tom’s main skill is his ‘can do’, positive attitude. He is someone who has and continues to develop his skills as a designer. His ability to present and relate to people I believe will take him a long way. Tom is someone who can take responsibly and deliver and someone who I would not think twice about employing.
