By looking at examples of large-scaleprojects, you identify frameworks for usingproject finance, such as the factorsconsidered by sponsors and lenders whenassessing project finance structures. Youexamine how to assess and allocate risksand rewards, and identify the challenges of

forecasting for long-term projects andensuring the alignment of all stakeholders’interests. You also explore how to deal withthe difficulties of valuing highly leveragedprojects.

Hands-on experience

In a series of assignments, you test outwhat you’ve learned from the lecturesand guest speakers. You analyse whatthe risks were in each case, assessingthe value of projects and pinpointing

the factors that made a deal succeedor fail, then present your findingsand recommendations. For your finalassignment, you assess a real-life solarpower project to decide whether youwould make the loan. These practicalexercises give you the toolkit and theconfidence to apply to your own projectsback at work.

Project finance also has a key role toplay in emerging markets. Discover thedistinctive issues that arise in theseregions, such as how governments canuse project finance to gain multinationalsponsors. You focus, too, on the specificsof Public Private Partnerships and PrivateFinance Initiatives.

How it worked for me…How does the programme benefit participants and theirorganisation? We let one past participant tell you…

Antonio Correia-Sampaio, (Brazilian)Senior Manager, Oil and Gas, WiproTechnologies

My initial reasons for joining this programme stemmed from a desireto understand more about the subject

generally. I also had a specific interest in learning how to structure financialtransactions.

I have a business consulting role atWipro that involves analysing the needsof the organisation and translating them

internally to the IT team. My current jobdoesn’t require a great deal of in-depthfinance knowledge, but I wanted to roundout my financial skill-set and professionalexpertise in anticipation of more senior

 positions to come.

London Business School’s programme appealed partly because of the London base – it was hugely convenient to be able to hop on the Tube and be in class in 20 minutes. The School also has a great brand, and the fact that it has a strong finance portfolio and faculty was a big incentive. I was lucky enough to have the time and the inclination to study something that really interested me, so Itook the opportunity and went for it.

One thing that really struck me aboutthe programme was the strength anddepth of the class network. It was

great to interact with people from suchdiverse backgrounds. Everyone broughttheir own views and experiences to the

table, creating an engaging dynamicwhich meant that, even though we werecovering a good deal of work, the longdays went by in a flash.

I met a range of very interesting people across different industries – our groupwas a veritable UN with participants fromcountries as far afield as Brazil, Qatar,Morocco, Portugal and Australia. I also

managed to make a number of newcontacts on the technology front, whichwas a totally unexpected benefit.

We had different professors teaching across a range of topics – no two dayswere the same, and I felt very privilegedto have such a variety of viewpointsto consider. Different faculty looked at

project finance problems from different angles. I found the class with ChristopherHennessy particularly interesting becauseof his quantitative approach and focus onthe use of option modelling to ascertainthe asset’s value at the end of a project. He was also very helpful in providing mewith additional articles to read.

Even though I hadn’t identified specifictakeaways in advance of the programme, one benefit is that it really helped tocoalesce my ideas. I now approachengagements with a more structuredway of thinking, enabling me to orderthings more effectively in my mind. This alignment happened not so much

because of the course content itself, but as a result of discussions and interaction between classmates and professors.

Project finance is an area that I enjoy; it also has good synergies with oil and gas.I’ve achieved what I wanted and improved

my skill-set. As well as understanding the information technology that enables oil and gas to be produced, I now have a better grasp of how the financial aspectsof large-scale projects work. I have properframeworks to use and, because I’m ableto talk with greater confidence aboutfinancial issues, I have more credibility.Within Wipro and with my clients, I

have more weight as a well-rounded professional who understands differentfacets of the business.

“Our group was averitable UN withparticipants fromBrazil, Qatar,Morocco, Portugaland Australia.”
