Prior each match always brief your photographer and inform him/her about any special events that might occur (awards, birthdays, milestones, celebrities in the VIP or stands) and about specific players portrait that should be made (top scorer of the competition or a player returning to your club in an opponent’s uniform, two brothers meeting as rivals, etc…) Here is guideline of what your photographers should look out for during, prior and after the match. Before the match:

- beauty picture of a full arena (if there are not too many empty seats) - run in of the players with the light show (if any)

During the match

- Both teams attacking in match - Both goalkeepers in action or showing emotions - Key players showing emotions - Both coaches gesturing at the bench or at time-outs - Fan(s) close-up - Fair play gestures – lifting the opponent from the court after his fall, handshakes, hugging of

opponents After the match

- winning celebration - handshake with fans

The photos you submit shall tell story that starts with the arrival of the team on court and conclude with the celebrations of the winning team. Photos we like

Athletic and determined Handball is action-packed with lots of decisive moves that happen within seconds. This photo perfectly captures all of it: the dynamic movement, the speed, the one-on-one action with the opponent and the tension prior to the goal

Team spirit There a plenty of ways to photograph a team timeout or a team line-up. But there is no better way than capturing the moment of pride and team spirit like it is done here

Genuine emotions Players are strong and determined on the court, but once the match is decided and they hear the final whistle, they show true and genuine emotions no matter if they win or lose. Close-ups and a clear focus help to capture those emotions

Absolute thrill Looking at this photo, you immediately know the story and feel the adrenalin and energy that this player shares with the audience in this very moment. This is the emotion of the goal.

Accessible idols Fans admire and support the players and players respect their fans and engage with them. They are approachable and share their moments of victory or disappointment with their followers. This makes handball special

Fair play gestures There are many moments in a handball game expressing the fair-play spirit of this sport. Players help to lift up their opponents from the court, they shake hands of their rivals, they embrace each other, or even act as physiotherapists like at this picture.

Fans devotion Handball has great and friendly fans and we want to show their devotion, excitement, joy or sadness.

Photos we don’t like

Focus Sometimes less is more. Avoid photos that give fans, setup and match action equal importance. Choose one motive or message that you want to communicate in a photo even if it is a wide angle shot

Movement This might be a decisive action during the last seconds of a game. Unfortunately the speed and thrill of the game are not visible in this photo. Try to capture the movement and avoid rather static postures of players

Usability Some situations are not the best starting point to take excellent photos. Try to always make the best out of what you have. For this photo to be usable the focus should be put on the official ceremony. Avoid showing empty seats

Tough, but not rough Try to focus on positive aspects, such as the will to win, the strength or the physical intensity of handball. Avoid showing attributes like pain or aggressiveness

Distance & angle Handball is the most athletic indoor team sport. In this example the distance to the ground is not visible. However, it is the height of the jump that would underline the player’s athletic abilities

Team line-up needs team spirit The line-up is an emotional moment of team spirit and pride. Try to capture this spirit rather than documenting the situation. Focus on what is really relevant and captivating

More mistakes made at the selection of pictures:

- a limited variety of pictures – we would like to have a wider variety of pictures from one match, not just ten action pictures taken from the same position and with the same playing action – attacking player jumping and holding the ball above his head

- bad position of photographer – many halls do not have stands (seats) all around the playing court. Therefore the photographer should never stand on the spectators side, but always opposite of them to use fans as the background of the pictures

- poor technical parameters of pictures – for each match every club should be able to hire a professional photographer. It requires more than iphone or semi-professional camera to deliver high quality pictures from a handball game, especially taking account that some arenas might not have a sufficient lightning system – if for some reason the professional photographer/equipment is not available try not to focus on action pictures as they are bound to be blurred. Try to catch emotions of players after scoring the goal, or saving a shot or during time-outs

- just one team’s action – you need two teams for a game and therefore we need both sides represented on your pictures.
