in care for senior adults and their family members.


Each year we look forward to sharing the Phoebe Ministries Annual Report because it showcases the outstanding impact that our employees, volunteers and

donors have on our residents and the Eastern Pennsylvania community. This year is no different. Thanks to the many gifts of the Phoebe community, we continue to thrive as we provide fullness of life and the highest quality care and lifestyle to each of our residents.

This care was visibly highlighted when Phoebe Wyncote received the highest available 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Only ten percent of skilled nursing communities in the state receive a 5-star rating.

Also, Phoebe continued its leadership in dementia care and education. The Legacy Place Neighborhood at Phoebe Allentown earned the status of The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s Excellence in Care Program of Distinction. Legacy Place is one of only thirty dementia care facilities nationally to receive such recognition, three of which are Phoebe communities.

Moreover, we announced the hiring of Kelly Carney, Ph.D., CMC, as Executive Director of the forthcoming Phoebe Center for Excellence in Dementia Care. Dr. Carney will work to continue the growth of our memory support and dementia care service line as well as to create a coordinated network of services and support for Phoebe residents, caregivers, and the community.

We also introduced TeleHealth services for residents with a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease, one of only two skilled nursing providers in the region to do so. This service, provided in exclusive partnership with Lehigh Valley Health Network, is just the start of what will soon be a growing TeleHealth offering available to Phoebe residents. Stay tuned.

Our commitment to excellent care was further HYLGHQFHG�ZLWK�WKH�KLULQJ�RI �3KRHEH·V�À�UVW�&KLHI �0HGLFDO�2IÀ�FHU��7KRPDV�5HQDOGR��'2��'U��5HQDOGR�will work to enhance medical services at each of Phoebe’s four health care communities, expanding the use of TeleHealth technology, and facilitating relationships with hospital and medical staff providers.

The past year also presented new challenges to our ministry, most notably an eleven percent cut in Medicare reimbursement for Phoebe’s services. We are proud to report that Phoebe met this test head-on and in so doing increased our level of charitable care to residents from $8.4 million in Fiscal Year 2011 to $10.8 million last year. This represents a 32% percent increase, and it means that we can continue to ensure fullness of life to every resident, no matter his or her economic status. That dollar amount is the highest level of charity and benevolence provided in our history.

��7KH�À�UVW�VWDJH�RI �WKH�UHSRVLWLRQLQJ�RI �WKH�3KRHEH�Allentown campus, which saw the renovation of resident living and gathering spaces in The Terrace, and interior and exterior updates to the Health Care Center.

��3KRHEH�:\QFRWH·V�LQWURGXFWLRQ�RI �´&KDQJH�WR�&DUH�µ�an innovative program to reduce fall rates and maintain the highest standards of care for skilled nursing residents, and the Fish! philosophy, which LQFUHDVHV�PRUDOH�E\�HQFRXUDJLQJ�HPSOR\HHV�WR�´SOD\��FKRRVH�\RXU�DWWLWXGH��PDNH�WKHLU�GD\��DQG�EH�SUHVHQW�µ

��7KH�FRPSOHWLRQ�RI �7KH�6SULQJKRXVH�3DUN�DW�3KRHEH�Richland. This patio and garden were designed to be a PXOWL�VHQVRU\�HQYLURQPHQW�ZKLFK�LQFOXGHV�D�À�UH�SLW��D�handicapped-accessible gazebo, and a working toy train and track that stretches across the garden.

The list could go on, and all of us at Phoebe have you to thank for these and all of the successes we witness daily at our sixteen facilities. Our residents are our family, and we take great pride in the service we provide to our aging population. We will continue to innovate, to educate, and to lead by example through our faithful care for seniors.

Contributions to Phoebe Ministries are essential in providing fullness of life to the over 7,500 people whose lives we touch every year. Support from our donors funds exceptional care and programming for our residents and also enhances education for those who serve our aging population.

During the past year charitable gifts have made many special projects possible across the Phoebe organization.

On the Phoebe Berks campus, The Pastor Chuck Galley Relaxation Garden was developed to provide a relaxing retreat for residents. This new outdoor VSDFH�IHDWXUHV�FRYHUHG�VHDWLQJ��IUDJUDQW�Á�RZHUV��and a peaceful water feature. The garden provides a handicapped-accessible outdoor area that is an oasis of relaxation and peace, and it was funded by donations.

Donor contributions also help make it possible to purchase specialized equipment. Phoebe Wyncote is using a Snoezelen machine to improve quality of life for residents diagnosed with dementia. A Snoezelen is similar to a large lava-lamp and uses a mixture of colored lights, water, and bubbling action to create a calming, therapeutic, and stimulating effect for residents on the dementia spectrum.

Moyer Hall at Phoebe Allentown has long been the center of many activities for the community. During the past year, renovations occurred to make the space more visually appealing and welcoming. The new focal point of the room is a custom made, multi-window stained glass design featuring a beautiful rainbow. Each section RI �WKH�À�YH�SLHFH�ZLQGRZ�GLVSOD\�ZDV�IXQGHG�E\�GRQRUV��The transformation of Moyer Hall includes the purchase of a new altar and baptismal font, also funded by donor gifts.

At Phoebe Richland, residents are enjoying their VSDFH�ZLWK�QHZ�´KRPH�OLNHµ�OLJKWLQJ��7KH�´,OOXPLQDWLRQ�3URMHFWµ�LQWURGXFHG�XSJUDGHG�OLJKWLQJ�LQ�UHVLGHQW�URRPV�E\�DGGLQJ�IXOO�VSHFWUXP�Á�RRU�ODPSV�IRU�HDFK�EHG�LQ�WKH�facility. These lamps provide light therapy as well as high-quality visual lighting for reading, crafts, visiting with family, and many other activities. The unique blend of lighting used in the new lamps enables residents to see crisp, clear colors. The lights not only enhance quality of life, but also help reduce fall risks in resident rooms.

Unrestricted gifts remain the backbone of supporting Phoebe’s mission and play a part in every project completed at Phoebe throughout the year. Unrestricted giving provides Phoebe with the opportunity to use the money where it is most needed and where it will have the greatest impact. Arlan’s desire to honor his mother’s memory and support the institution that

cared for her during the last decade of her life guided him to arrange monthly

gifts to Phoebe Ministries. That was 42 years ago and his monthly gifts continue

to this day! His mother, Ella Dohrenburg, lived at Phoebe Allentown and passed

away in 1980. While she lived at Phoebe, Arlan gained an understanding and

appreciation for Phoebe’s commitment to providing charitable care to residents

PHOEBE SERVICES PHARMACY:Phoebe Services Pharmacy is a teaching facility and rotation site for Doctor of Pharmacy Candidates from the following Universities:

PASTORAL CARE:Phoebe Ministries’ Pastoral Care program plays a major part in our benefi t to the community. This past year, ten students participated in the Clinical Pastoral Education Program from the following seminaries:

Pastoral Care at Phoebe is comprised of four full-time chaplains who are APC board certifi ed and two part-time chaplains. Many chaplains and community clergy volunteer their pastoral care efforts by assisting residents during Mass and Eucharistic ministry for Catholic residents and Shabbat services for Jewish residents. Volunteers are able to guide residents during worship, Bible study and other religious programming.

SHORT-TERM REHABILITATION:Phoebe serves as a teaching facility for rehabilitation for students from the following institutions:

PHOEBE AS AN EMPLOYER:Phoebe Ministries employed 1,169 individuals in FY 2011-12. Over the course of the fi scal year, we hired 354 employees. Human Resources staff attends job fairs and advertises open positions to the following colleges and universities:

HELPING THOSE IN THE COMMUNITY TO REMAIN INDEPENDENT:Phoebe At Home Services is a geriatric care management program dedicated to exploring new ways to provide care to older persons living at home. In-home services are based on the individual’s needs, interests and values. Since the launch of Phoebe At Home Services, the geriatric care management program has helped over 300 clients in the community stay independent longer.

Aside from offering in-home care, Phoebe At Home Services provides dementia education for both caregivers and professionals. This past year, these educational programs have served to:

Additionally, Phoebe At Home Services provided three free dementia education programs to the community. These three programs educated a total of 70 attendees. They also held a free Senior Expo at Phoebe Berks Village which was attended by over 100 local seniors.

PHOEBE INSTITUTE ON AGING:The Phoebe Institute on Aging provides forums for discussion and learning, including educational programs, cooperative ventures and outreach activities that promote improved quality of life and care for the aging and their families in the region. On November 3, 2011, the Phoebe Institute on Aging Benefi t raised over $50,000 to support this mission.

Funds raised supported a free community conference the following day. The free conference, “Passages in Caregiving: Turning Chaos into Confi dence” featured keynote speaker Gail Sheehy and was attended by over 300 caregivers, professionals, and students.

By developing and presenting outreach educational programs, the group tries to engage and inform the community in understanding and addressing these issues. Charitable Care: A 32% increase in FY 2011-2012

In FY 2010-11, Phoebe provided approximately $8.2 million in charitable

care to our residents. This past year, our charitable care levels rose to $10.8 million. This represents a one year increase of 32% in unreimbursed

medical care for our residents who have exhausted their own resources.

For not-for-profi t healthcare institutions like Phoebe, the reality of reduced

government reimbursements for care is a signifi cant negative fi nancial

impact. Downward trends in government reimbursement are not expected

to improve in the foreseeable future.

Phoebe remains committed to our residents and employs comprehensive

charitable care programming to allow residents to receive uncompromised

care even when they exhaust their funds. This is a clear demonstration of

Phoebe’s enduring legacy of care and compassion.

SENIOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING:Phoebe Ministries operates eight senior apartment communities in four counties for residents with low-to-moderate incomes. Our staff works with the Berks, Lehigh, Union and Northampton County Area Agencies on Aging to help residents obtain the services they need to enable them to age in place. Health and educational events, as well as social activities, are held throughout the year for residents.

TELEHEALTH PARTNERSHIP:Over the last fi scal year, Phoebe Ministries entered the forefront of revolutionary medical technology by offering virtual doctor’s visits to treat individuals living with Parkinson’s Disease. Partnering with Lehigh Valley Health Network, Phoebe’s TeleHealth program allows for residents to have virtual physician visits with Lehigh Valley Health Network Neurologists. Phoebe is one of only two skilled nursing facilities in the region to use this technology.

The use of TeleHealth for individuals living with Parkinson’s was recognized for its ingenuity and received the Innovation of the Year award from Leading Age PA in 2011. The award recognizes programs that contribute signifi cantly to the quality of life of the individuals served.

VOLUNTEERING:

Phoebe delivers the best services to assure that all needs are met with the help of well trained staff and dedicated volunteers. Phoebe works with a number of organizations that offer their members as valuable resources to assist those who live in Phoebe communities. We are grateful for our dedicated volunteers.
