“With the increasing concern on our nation’s economy and recovering housingmarket we approached this year’s list with a different lens than in previousyears. We concentrated on the outlook for future growth & ability to reboundin the communities that we selected” said Steve Nickerson, president andCEO. “We looked at the local government and the business leadership in eachcommunity as we considered this year’s winners. We selected communitieswith visionary leaders, improving or thriving economies including housing &realization of “green” initiatives.

The TOP100 cities were selected based on interviews with local leaders, feedback from residents and economic, environmental, education, crime, employment and housing data for the past year. The Chamber and othercommunity leaders were asked to complete a detailed questionnaire. To seethe entire list of cities, go to www.relocateamerica.com.

With the increased criteria used for this year, we are pleased to again berecognized as one of the outstanding communities to live in the United States.

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRSCOMMITTEE RECEIVES BRIEFING

FROM MICHIGAN CHAMBERJim Holcomb, Vice President of Business Advocacy, from the MichiganChamber of Commerce provided an overview to the Government AffairsCommittee on their top priorities in Lansing. The Michigan Chamber isprimarily focused on the State’s budget deficit. Their top three prioritiesin regards to the budget include:

• Unrolling the budget to see the details about how the line items are allocated

• Cutting the cost of corrections while maintaining public safety

• Finding leadership to prioritize and make necessary spending cuts

The Michigan Chamber also opposes taking federal stimulus dollars forunemployment benefits. The stipulations to take the money wouldpermanently increase the costs of the program in the future andconsequently raise employers Unemployment Insurance costs.

In addition, they also do not support creating a graduated personalincome tax, since our flat rate of 4.35% is one of the lowest in thenation. For transportation funding, they support moving to a wholesaletax on gas in place of the current tax on consumer consumption. Theyfeel this type of tax is more sustainable by providing a consistentfunding source. The Michigan Chamber does support increasing fundingfor transportation because of the impact on business and the poor qualityof our infrastructure.

The opinions of the Michigan Chamber of Commerce do not reflect anypolicies of the Plymouth Community Chamber of Commerce, but doprovide an interesting perspective for businesses to consider. For moreinformation you can go to their web site www.michamber.com.

GRAND OPENINGS

Jeff Beitz of JB Pioneering, an active Chambervolunteer, was killed in a traffic accident inMarch. He served on the AmbassadorsCommittee and attended most of our events.Jeff was widely known by new members sincehe had been actively recruiting membership forthe Chamber the last few months. Often, whenno one else was available, Jeff would attend theribbon cuttings to support new businesses asthey opened. Jeff was one of the mostdedicated volunteers we worked with at the

Chamber and always demonstrated the true meaning of giving selflesslyto support the community. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jeff’sfamily as they deal with this tragic event.
