ADPO expanded its existing infrastructure with a highly automated system for the storage and handling of chemicals and petrochemi-cals to better serve their customers.

Minimize product losses during the filling processIn one of their facilities, ADPO fills 200 liters drums at the rate of 100 drums per hour. To increase efficiency, the IND780 weighing indicator and 300kg high-pre-cision floor scales are in use. This drum filling solution from METTLER TOLEDO is highly accurate, ensures fast material transfer and allows tracking and tracing of each drum. ADPO benefited by mini-mizing handling time, decreasing the risk of errors and product losses, thus reducing process costs and maximizing productivity.

Typical customer’s requirements• Two semi-automatic filling and weigh-

ing stations for 200kg drums• Label printing• Pre-defined filling operation:

1. Drum is placed manually on the floor scale underneath the filling lance

2. Weighing indicator (IND780) auto-matically sends tare value to the PLC via analog output

3. On tare value input, PLC starts filling process by controlling the fast and slow feed valves

4. Upon reached target weight, PLC closes valves and sends a print re-quest for label printing with time & date & weight value

Made for very bad weather, too Mud, snow, water and lightning routinely cause damage to typical vehicle scale load cells (sensors). Many scale users discov-ered that a damaged sensor doesn’t just cause the scale to fail but to register in-correct weight. The error was only dis-cov-ered during an annual calibration or after a dissatisfied customer complained that they had been cheated – this is usually the result of the reduction of weight caused by a “missing” or non-functioning sensor...bad weather...

Optimized control of sour waterwith ISM pH electrode

Sour water damagescauses corrosionSour water is poisonous to petrochemical plants equipment, because it is respon-sible for most of any corrosion process in metallic pipes, heater, coolers and columns and it must be treated and neutralized.

An unsatisfying situationIn the past, our customer used a pH meas-uring system of a competitor to control the sour water and the neutralization treat-ment. The situation was not satisfying at all because of the contamination of the-electrode due to the presence of gasoline, which also passes through the pipe. As the pH electrodes were constantly damaged by the presence of gasoline in the measure-ment media, the customer stopped per- forming the on-line analysis and started conducting it in the laboratory.

The installation of a double measuring system – pH combined with

con-ductivity – allowed to control the aggressive sour water on-line

without damaging the pH electrodes.

The solution of METTLER TOLEDOAs a pH measurement is very important to control the chemical addition in order to neutralize the sour water, and to protect the pipe lines and equipment from corro-sion, METTLER TOLEDO suggested an in-novative solution which made it possible to carry out the online pH measurement.

The measurement system included a pH electrode and a conductivity sensor. Fol-lowing products were installed:■ InPro 4260iISM pH electrode■ InPro7250 inductive conductivity sensor■M700 transmitter■Retractable housing for the pH electrode

Conductivity verifiespH measurement The customer started using the conductiv-ity sensor with the pH electrode in order to protect this last one.

There are two moments in which the pH-electrode is retracted:■When it is washed and■When gasoline is passing through the pipe

pipe. Since water is salty, its conductivity is very high, whereas the gasoline conductiv-ity is very low. When the conductivity dras-tically decreases, it means that gasoline is passing through the pipe, and therefore the pH electrode must be retracted so it is not damaged.

The figure illustrates how the pH electrode is protected depending on the conductivity being measured.

Therefore, not only is the conductivity sen-sor used to verify phase separation, which is a classic application for conductivity sensor, but also this information is used to control the insertion and retraction of the sensor, protecting the sensor from con-tamination.

Reasons for product selectionInPro 4260iISMThe InPro 4260iISM electrode was found to be more suitable for this application due to the high concentration of sulfur. As the pH electrode has the ISM tech-nology, it is possible for the customer to do a much easier maintenance. ISM surpassed the customer’s expectations and it was something which differenti-ates METTLER TOLEDO’s sensors from other suppliers.

Retractable housingThe retractable housing was chosen due to the importance of the pH electrode automatic cleaning. The use of pneu-matic retractable housing allows the automation of cleaning.

M700 transmitterThe M700 was the choice to send both conductivity and pH signals to the same transmitter.
