Dear WNIT Supporters:

Why do the summer months go by so quickly and the winter months drag on? Now, that would be a good topic to tackle on our Big Questions program! I do hope you are enjoying your summer and still finding time to stay up with your favorite WNIT/PBS programs.

I’ve recently returned from the PBS Annual Meeting. It is a time for inspiration, an opportunity to gather a great deal of information, and a chance to mingle with PBS colleagues from all over the country. The upcoming season looks great with two new Ken Burns documentaries in the pipeline for 2014-2015. Downton Abbey returns and additional quality British dramas will be coming our way. All this happens because of your support. Thank you!

As you can tell by the cover of this month’s Planner, we are ready to go with WNIT’s second year of Michiana’s Rising Star. Our competition started in March with a call for entries. Our judges selected the 100 top performances and assigned them to one of four regional locations: Warsaw, Elkhart, South Bend and Benton Harbor. Judges selected five winners from each location.

Beginning Thursday, July 10th from Warsaw, and on the following three Thursdays in July, we will broadcast each performance from the individual regional auditions. You will learn which five performers were picked by the judges then you, the viewing audience, will narrow that selection to three finalists.

Those three finalists from each regional will then advance to our “live” week which begins Sunday, August 3rd. Studio judges and our viewers will keep voting for the strongest performances until we crown the 2014 Michiana’s Rising Star on Friday, August 8th.

But, wait! There’s more. This year, WNIT is also adding a Dinner/Viewing Party at the Century Center. You can join us for a yummy dinner, watch the live broadcast, enjoy in-person performances from Michiana’s Rising Star contestants, dance to the music of a live band, and meet the winner after dinner. Be ready for a fabulous evening. Fill a table or come as individuals. Our office can give you all the details … 574-675-WNIT (9648), or information is always on the web, www.wnit.org.

Enjoy your upcoming favorite shows on WNIT – PBS Michiana. We’re here because you support us.

Best wishes,

Greg Giczi President & General Manager

David Gundlach’s Feel Good Hollywood Story Comes to WNIT After losing his father at a very young age, Elkhart native David Gundlach decided that he wanted to follow in his dad’s footsteps and go into the insurance business. Following college, Gundlach made his way to London and began working for a subsidiary of Lloyd’s of London. It was about this time he focused on a new way of selecting people – by their lifestyle profiles – so he could determine their propensities to make claims. This observation led him to form his own insurance company, Hastings Direct, and start issuing auto and motorcycle insurance. The company was a runaway hit and, in ten years, David was a multimillionaire.

Although he wanted to return to Elkhart and his mother, David also had Hollywood in his blood. He had attended the University of Southern California, where one of his dorm mates was Ron Howard, who would become one of Hollywood’s most successful directors. David relished the LA lifestyle, with multiple multi-million dollar homes, a personal collection of Bentleys, Rolls Royces, Ferraris and Corvettes and an art collection worth millions. David even partnered with Dean Zanuck, the

son of Richard Zanuck and grandson of Hollywood’s legendary Darryl F. Zanuck. Together, Dean and David produced GET LOW starring Robert Duvall, Bill Murray and Sissy Spacek.

But through it all he never forgot his hometown and the mother he loved dearly. After a serendipitous meeting with the new executive director of the Elkhart County Community Foundation Pete McCowen, Gundlach told McCowen, “Kiddo, I think you know more about what I should do with my money than I do.” They agreed to partner on some donations for the Foundation but, soon after that meeting, David passed away, leaving his entire fortune to the ECCF and to his mother.

WNIT is proud to present its new documentary DAVID GUNDLACH: THE GIFT on Thursday, July 24 at 9:30pm, with additional airings on July 26, 4pm and July 27, 7pm, all on channel 34.1.

August 2014 Summer Membership CampaignWNIT’s Membership Campaign begins Friday, August 8 and runs through Sunday, August 24. The on-air Membership Campaigns remain the most effective way of encouraging viewers to join the WNIT family of supporters. While these drives represent less than two percent of our annual broadcast hours, they do provide WNIT with the majority of revenue required to purchase and produce the regular and local programming enjoyed by everyone throughout northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan.

So get ready to experience an interesting and informative line-up of special programs for the entire family. And be sure to tell your family and friends why you think supporting WNIT is important.

It’s Viewers Like You who make a real difference to everyone in our community.

THANK YOU for supporting WNIT!

Win Tickets from WNIT!Provide your email address to WNIT and you’ll have multiple opportunities throughout the year to win complimentary tickets to performances and venues throughout the Michiana region. This past year, WNIT members enjoyed complimentary tickets to area performances, including the Elkhart Jazz Festival, the Wagon Wheel Theatre, the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra, the South Bend Civic Theatre, the Children’s Choir of Michiana and the South Bend Symphony, among others. Members also received an email invitation to a private performance of Shrek the Musical at the historical Bristol Opera House as our way of saying thank you for supporting WNIT. If you are an active member of WNIT and would like the opportunity to receive complimentary ticket offers please provide your email address to Joanne Schloss at [email protected].

WNIT does not sell or share email addresses of our members to any other organization or entity.

Directors’ Circle

Craig Fulmer

WNIT remembers Directors’ Circle member Craig Fulmer, who died on May 21 of pulmonary complications in Baltimore. Fulmer was a businessman and community leader who was one of downtown Elkhart’s biggest champions. He was part of a group of business leaders called the Elkhart 2010 Coalition that rallied public and private support for downtown redevelopment projects, including the Lerner Theatre renovation, the IUSB Elkhart Building and the RiverWalk. Craig and his wife Connie were steadfast Directors’ Circle members, and WNIT appreciated their support and guidance.
