Research in Progress "(Google) Maps of Digital Libraries: Does the Map Metaphor Work?"
The goal of this project is to assess if the by now common use of network visualizations of information collections such as digital libraries aids users of those collections to find desired content. In particular, we will assess if a network/map visualization provides advantages/benefits over standard text-based searches. Measured variables are time spent searching, amount of content viewed, precision and recall, perceived utility of the found documents and confidence of searchers having found what they were looking for.

Research in Progress "Education Standards and Lesson Plans – An Information Retrieval Perspective - or - Retrieving
Task-relevant Documents Using Multifaceted Graph-Based Linkages" (On-Going) Development of national educational standards is a hot topic frequently mentioned in the popular press and discussed in the political arena. One important element of the discourse is often overlooked. What can we do to make it possible for educators to quickly and accurately identify resources appropriate for classroom use in addressing created standards? We plan to leverage our previously collected and unique set of data matching dozens of educational standards to hundreds of educational resources in a study of how information retrieval techniques can be appropriately adapted to real needs in this important domain. Developed insights and techniques should also be of broader interest for the information retrieval/knowledge management community.
"Exogenous IT Bias"
IT professionals and organizational managers perceive IT systems differently. In the vocabulary of socio-materiality research, IT artifacts such as IT governance tools, infrastructure, and IS policies interact with a tendency to see the components and parts of a system to create and affordance which affects attitudes and decisions. We call the predilection to see the “trees” in the IT “forest” exogenous bias. We have observed in previous and on-going work that IT bias somewhat predictably affects an individual’s understanding of the connection between IT best practices and IT quality. Better

understanding that relationship can lead to better tools for IT and help practitioners better understand and shape the IT processes in their organization.
"IT Governance: Norms, Not Checklists" (On-Going)
We have distilled a set of IT norms (guiding paradigms for IT governance) from existing frameworks. We hypothesize that adoption of these norms is a key component and useful predictor of successful IT governance initiatives. Further, since small organizations are unlikely to adopt systematic IT governance frameworks, it may be that organizational adoption of these norms can assist in reducing risks and enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of IT operations.
This perspective is informed by current work on the need to acknowledge an ‘entangled’ view of IT research. An entangled view considers both IT artifacts and organizational perspectives. We are demonstrating that this is not only a gap in researcher perspective - it also has corresponding impact on IT practice, IT process assessment, and IT success assessment.
To test this hypothesis we have developed a survey to assess organizational adoption of these norms and plan to check for correlation between norm adoption and measures of IT effectiveness. If we prove to be correct, this work will have implications for the IT governance community, for small businesses, and for business information systems education.
"Processing XBRL to Visualize Accounting Flows In Non-Profits" (On-Going)
Despite relatively consistent representations of key financial information in integrated financial statements, little work has explored development of a generalized visualization of accounting flows. Non-profit and small business management or boards of directors, in particular, could benefit from clear communication on financial operations and position.
Can an animated, generalized tool for visualizing accounting flows use readily available data to support useful comparison and analysis of organizational data? That is, can we develop a visual counterpart to standardized integrated financial statements that investors and educators will find useful in assessing organizations, comparing firms, and teaching accounting concepts.
In particular, do publically available filings for non-profits contain enough data and is that data suitably organized to a) store in some flavor of XBRL and then b) visualize to enhance financial understanding.

"Process Analysis Work Assessment" (On-Going)
Set of three exercises building on one another and increasing in difficulty to assess student's ability to synthesize process desriptions and develop a course of improvement using a choice of tools and simulation processes.
"The adoption and use of Amazon's EC2 Web Service in an Introductory Computer Networking
Course" (On-Going) This project develops creative lab exercises that enable students in an introductory computer networking course to use a cloud computing service offered by Amazon. This project is supported by Amazon Educational Grants.
"The Impact of Relational and Task-Oriented Leaders on Virtual Team Performance" (On-Going)
Both task and social interaction elements are necessary in virtual teams. However, in a virtual team environment, the influence of the leader on these elements and the effect of this influence on team performance are not as well understood. In all leadership roles, past research suggests that communication effectiveness and leadership effectiveness is critical in virtual teams (Kayworth and Leidner. 2001-02). Our study aims to contribute to the understanding of how virtual team leaders influence team performance through their efforts (by communicating effectively and providing effective leadership) at supporting task accomplishment and social interaction. Preliminary data analysis and a 3-page extended abstract has been completed. All authors have contributed equally thus far.
"Virtual teams in an Introductory Management Information Systems (MIS) Course" (Planning)
The study will address the following research questions concerning the use of SharePoint and/or wikis in an Information Systems Course in the Executive MBA program:
1. What is the impact of some features of SharePoint and/or wiki technology on student participation, performance and perceptions?
2. What is the impact of instructor online facilitation style on student participation, performance and perceptions?
3. Do leaders emerge from the student teams? If so, are there common characteristics associated with the leaders of the virtual teams?
4. Is the presence of one or more recognized team leaders associated with virtual team performance?
