Words to GROW by!THE ROOT ROTS OF GREEN BEANS

AND LIMA BEANS

Root rots, damping-off and seed rots are major problems in the production of green beans and lima beans in Louisiana. These problems tend to be spotty and their occurrence unpredictable. The problem is complicated because at least three soil-inhabiting fungi common to Louisiana soils can cause these diseases.Rhizoctonia root rot is caused by a soil-borne fungus which may attack many kinds of plants. It

is a very important cause of bean root rot in Louisiana. Rhizoctonia usually is more prevalent in well-drained soils and soils having plenty of organic matter.

On young bean plants, the disease is called damping-off. The fungus may attack the roots and stem below and above the soil surface. Young succulent plants usually die soon after infection. On older plants when the stem become woodier, reddish-brown

cankers extend longitudinally along the stem near the soil surface. The plant at this stage may show few signs of disease, although yields may be considerably reduced.Pythium root rot, sometimes called damping-of, stem rot or hollow stem, may be caused by several species of Pythium. It is sometimes confused with Rhizoctonia or with other root rots. It is likely to occur during wet weather, hot or cold, and usually is more common in heavier or compacted soils. In very young plants, Pythium sp. causes a wet rot and soon kills the plants. Often a cottony growth can be seen on infected crowns. Larger plants often wilt and die as if scalded.Fusarium root rot, also known as dry root rot, is common and occurs later in the season during hotter, drier weather. It is more likely to occur on acid soils that are low in fertility. The first symptom of Fusarium infestation is a slightly reddish discoloration on the taproot as early as one week after the plant emerges from the soil. The discoloration gradually increases in intensity, killing the taproot, or it may occur in streaks that may extend to the soil line. The red may change to a dark brown frequently accompanied by longitudinal cracks. The small lateral roots are usually killed, and clusters of roots develop above the lesion and just below the soil line.Above-ground symptoms include stunting. Wilting of one or two leaves may occur. In dry weather, leaves turn yellow and may drop. Seed pods are few and imperfectly filled with undersized seed.Fortunately, some practices will reduce the probability and frequency of these diseases and reduce the destructive intensity if one strikes.

Helpful cultural practices include: (1) seeding only in soils that have been well prepared, with pH around 6.5,

(2) seeding only during favorable weather to a depth of one inch or less and on top of a bed to avoid drowning;

(3) seeding in warm soils,

(4) using high-quality seed treated with a protectant fungicide;

(5) using Terraclor as an in-furrow soil treatment at seeding, and

(6) avoiding problem fields and those with excess crop residue.

DANNY BLACKBURN HAS ALWAYS HADHIS FOOT ON THE ACCELERATOR!

By Tony OnellionDanny Blackburn was born to be a car salesman, but one you could trust. Born and raised near the car capital of America, this effervescent soul hasnever found a subject or a person he doesn’t like. After 28 years in the tire-kicking game, his last gig coming with Brian Harris along Slidell’s I-10 car corridor, Danny was looking for something todo. His wife, Nancy, was still working for the local bureau of a New Orleans newspaper and she was occupied on Saturdays. Danny saw an ad for the new Camellia City Market needing volunteers, so Danny went down to Griffith Park in Old Town and offered his services on Saturdays. When the board members gave Danny a choice of shifts, Danny said he’d take them all…why not, if you’re going to figure out what the heck it was all about?

Since Danny was one of those rare creatures...a male volunteer who actually worked and wanted more, not less…the board offered him a positionon the board. At his first meeting, the lady doing what Danny does now…Camellia City Market Director…resigned. This cushy $50 a month position fell right into Danny Blackburn’s lap. At first Danny took on the usual duties - publicity, coordinating the market participants, etc. But then he saw a need to involve arts and crafts and just before Thanksgiving 2008, he invited several crafters to become participants. While Danny was selling cars and later, training salesmen as a sales manager and general manager,he still found time to do a fair amount of reading in subjects outside of the automotive field. A lifelong vegetarian, Danny spent most of his reading time poring over articles and books on health issues and food-related subjects. Suffering from diverticulitus, Danny had eschewed much of his vegetarian upbringing in the car business, having made the move from Michigan to Arkansas and finally Louisiana. Convincing himself he needed to walk away from the beer and greasy foods of his professional life, Danny recommitted to healthy and heart smart choices. He took a stab at working with a water ionization program several years ago and still believes in using ionized water, keeping a machine at his home. It was this atmosphere in which Danny Blackburn found his second calling. Danny used his management skills to build a strong base of regular Camellia Market vendors. He realized that the market was quite a commitment for these vendors who spent much of the prior week preparing and cooking their wares. Many of them also sell at one other local market. Danny understood that the market was as much of a social event as it was a place to buy fresh produce and homemade goodies. During the seven years Danny has run the market, Camellia has prospered because of management decisions. For one, duplication of products is tightly controlled, depending on the crowd size. For another, Danny is always there, the first to arrive and the last to leave, encouraging vendors and customers alike, promoting everyone and everything and answering questions. Although attendance is not as large as Danny would like to see, it is a loyal group and nearly everyone seems pleased with their day in Griffith Park. Soon the market will move to the parking lot of the Chamber of Commerce building on Front Street. Parking will be available and the improved visibility hopefully will make up for leaving the tranquil setting of Slidell’s oldest park. Danny is also an advocate of all farmer’s markets, including the successful one in Covington and the growing organization in Abita Springs. A recent graduate of auctioneer school, it would be Danny’s call to say something like “Hey,waddayasay, waddayasay, eathealthy, plantnatural,doIhearcayennepepperandepsomsaltsfertilizers, plantagarden, waddayasay….SOLD!” Danny’s certainly sold on the healthy aspects of food, creating partnerships with master gardeners, the Abita Growth Initiative, the Northshore High School FFA and many others. Danny’s goal is to get healthier foods to schools, churches and other organizations. He says the grocery stores are changing but not enough. Folks on the Northshore will see a Whole Foods store open in Covington later this year which could be a game-changer for many consumers. Food price increases are inevitable, especially with the move towards sustainability and less chemical preservation of foodstuffs. But with better quality comes the ability to eat less because of the quenchability of the product’s effect on the appetite, not to mention the health benefits. Families are sacrificing in some areas to pay for healthier groceries which in America have been relatively cheap compared to the rest of the world. Now those groceries are being reviewed for their content like never before. Danny sees this movement as a positive which will improve selection in the grocery store. It is his belief that many of the sick children and adults, including this area’s high incidence of obesity, would improve dramatically with more natural selections and healthier food products. Danny feels that America’s trust that all the food they buy is healthy food has been shaken during the past five years. It will take a joint effort by sellers and consumers to regain that trust through more varied selections, discipline, understanding and education. Meanwhile, the Camellia City Market continues its weekly offerings of homemade, health and socializing on Saturday mornings in Slidell.

PLAQUEMINES FISHING REPORTS

Capt. Hoop -- Continued on page 7

I fish with Add several times a year. With us was his daughter, nephew, and brother in law. This was to be a 2 day adventure on his boat. Bait was hard to find so we just continued on. I had plenty of dead bait and there was a weed line about 12 miles out in the direction we were going. Everything was beautiful this morning. We passed a nice shrimp boat and I had to take a picture. It was named after my daughter Tammy. A little over 10 miles out we find a good weed line. As we slow down to check out or even troll the line a motor dies. Could not find the problem. Signs pointing to a fuel problem. Single tank is no help and HPDI is NOT the engine that can suck up a little bit of bad fuel. We are so close to our first destination we were discussing the thought of just making the rig in front of us then heading in. I look up in the sky and turn my fingers in a gesture to turn around. Part way in with one motor I play with the other motor and get it going. Something is still very wrong because the fuel burn is no where like it should be. We decide to stop in state waters and nail a few snapper on the way in. We will keep both engines running though.

Capt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good!

Before we could get to our destination rig both our motors cut out. We now have 2 engines down and drifting outside SW pass. Can not get either one going now. The river current is pushing us out and he does not have enough anchor rode to do us any good. At this time I am glad we did not go the extra mile to the first rig. Storms are popping up all around but we were being spared. Although I did not see him I knew the Cougar was fishing somewhere in the area. I call him and he unties from the rig he is on and comes out to get us. He pulls us into a nearby rig. He ties up and catches a limit of red snapper. We remain tied up behind him while this is going on. There were a few nice snapper way out behind our tandem setup.

I called the Coast Guard and had them call Sea Tow. Good thing Add has Sea Tow insurance. I also had them let Rob Buck know I was on the boat Did not know if that would help or not but I have worked with him before on some jobs. Once Captain John had his limit of red snapper on the Cougar he passed his tie up line to us and went to look for some redfish. Now all we could do was wait for Sea Tow to arrive. We ended up getting our limit on a double rig. We needed 2 more and did it in fashion.

I contacted the Coast Guard again and had them get an ETA on Sea Tow. They contacted us back and said 50 minutes. That estimated time was spot on. Now that we had nothing else to do but wait we had lunch. I then proceeded to salt water scrub the boat. I can not just sit around and wait. I have to do something. All The others were relaxing except for Add. He was a nervous wreak worrying about what lay ahead of him with his boating issue. Once Sea Tow arrived Rob unhooked us from the rig and then I took his line for the tow in. I was able to get the port engine started again. The stbd. engine was toast. This enabled us to get on plain. The engine did not last long but just enough so that those twin Tohatsu 250 power horses could take over and haul us all the way in at 24 kts. The total ride in was about 28 miles or so.

Fished for 8 days straight so I will try to catch up today.Last weekend was not an offshore weekend but I had customers that were told but they still wanted to try. I offered them inshore but they insisted on trying. No chance for any tuna or mahi just close rig stuff if we could even do that safely. Saturday I had a family of 4, Father, 2 sons, and Grandpa. We loaded up my Glacier Bay catamaran and eased down the river. As soon as we hit the pass I knew the only thing I could do would be close by. Before I got to the closest rig the youngest son was already sea sick but they still wanted to try. The seas in this area were doable but not comfortable. I tied up to the rig on the calm side and on the first drop we hooked up to a nice snapper. No pictures on the boat because of the seas. Dad reeled up the first fish and he also caught the sea sick bug. Second fish the oldest son reeled up and we fed the sharks.

Plaquemines Fishing with Capt. HoopOur Freedom Charters

We got a few past the sharks but we were losing a lot of setups to the sharks. Our time at the rig was short. Once we got 3 whole fish on board they pulled the plug on the trip.

It was now a family affair with 3 generations throwing up at one time. Even Grandpa got into the act. Once we hit the protected waters of the river and they started feeling a little better I heard the youngest son tell his dad “Dad I really really love you more than anything but I will never ever do this again. The poor kid got a very bad experience for his first trip out.

We were back in way before noon with 3 nice snappers and 3 people glad to see land.

As I was leaving the marina my friend Marty shows up with his new Calcutta.

I was going with him the next day. Our intention was to rig fish close and put in tracks on his electronics of some of the tight places at some of the passes. Sunday we headed out and it was almost a repeat of the day before. His buddies got some snapper but the trip was cut short for the same reason. (Excessive chum) We managed some snapper but his friends thought it would be better to sit at the house boat and relax so we headed in. After we dropped them off he and I went back out and filled the electronics with what we needed. He had all this on his old boat but could not for some reason transfer the information. At our last place we marked a course around a sandbar in east bay.

His old tracks would not have been much good because this bar has built up since he first marked them. With the winds coming in from the south we were going through breakers in 4 to 6 feet of water. The cat took a pair of breakers over the bow but there was no real danger. It was defiantly not a place we wanted to stay in. Once we tracked around to the outside point I turned the boat and headed in. I will say I am very impressed with the Calcutta boats. This was my first of 4 days on 1 of 2 Calcutta boats that were down here. –0– Our Freedom Charters

I attempted to get the almost good motor going to get the boat on the trailer but it was not happening. Add’s daughter was not feeling well all weekend so she went right back to the condo they were staying in as soon as we landed. At the end of the day things looked normal with a fish hanging and cleaning party.

Although our day did not go as planned everything went smooth. I would like to recognize all that assisted us throughout the day. Our first good fortuned came when we turned around thanks to building storms. The Coast Guard did their job efficiently. Rob was on another tow up the road but wasted no time getting to us. Thanks again Rob Buck and Sea Tow. Captain John of Delta Blue Sport Fishing for having his people stop fishing and come to get us tied up. Lastly Tohatsu for making those powerful motors that hauled us in so quickly.Over all we made the best of what could have been a very much worse day in many aspects.

Belle Chasse Academy Selected as a Top Workplace for 2015

Belle Chasse Academy is proud to have been selected by our employees as a Top Workplace for 2015. The winners were announced at an awards breakfast at the Sheraton New Orleans on May 15, 2015. The winners were also revealed to the New Orleans area in the Top Workplaces special section, published on Sunday, May 17, 2015.This is the first time NOLA.com/The Times Picayune has joined up with Workplace Dynamics, an independent research firm, to recognize the best places to work in the New Orleans area. Winning employees are chosen through employee surveys on a variety of workplace topics. Survey results are verified and tabulated by an independent organization. When asked about what it means to be named one of New Orleans’ Top Workplaces, Jane Dye, CEO responded, “Belle Chasse Academy employees should be especially proud of this achievement since they are the ones who were compelled to nominate BCA. We stood apart from other comparable companies when measured for company leadership, compensation, training, workplace flexibility and diversity, all things to be very proud of.”

Pictured in attached photo are BCA employees in attendance at the award ceremony:front – Mrs. Jacinta Bazanac (6th grade Math Teaching Assistant), Mrs. Rene Thompson (Principal grades K-4)middle – Mrs. Barbara Smith (Physical Education), Mrs. Sheila Glass (Business Manager), Mrs. Traci Nelson (Human Resources Manager)back – Mrs. Micky Stubbs (Music Teacher), Mrs. Shawn Henry (Facilities Manager), Mrs. Troy Mark (Administrative Services Manager), Mrs. Cheryl Abadie (Cafeteria Manager)

Belle Chasse Academy opened its doors on September 5, 2002 to 600 military/DoD dependent children in the greater New Orleans area. Since the first year the school routinely serves 900+ students each year. While long in the conceptualization phase, the school rapidly became a reality between October 2000 and September 2002 through the joint efforts of the Commander, Marine Forces Reserve; the Commander, Naval Forces Reserve; and the first Board of Directors of Belle Chasse Academy, Inc., backed by the active support of elected officials, businessmen, and community members.A Louisiana Type II charter school, housed in a modern 123,000 square foot facility, the BCA learning community is dedicated to meeting the unique educational needs of the military child in the 21st century. BCA’s Louisiana Department of Education school report card reflects a grade of “A”. BCA is also fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI).Please visit www.bellechasseacademy.org and view the school prospectus to see and feel the Belle Chasse Academy learning community at work and play.

Well, I did it again. Over extended myself and had to count on my granddaughter to let me borrow one of her paintings for this column. I just can’t seem to do all the things I used to do before. At one time I could have 3 or 4 projects going and my job and still have time for other things. I wonder if age is starting to catch up or I am wanting to do more things than I should attempt. Whatever the case maybe I am so blessed to have such a crafty granddaughter! Sketch a simple drawing on a canvas, give her some duct tape or beads and some string, paper and markers, just about anything and she will come up with something. This time, however, she went to a craft class that I was not teaching. And as you can see from the picture it was simple to do.

So let’s start with the project. On a 8x10 canvas draw a simple Minion, everyone loves Minions, and just paint him yellow, You can make yours a girl or boy by changing the color of the outfit or actually drawing a collar or neckline for a girl’s dress. Paint the gloves to match the dress for a girl or plain black for a boy. Paint on the eye and glasses with a great big smile, add some hair, some finishing touches to the clothes your Minion is wearing, outline everything and you’re done!

Easy cheesy! And to dry your paint faster, don’t forget to get out the blow dryer and dry on a cool setting.

She and I took a ride to the new Hobby Lobby when they opened and saw lots of things that we plan on doing. Love having a granddaughter that enjoys the same things that I do. And of course my grandson and I have a lot of things in common also. One being, letting him drive me around. It may not be crafty but, it sure helps when I want to focus on other things.

Well, that’s it for this time. So what is your next craft project going to be? Mine…I don’t know. But, I know it will be fun.

Hello my name is Tommy and I am 6 years old. I have been at PAWS since September 22nd of 2012. I am a lovable and laid back cat. Big dogs do not frighten me. In fact, I barely get frightened about anything. I have a chilled out personality, just enjoying the world. I would love to hang out with you while you watch your favorite movie or read your favorite book. If you are interested I am still at PAWS waiting for my forever home. I am up-to-date on my shots, I am neutered and micro-chipped. Come by and see me.

This stunning tuxedo cat is Twiggy. She is a 5 year old girl who came to PAWS expecting. She delivered 3 beautiful babies. Twiggy was an awesome mama giving her babies all the love and care they needed. She’s an affectionate girl looking for her forever home. She would love to cuddle with you then play a game of chase with a toy mouse. She is up-to-date o her shots, spayed and micro-chipped. Can you give Twiggy a forever home?

Hi! My name is Noel. I am a gorgeous black cat looking for love. I have lots of love to give. I am a calm cuddly girl who likes to curl up and just be with you. Can we curl up together and just enjoy life? I would love to hang out with you when you have your morning coffee. As laid back as I am, I still love to play, chase toys, and climb. I have been at PAWS for 724 days, that’s almost 2 years. I am so ready for my forever home. I am up-to-date on shots, spayed and micro-chipped. Can you give me a forever home?

Charlie is a playful, lovable, 11-month-old kitten looking for his forever home. He and his brother Bentley were surrendered because of the health of their human owner. Charlie loves climbing and playing with all kinds of toys. He loves having his back and ears rubbed. He is such an awesome kitten with an awesome personality. He would be a great addition to any family. Charlie is up-to-date on his shots, neutered, and micro-chipped. Can you give Charlie a forever home?

Meet Bambi! She is an 8 year old Terrier Mix. Bambi is still learning how to play with other dogs and she is scared of cats. Bambi enjoys playing fetch and going on long walks. Unfortunately, Bambi tested positive for heart-worms, so she is only available to be fostered until her treatment is complete. She has been spayed, micro-chipped, and up to date on her shots. Come meet Bambi TODAY at 455 F. Edward Hebert Blvd, Belle Chasse, LA 70037, or call 504-392-1601 for more information.

Meet Clyde! He is a beautiful 2 year old Terrier Mix. Clyde was found as a stray by Plaquemines Parish Animal Control. He was very friendly with people when he arrived here at PAWS but he wasn’t sure how he felt about other dogs. We have been leash walking him with other dogs and he seems to be doing well. He enjoys playing fetch and getting his belly rubbed. Clyde has been neutered, micro-chipped, and up to date on his medical. Come meet Clyde today at 455 F. Edward Hebert Blvd, Belle Chasse, LA 70037, or call 504-392-1601 for more information.

Belle Chasse Academy 8th grade student, Kiara Jenkins, wrote an essay on the works of Sharon Flake for the 2015 LSU Young Adult Literature Conference & Seminar Writing Contest and won second runner up. She is pictured here with her ELA teacher Mrs. Dagney Paul.

(right) Belle Chasse Academy recently held their Breakfast of Champions to honor those 6th-8th grade students who achieved Principal’s List for the third and fourth grading periods of the school year. Students were joined by their family members for a breakfast and award ceremony to celebrate their success. Pictured are: first row - Robert Dunning, Kajhenne Reese-Soltau, Evelyn Nutt, Joshua Nutt, Caleb Ellis, Zari Hamilton; back row - Sarah Bancroft, Ainslee Archibald, Madison Ruffin, Liam Cooper, Kennedi George, Andrea Ortiz, Nyako Arana. Congratulations to all for this great achievement!

Malasia Douglas and Kathrynne Hester also made their own quilts in Piecemakers. Not only did the students make their own quilts but they also learned about why families started making quilts – to stay warm and use the fabric that was salvageable from their own tattered and worn clothes.

Kenedi Tiggs, Alexis Zamora, Jamierra Pollard, Natalya Fedotova hold up their complete quilts that they made in their after school activity, Piecemakers Quilt Guild. They each made their own quilt either with a pattern out of their color choices or a random design.

Mari McBride of 4th grade playing with the “flubber” she followed a recipe to make in IDGI Games after school activity.

Sixth grade student Robert Braatz III recently passed his test for and received his Teen Black Belt at New Orleans Karate Club located in Belle Chasse. Robert is pictured with his instructor, Sensei Burton Maben.

Our Military Heroes from Mr Map 2011

Mr. Map is currently creating a new cartoon map of Plaquemines Parish. Whether you missed being on the first or second map as a business or individual or just want to renew, now is the time to email [email protected] and place your order. New images are $375 and may include one or two persons as caricatures. More important is the fact that the Military Salute page on the reverse side of the map (see below) was a huge success.

This go-round, you, our readers, have a chance to send us your pictures of family or friends who have served or are currently serving in the military. Just add their name and rank and a line about their service. There is no charge for displaying their picture. We will include as many pictures as we can fit. If you care to place a business card ad around this Salute, you may do so for $225 and receive 25 of these new 2015 Plaquemines Parish cartoon maps this fall.
