WNIT Public Television is Michiana’s story teller. We produce and broadcast the stories of Michiana as told by the people of Michiana. We are fully engaged with our community. In each of the following documentaries, all produced during the current calendar year, WNIT presents programs about Michiana as seen from a distinctly Michiana point of view and as seen virtually nowhere else.

When Newsweek magazine published an article which included South Bend in its list of Ten Cities “with bleak futures ahead,” WNIT decided to face the issue head on. In February, we produced a one-hour, live town hall style program entitled, South Bend: Thriving or Dying? Co-hosts Gary Sieber and Kelly Morgan, along with a panel of six local experts and an audience of about 75, addressed key issues facing South Bend—schools, jobs, crime, housing, recreation and transportation. In June, WNIT produced the second in this series, Michiana: Open for Business followed by a third Town Hall program that featured Michiana’s young professionals.

Our Town: Warsaw – Winona Lake built on the success of Our Town: Goshen to present the stories of Warsaw and Winona Lake as recorded by the residents of those communities. With a little training from WNIT’s professional, award-winning production team, ordinary citizens became volunteer videographers. The “Our Town” series is all about these towns and the people within them who help tell the stories of what makes their corner of the world unique, including historical sites, high school hang-outs, churches, the quaint shopping districts and so many other special places known only to those who live in the area and know the true spirit of their own home town.

WNIT Public Television and Memorial BrainWorks sponsored a four-part series designed to look at aspects of the human brain’s functioning in various stages of life, including early childhood development, the teen years, young adults and older adults. BrainGames is presented as a game show with three teams per episode competing to win. In the fourth and final program on November 17, the winners from the three previous shows will compete for top honors. A panel of experts adds commentary and insight throughout the series, co-hosted by Mark Durocher and the Director of Memorial BrainWorks, Debra Raybold.

The Power of 100: The Story of the 100 Black Men of South Bend follows the creation of the South Bend chapter of the 100 Black Men of America. Many of the children featured in the documentary are raised by single moms who do their best to provide for their children. It’s an uphill battle. Drugs, gangs, bad influences, all vie for their kids’ attention. That’s where the “100” comes in. These stand-out citizens from South Bend range from career professionals to successful businessmen and everyday citizens who have had great successes in their lives. Many of them have also overcome the same situations as the students they mentor.

On November 3, WNIT Public Television will present the PBS special Among the Righteous followed by the local response, From Righteous to Willing: Building Bridges in Michiana, the compelling story of Jews and Muslims working together harmoniously for the greater good of all. WNIT is not only a window for Michiana to view the world, but is also a mirror for Michiana to see itself. WNIT is proud to be the Center for Public Media for 22 incredible counties in northern Indiana and southwest Michigan.

Filmed live at Harrah’s Resort in Atlan-tic City, this holiday special is a journey through the decades of the pop songbook, including everything from doo-wop to contemporary pop done with the unforget-table Straight No Chaser twist. SECRETS OF THE DEAD Tuesdays, 8pm“The World’s Biggest Bomb” – November 1Beginning in the 1950s, American and So-viet scientists engaged in a dangerous race to see who could build and detonate the world’s largest bomb. The results exceeded all expec-tations about how big a bomb could be built. Terrifyingly, the bomb-makers on both sides were flying blind as they pushed the technol-ogy far into unknown territory.

“Deadliest Battle” – November 22Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 was the largest troop offensive in mili-tary history. And the Battle of Stalingrad is arguably the deadliest single battle the world has ever seen. The battle not only changed the course of World War II, but established the Soviet Union as a superpower to be reck-oned with in the long Cold War that lay ahead. More than a half-century later, the full impact of this horrific battle is revealed.

WOMEN, WAR & PEACE Tuesdays, 10pm“The War We Are Living” – November 1In a mountainous region in Colombia’s Pacific southwest, two extraordinary Afro-Colombian women are fighting to hold onto the gold-rich land that has sustained their community through small-scale mining for centuries. Clemencia Carabali and Francia Marquez are part of a powerful network of female leaders who discovered during Co-lombia’s 40-year civil war that women can organize more freely than men. As they defy paramilitary death threats and steadfastly remain on their land, Carabali and Marquez are standing up for a generation of Colom-bians who have been terrorized and forcibly displaced as a deliberate strategy of war.

“War Redefined” – November 8Incisive interviews with leading thinkers, secretaries of state and seasoned survivors of war and peace-making challenge the conven-tional wisdom that war and peace are men’s domain. Their experiences reveal how the post-Cold War proliferation of small arms has changed the landscape of war, with wom-en becoming primary targets and suffering unprecedented casualties. they describe how women are emerging as necessary partners in brokering lasting peace and as leaders in forging new international laws governing conflict.

“Quantum Leap” – November 16Join Brian Greene on a wild ride into the weird realm of quantum physics, which governs the universe on the tiniest of scales. Greene brings quantum mechanics to life in a nightclub like no other, where objects pop in and out of existence and things over here can affect others over there, instantaneously — without anything crossing the space be-tween them.

NATURE Wednesdays, 8pm“Jungle Eagle” – November 9The most powerful raptor in the world, the harpy eagle, hides away deep in the South American jungle. An intrepid team of cameramen steps into the world of this monkey-eating eagle and even risks injury to obtain intimate pictures of them bring-ing large monkeys to the nest to feed their young. The tables soon turn, however, as one of these massive birds starts following the team.

“My Life as a Turkey” – November 16This film chronicles Hutto’s remarkable ex-perience of imprinting wild turkey eggs and raising the hatchlings to adulthood. Deep in the wilds of Florida, Hutto spent each day out and about as a “wild turkey” with his family of chicks — until the day came when he had to let his children grow up and go off on their own. Hutto’s story also became a book, Illumination in the Flatlands.

VIETNAM WAR STORIES Thursday, November 10 8pm InFocus 9pm WNITThree million Americans served in South-east Asia during the Vietnam War. Many veterans are reluctant to speak of war ex-periences, but Vietnam veterans have been even more reluctant because of the contro-versy surrounding their war and the often hostile reception on their return. Vietnam War Stories shares these personal memories of service and sacrifice, and gives us insight into the experience of war.

POV “WHERE SOLDIERS COME FROM” Thursday, November 10 9pm InFocus 10pm WNITThis film follows the four-year journey of childhood friends who join the National Guard after graduating from high school. As it chronicles the young men’s transformation from restless teenagers to soldiers looking for roadside bombs to 23-year-old combat veterans trying to start their lives again, the film offers an intimate look at the young Americans who fight our wars, the families and towns they come from — and the way one faraway conflict changes everything.

UNFORGETTABLE: THE KOREAN WAR Monday, November 28, 10pmKorean War veterans recount their memo-ries of America in the late 1940s and early 1950s, when young men from all over the country were being shipped off to defend South Korea against the advancing Red Army in the north. UNFORGETTABLE: THE KOREAN WAR recalls the “un-won” war that never ended; no one even wanted to call it a war: it was “the Korean conflict” or a “police action.” Finally, it was called the Forgotten War.

The award was presented posthumously for the first time in its 11-year history.

CHRISTMAS AT BELMONT 2011 Thursday, December 22, 8pmTaped at the Schermerhorn Symphony Cen-ter in Nashville, Tennessee, nearly 700 student musicians join the host, the Belmont School of Music faculty and the Nashville Children’s Choir, to present this annual production of traditional carols, classical masterworks, world music and light-hearted seasonal favorites. The program will feature the University Symphony Orchestra, Belmont Chorale, Percussion En-semble, Musical Theatre, Jazz Ensemble and Bluegrass Ensemble.

The film chronicles Cas-sius Clay’s arrival in Miami in the fall of 1960 (fresh from earning a gold medal in the Rome Olympics), his life in Overtown — a neighbor-hood that was considered “Harlem South” and a vibrant center of black entertainment and commerce — and his affiliation with the famed Fifth Street Gym in Miami Beach.

THE BOTANY OF DESIRE Tuesday, December 27, 8pmFeaturing Michael Pollan and based on his best-selling book, this special takes viewers on an eye-opening exploration of the human re-lationship with the plant world — seen from the plants’ point of view. Narrated by Frances McDormand, the program shows how four familiar species — the apple, the tulip, mari-juana and the potato — evolved to satisfy our yearnings for sweetness, beauty, intoxication and control.

BrainGamesBrainGames is the fast-paced, four-part series that looks at aspects of the human brain’s functioning in various stages of life, including early childhood development, the teen years, young adults and older adults.

Each program is hosted by Mark Durocher and the Director of Memorial BrainWorks, Debra Raybold, and features three teams completing to win and a panel of experts to add commentary and insight.

Did any Arabs save Jews during the Holocaust? That’s the question

author Robert Satloff had in mind when he set out to discover the

lost, true stories of survival, courage and betrayal in Arab lands

during World War II. The history of the Holocaust in Europe is

well-documented, but the history of what happened to the Jewish

people of North Africa has been mostly forgotten, even in the

very towns and cities where it occurred. The truth is remarkable:

not only did Jews in Arab lands suffer many of the same elements

of persecution as Jews in Europe — arrests, deportations,

confiscations and forced labor — but there were also hopeful

stories of “righteous” Arabs reaching out to protect them.

WNIT will broadcast Satloff ’s “Among the Righteous” on

Thursday, November 3 at 8pm.

This will be followed at 9pm by a live, local program “From

Righteous to Willing: Building Bridges in Michiana,” a

discussion of the harmonious and positive relationship between

Michiana Jews and Muslims.

In September 2010, members

of Temple Beth El, including

Rabbi Eric Siroka, extended

a hand to the Islamic

Society of Michiana to wish

them a Happy Ramadan.

The good wishes led to

exchanges and invitation

to visit each other’s houses

of worship and a bond was forged that lasts to this day.

What made the difference? Why here in South Bend

did two groups who have often opposed each other find

commonality? Skepticism seems to be the rule between Muslims

and Jews, yet members of the two congregations say the bonds

are real and a lasting relationship can truly continue.

We will examine these issues in WNIT’s From Righteous to

Willing one-hour special. Guests from the Jewish Federation and

Temple Beth El will come together in the Ganey Studio Complex

with guests from the Islamic Federation of Michiana to discuss

their relationship, their aspirations and the issues that surround

Jewish and Islamic relations. Co-hosts Gary Sieber and Kelly

Morgan will lead the thoughtful, energetic discussions between

the guests and studio audience as we explore the uniqueness of

these warm exchanges and attitudes. We’ll discover why these

good feelings are nurtured here in Michiana and how it can be

duplicated elsewhere.

Angel Hernandez, WNIT’s vice president of production says,

a place where people strive for better understanding, hope and

belief in each other.” Mary Pruess, station president and general

manager adds, “We are so proud to bring this program to viewers

across Michiana. We are equally proud of our Jewish and Islamic

communities as well as the support from our entire region for

making it possible. Without the support of our communities, we

could not bring this discussion to light.”

The WNIT Directors’ Circle represents a very dedicated and select group of individuals who, by their commitment, contribute to the total annual support which is the foundation of WNIT’s operating budget. These essential annual contributions make possible the great programs that everyone in Michiana enjoys.

David Findlay

This month, WNIT recognizes David Findlay in the Supporter Spotlight. David serves as president and chief financial officer of Lakeland Corporation and Lake City Bank, headquar-tered in Warsaw. In November, David will begin his term as chairman of the WNIT Board of Directors. David was named to the WNIT Board in 2005 and served on the Development Committee from 2005 – 2008. He served as treasurer of the Board from 2007 to 2009, has participated on the Budget, Finance and Audit committees since 2007 and served as vice chairman of the Board since 2009.

With his many affiliations and service on regional boards, David has always focused on WNIT as a capital campaign contributor, a program underwriter, underwriter of OUR TOWN: WARSAW – WINONA LAKE, ECONOMIC OUTLOOK and INSIDE INDIANA BUSINESS as well as a member of the WNIT Directors’ Circle.
