KPMG WOMEN’S PGA CHAMPIONSHIP 2 | PGA MEDIA GUIDE 2015 HISTORY

The KPMG Women’s PGA Championship continues the rich tradition of the LPGA Championship as the second-longest running tournament in the history of the Ladies Professional Golf Association. It is one of five majors in women’s golf, which include the ANA Inspiration, KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, U.S. Women’s Open, Women’s British Open and The Evian Championship.

Past LPGA Champions include many of the greatest names in women’s golf: Mickey Wright, Betsy Rawls, Kathy Whitworth, Nancy Lopez, Annika Sorenstam, Se Ri Pak, Cristie Kerr and Defending Champion Inbee Park.

Beverly Hanson won the inaugural LPGA Championship in 1955 at Orchard Ridge Country Club in Fort Wayne, Indiana,

defeating Louise Suggs, 4 and 3, in the championship match. It was the only time the LPGA Championship ended in a match-play finale, although the first three rounds were stroke play.

The championship’s format was three rounds of stroke play, followed by match play on Sunday to determine the final standings. The championship match was conducted over 36 holes and all other matches 18 holes. Rain washed out play on Thursday and delayed the start to late morning on Friday; 36 holes were played on Saturday. For Hanson, it was the first of her three major championships. Suggs, who would go on to win 11 majors, captured her sole LPGA Championship in 1957 at Churchill Valley Country Club in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
