Fall factor and clearance

The all actor is the relationship between theheight o the all and the length o the rope orlanyard available or absorbing the energy o theall. It is calculated with the equation:

Clearance is the minimum distance required toprevent the user rom striking the ground in caseo a all. The energy absorber limits the impactorce on the user. With a signiicant impact, theuser risks serious injury i he has no absorber.The system extends in order to absorb theenergy o the all. This elongation must be takeninto account when calculating clearance.(Example o clearance calculation page 73).

Mastering the techniques

To optimize saety and eiciency in workat height, great precision and excellenttechnique are required. These skills shouldbe acquired through speciic training andregular practice appropriate or each stageo the operation. Petzl recommends using

a specialized training organization or alltraining activities. The examples on theollowing pages illustrate some o thepractices used in the vertical world.

Rope access

This progression technique is used when thereis no collective protection (railing, protectivenets, etc.) or when overhanging structures orworksites do not allow or mobile platorms, outdoorscaolding, etc. to be used.This is also the case or temporary operations whereit is not practical to set up collective protection.The work area is accessed with ropes by operatorsspecialized in rope access techniques. A site can beaccessed rom the top (saer and simpler to set up,this is the technique o choice), or rom below (orexample, a leader throws a rope up and around aixed point, and then climbs up the rope, or he usesmountaineering progression techniques). Once theleader has installed all the progression and saetyropes, the other workers can saely climb up theseropes.

Confined spaces

Work done in conined spaces carries speciicadditional diiculties related primarily to the lacko space and to the lack o means o autonomousprogression. Besides, the worker may face numerousadditional constraints: length o the intervention,air quality, temperature, etc. Since he cannot moveabout or ensure his own saety, someone workingin this type o environment must have assistance.Conined spaces are generally accessed rom the top.The workers saety is ensured by a reversible haulingsystem, which is independent and reliable, allowing a

General rescue principles




Hanging immobile in a harness, even or a short time, can cause seriousphysiological harm. In case o an accident, it is important to intervenequickly with the appropriate technique.

Self-rescue:On sites where the main access could be cut o by ire, people mustbe ready to evacuate the building quickly. They have evacuation kits.These kits are either portable or installed permanently on the structure.Where there is no identiied anchor possibility, these people can use ahook-based system. In both cases, teams are regularly trained so as notto panic in case o a ire.

On-site rescue:When a worksite is being set up, the company must establish a riskprevention plan (inventory o risk situations):1. It must protect the personnel rom alls rom height.The solutions, whether collective or individual, must protect the teammembers while they work.

2. In the case o an incident, the company must be prepared with rescuesystems or accessing, releasing and evacuating the victim. Thesesolutions are established with:- ready-to-use rescue kits, adaptable to many situations and simple touse- personal equipment or the worker at height (solution requiringexperienced and precisely trained teams)In both cases, the teams undergo regular training in order to be able tointervene rapidly in case o an accident.

Technical rescue:Technical rescue teams must be able to intervene rapidly in any situation.They must quickly assess the situation and know all the techniques orprogression and saety on a rope.- When access is diicult, these people must be able to intervene with

their own equipment. They have light, versatile equipment- When access is easier or possible by motorized means, they use morespeciic equipment

Ski lift evacuation:Operations evacuating ski lit users ollow an evacuation plan. Rescuekits are put together to respond exactly to the needs o each ski centre.

Access the victim

Accessing the victim can sometimes be complicated. Rope accesstechniques are used in such a case. When access is possible rom above,rescuers use rope descent techniques.I an access rope is in place, rescuers can ascend the rope using handledventral rope clamp techniques. In other situations, rescuers are obliged to

use climbing techniques to reach the victim.

Release the victim

HaulingThis involves using a mechanical advantage pulley system in order to easilyraise the victim. When the rescuer is alone, he will create such a system toconserve energy. The inconvenience is that a long rope is required. I thereare enough rescuers, a lower mechanical advantage is used to hasten the

operation.

Balancier techniqueThis is a counterweight system. The rescuer is on one side, the victim on theother. The rescuer unweights the rope on the victims side by pulling on it.The victim ascends and the rescuer descends. The advantage o this systemis that it is easy to do with little equipment. Engaging the counterweightis the step that demands the most energy. Ater that, it is important to becareful to keep the system under control. Be careful when there is a bigweight dierence between the rescuer and the victim.

Evacuate the victim

Downward, the evacuation is carried out with a descender. This is the easiesttechnique currently in use. When evacuation downward is impossible, thevictim is evacuated upward or horizontally.Upward, rescuers use either the counterweight or the hauling technique.Horizontally, several ropes are stretched taut. One rope is used or carriage,

another is used as a back-up belay, and another to move the litter.

EXO sel-evacuation

Following a tragic accident in 2004, the FireDepartment o New York (FDNY) wanted to equipeach ireighter with an individual system oprotection, allowing emergency sel-evacuation

rom a burning building. To do this, the FDNYconducted a very speciic study o their needs. Overorty technical solutions were proposed and morethan 5000 tests were carried out in their trainingcenters. During this study, the FDNY approachedPetzl to request the development o a device basedon the GRIGRI (descender/belayer) and to ine-tune anew emergency evacuation technique. The EXO wasthe result o this association o experts and is nowcarried by all o New Yorks ireighters. This systemallows each ireighter to quickly escape a burningbuilding, with a high level o saety.

EXO: personal escape system with anchorhook adapted or locations where thepossibility o inding an anchor point isuncertain. This solution applies particularlyto ireighter operations in a burning building(e.g. attachment to a window sill as a lastresort).
