WELCOME TO

BOX OFFICE: 01273 464440ROPETACKLECENTRE.CO.UK

We are really delighted to be able to publish a brochure again after a year like no other. Although we closed for a few months, we were never idle, thanks to a determined team of staff and volunteers who put on films and smaller gigs when we were able in order to keep spirits up. The spring programme reflects the need for more space both on the stage and in the audience, but we think you’ll love the list of shows, films, and children’s events we have lined up. We never compromise on quality, as you can see from the names that appear on the cover, plus we have movies, talks, comedy and children’s events to keep everyone entertained.

Thanks for all your continued support and have a healthy and happy 2021. Come and be inspired. We look forward to seeing you soon.

SHORT STORIES, TALL TALES Hannah Summers is an actress, a singer and a mum and combines each talent to bring interactive, imaginative play for parents/guardians and their toddlers. Hannah tells a different story each month, through film slides, song, and creative fun. Each family unit

has their own space and hygienically-packed props, and adults are encouraged to just enjoy quality time with their little ones. Each story is described in full within the brochure, but for quick reference, the dates/stories are as follows:

The Big Top - January 7th & 15th The Giraffe Who Wouldn’t Bath - February 11th & 19th The Hare and the Tortoise - March 11th & 19th The Gingerbread Man - April 9th & 16th.

Last autumn’s Local and Live Festival, a joint partnership between Ropetackle and Shoreham Wordfest to celebrate the talent right here on our doorstep, got off to a great start. It was, however, paused during the November lockdown, and resumes in January... come and take a look!

BLOCKBUSTER FILM:

ROCKS “What a wonderful, heart-breaking, life-affirming gem of a movie this is.” The Guardian, September 2020.

Sixteen-year-old Nigerian British girl, Shola, and her little brother Emmanuel live on an East London estate with little money. When their mother abandons them and Social Services are alerted, Shola is forced to take Emmanuel on the run, relying on the refuge of her friends to keep them from being separated. Through the act of simply listening to a story and committing to selling it through the right voices, the film-makers have made a piece that outshines the work of its more polished, prestigious peers by light years.

BIRD IN THE BELLY “The rapid evolution of Bird In The Belly into one of our finest folk acts is a joy to behold” - Folk Radio UK

Bird in the Belly is a Brighton-based folk group consisting of folk-duo Hickory Signals (Laura Ward and Adam Ronchetti), alt-folk singer-songwriter Ben Webb (Jinnwoo, Green Ribbons), and multi-instrumentalist and producer Tom Pryor. Together the band collect little known and forgotten lyrics, poems and stories from around the UK, and set them to their own music which is hypnotic and sparse, recalling both the 1960’s folk revival and the acid/folk rock of the early 70’s.

Over the last few years the band has released two records (The Crowing, 2018 and Neighbours and Sisters, 2019) to critical acclaim, and has spent a lot of time on the road playing to audiences across the UK. Album number 3 is in progress, with the band using their time (between lockdowns) in the studio, writing and recording.

WILLE & THE BANDITS “It felt like ZZ Top was having a three-way affair with Lynyrd Skynyrd and Black Label Society ” - HRH magazine.

Wille & The Bandits are the very definition of eclectic. They adopt the musical essence, nostalgia and discovery of the late 60s and 70s and mix rock and roll with a contemporary approach, combining elements of world music, dance music and hip-hop to create something unique.

They have toured with the likes of Deep Purple, Status Quo, Joe Bonamassa, the Jon Butler Trio and Warren Haynes and have appeared at Glastonbury, the Isle of Wight Festival and even the London Olympics.

The music press has nothing but good things to say about the band and all heartily agree on one thing: the best way to get the most out of Wille & the Bandits is by seeing them in concert.

Due to the limit on audience numbers, the band will perform two shows on the same day so everyone gets a chance to enjoy the music!

DYAD PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS:

I, ELIZABETH

★★★★★★ ‘A riveting and heart-wrenching play… a breathtaking creation. This is a performance that will haunt you and one that’s not to be missed.” Edinburgh Evening News

At a vital crossroads in history, a young queen steps from the shadows to unburden herself of her many troubles and reveal her innermost thoughts on marriage, succession, religion, war and the challenges to her throne. Defying the establishment by choosing to lead her country alone, she

forsakes her own dreams and desires, to steer England towards national and spiritual security. But time is against her.

Elizabeth I: Queen at 25, political phoenix and famously unmarried, she was the most educated woman of her Age – but who was the woman beneath the crown? Using only Elizabeth’s own letters, speeches and writings, solo performer Rebecca Vaughan (Orlando, Jane Eyre: An Autobiography, Dalloway, Female Gothic, Austen’s Women) continues her successful collaboration with Olivier award-winning director Guy Masterson, to explore the queen’s struggle to reconcile the desires of womanhood with the duties of sovereignty.

MARTIN HARLEY “I’m ready to make a bigger noise… Muddy Waters invented electricity right?”

Having created a deep impression on the acoustic blues roots and Americana scene with his last two Nashville recorded albums, Harley’s gritty electric album Roll With The Punches, recorded in a remote chapel deep in the wilds of Pembrokeshire, takes country blues riffs to the electric bottleneck slide guitar and serves them with sweet vocal harmonies. It features some of the UK’s best musicians including Rex Horan on bass, Harry Harding on drums and Jonny Henderson on Hammond organ.

In 2020, Martin was nominated as Acoustic Blues Artist of the year and Instrumentalist of the year at the UK Blues Awards. Music Radar placed him #7 in the World Greatest Blues Guitarist poll. In 2018 Martin Harley was ranked #16 in the World’s Best Acoustic Guitarist in Total Guitar Magazine and he was nominated as Instrumentalist of the Year at the Americana Music Association UK Awards.

If that doesn’t impress, come and see for yourself why his fanbase keeps growing year-on-year.

MAROON TOWN

Back by popular demand! When London-based 8-piece Maroon Town first started a little over 30 years ago, they were the first band to mix ska and reggae with rap, funk and Latin/cumbia. Their first album and singles, produced by John Bradbury of The Specials, got the attention of the international music community and led to extensive touring over many years.Their 6th and latest album Freedom Call released in 2018 on Brixton Records blends conscious reggae, jazz, and big beat ska, as well as an up-tempo ska collaboration with renowned Basque Country reggae, rock and ska singer Fermin Muguruza. Now they’re cooking better than ever, with new sounds and, as always, a show based on pure energy and superb musicianship. Sunday 11th April | 8pm | £22.50 standing.

SHORT STORIES, TALL TALES PRESENTS:

THE GINGERBREAD MAN “Come and meet my curious gingerbread man who discovers he has arms and legs and a cherry nose! He moves up hill and down dale, he doesn’t get tired or out of puff, not like the rest of us! He cheekily taunts the farm characters who all want gingerbread for their tea, calling ‘run run as fast as you can, you can’t catch me I’m the gingerbread man!’ “

TALISMAN

“For someone not into reggae, if there was ever a band that would convert me, Talisman would be that band!” – Mr. T, Lights Out Zine

Talisman were one of the UK’s top Roots Reggae bands in the later 70s and early 80s. The band’s prowess earned them support slots with acts as diverse as Burning Spear, The Clash and The Rolling Stones. They reformed in 2011 with two of the original line-up, after 30 years apart; to support the re-release of their classic roots single Dole Age on the brand new compilation album Dole Age – The 1981 Reggae Collection. One of Bristol’s and the UK’s finest live acts were back and ready to party once again.

Originally formed in 1977, Talisman were consummate performers constantly vying for the title of one of the country’s most popular live reggae bands.

Until 2011 the only way to hear Talisman had been to track down their two difficult to find singles from 1981, or their two later LPs, “Takin’ The Strain” from 1984 and “Jam Rock” from 1990. Now after nearly 30 years Bristol Archive Records lovingly compiled an album of the band at their peak in 1981. Not only does the record contain the band’s two original 7” singles, but also eight carefully selected live cuts from classic shows at Glastonbury Festival’s main stage and other infamous shows.

THE BRASS FUNKEYS Spirited second-line revelry, galloping gypsy czárdas, soulful jazz funeral marches, pumping brass-driven funk! The Brass Funkeys are an 8-piece London-based brass band who draw on the traditions of New Orleans. Whether they’re performing as a powerful amplified stage show or as a totally mobile marching band, these talented musicians promise an eclectic live show bursting at the seams with ideas and infectious energy.

The group’s second album Rabble Rouser features 13 tracks of original compositions by band members and unusual covers such as Gorillaz’s Dirty Harry and Royce Wood Junior’s Honeydripper. Rabble Rouser marks the Brass Funkeys out as a trailblazer in the new generation of UK brass bands, while still holding true to the New Orleans sound.

TANKUS THE HENGE, WITH SUPPORT FROM BABY HUSBAND Tankus the Henge have built their reputation on unforgettable songwriting, spectacular live performances and relentless hard work, playing hundreds of shows across Europe and building a devoted fan base along the way. Their funk-fuelled repertoire is wildly eclectic, ranging from New Orleans-inspired swing to heavy rock riffs, and since their beginnings in the ratty alleyways of London’s Soho, the band has evolved into a wild groove machine.

Musically inspired by bands from the British invasion of the 60s and artists such as Tom Waits, Blur, Randy Newman and Queens Of The Stone Age, and with lyrics influenced by 20th Century American Literature, specifically the Beat Generation and Gonzo journalism, Tankus the Henge defy categorisation. Their hair-raising show, like no other, has to be seen and heard to be believed. Like a psychedelic, rock ‘n’ roll octopus – only with four more legs.

Buy the ticket, take the ride.

MATINÉE FILM:

THE INVISIBLE MAN

Almost unbearably tense and thematically rich.

When Cecilia (Elisabeth Moss) receives news of her ex-boyfriend’s death, she begins to rebuild her life for the better. However, her sense of reality is brought into question when she begins to suspect that her deceased boyfriend is not really dead.

In this film, the invisibility concept is a compellingly appropriate means to explore abusive relationships, agoraphobia, gaslighting and toxic masculinity.

Tuesday 27th April | 2pm | £4RICHARD DURRANT Guitarist and composer Richard Durrant returns to Ropetackle to kick off his first solo tour in over a year.

This concert includes music from his latest album Rewilding, which was recorded during lockdown.

“Throughout all that has happened, the concept of rewilding (nature’s path of least resistance) has held my interest,” Richard says. “Many ideas for beautiful sounds and combinations of instruments arrived as a consequence, including turtle doves, contra-bassoon, nightingales, cello, cuckoos, ukuleles, oboe and berimbau. They’re all there on the new album.”,

Once he’s entertained the Shoreham crowd, Richard will get on his bicycle and carry out his Midsummer concert tour, which goes from Orkney to Brighton.

Friday 30th April | 8pm | £17 & £5 under 18s.
