They claim that the bush next to the open sandy field in Birkenhead Drive has been a major headache for residents, with criminals con- ducting various activities there. They are also constantly forced to clear sand from their homes. People’s Post previously reported on the field and the problems resi- dents experienced. (“Blown away by sand,” People’s Post 26 January 2010). Wendy Dennis, a resident and community worker in the area, says their problems began four years ago, when the bush on the field was cleared. “At the end of 2006, we as resi- dents, asked our councillor to clear the bush as it posed a safety risk to the community. This was not done, so a local football club brought in bulldozers to clear the space with the intention of using it to train. “The ground was cleared half- way, but was left as it was. Since then, residents living opposite have had a constant problem with sand in their homes,” says Dennis. She says the sand, which carries fleas, is very fine and creeps into every space. “The sand is damaging our prop- erty and equipment, creating hills in front of our doorsteps, some- times making it impossible to get to our front doors.” Dennis and other residents have lodged a claim against the city to re- pair the damage done to their prop- erties. Another resident, who asked not be named for fear of victimisation, tells People’s Post that he has sent numerous emails to his councillor and various departments in the City of Cape Town to have the bush cleared. “Criminals have made the bush their home, creating spaces where they do drugs and conduct other criminal activities. They break into homes in the area and use the bush as an escape route. “The bush needs to be cleared so that we can have a clear view. The area can be converted into a place that would be beneficial to the com- munity,” he says. He adds that he has pleaded with various officials to provide him with equipment, so that he and the community can clear the bush themselves. “Residents are suffering weekly break-ins. The police do go into the bush to find criminals but this is mostly in vain.” Previously, Irma Jackson, the ward councillor for the area, said she was aware of the sand problem, and was “working on a temporary solution”. She added that the site was cleared by the Bayview Football Club years ago with the intention of using it as a training facility. However, the site was earmarked for housing and not community fa- cilities, which is why we can’t spend money on it. At the time Jackson said she was working with the City’s Parks and Forest Department on laying down wood chips to stop the sand. She could not confirm when the chips will be placed on the field, or when houses will be built at the time. People’s Post contacted Jackson on the current sit- uation of the field. He said that funds had been se- cured to do the bush clear- ing in all areas. She could not say when the bush would be cleared. • Photos on page 2. Plans to reach common groundTAMMY PETERSEN

PROTESTERS vowed that thisweekend will be “round two” oftheir attempt to “occupy”Rondebosch Common – but thistime, they plan to follow the le-gal route.

Cosatu will host a protest at thecommon on Saturday from 10:00 to12:00 in support of the demandsmade by Communities for SocialChange, who attempted to “takeover” the space last Friday for aweekend-long summit focusing onhousing, unemployment, and theintegration of poorer communi-ties into the leafy suburbs.

No authorisation had been giv-en by the City for the summit orfor a march, which was supposedto take place from Athlone Stadi-um to this national monument(“Prepare for common takeover”,People’s Post, 24 January).

The organisation’s demands in-clude the development of housingon Rondebosch Common and golfcourses to help with the provincial

housing backlog. They also wantthe scrapping of council house ten-ants’ rent arrears.

People living in poorer areas –ranging from Manenberg to Stel-lenbosch – were threatened witharrest at their meeting points inAthlone and Manenberg, and it isbelieved that close to 1 000 protest-ers dispersed owing to a heavy po-lice presence.

While about 60 determined ac-tivists made it to the Common, 40were arrested under the illegalgatherings act, including conven-or Mario Wanza.

But Cosatu organiser MikeLouw says an application for per-mission to assemble at the com-mon has been made to avoid a re-peat of the debacle which unfoldedat the national monument on Fri-day. The City of Cape Town con-firms that the request has been re-ceived, and that a meeting be-tween the organiser and thecouncil will take place tomorrow.

The trade union slammed localgovernment’s reaction to themarch, asking how “a hundred

people protesting peacefully couldthreaten the civil order of a citywith millions of inhabitants”.

Organisations within Ronde-bosch have also been invited to at-tend the protest.

Wanza, who is also affiliated toCosatu, says the participating or-ganisations will “not back down”in its crusade towards “equalitywithin this apartheid-style resist-ance”.

He appeared in the AthloneMagistrate’s Court yesterday(Monday) and was released onR500 bail, on condition that hedoes not take part in any other ille-gal protests. “It will take muchmore than this to get us to changecourse. This was a peaceful dem-onstrationdisrespectedbyauthor-ities who used pre-1994-style tac-tics. We will not throw in the towel– we are not scared of this adminis-tration.”

On Friday, hundreds of protest-ers were barred from reaching thecommon, as police monitored theroutes and threatened partici-pants with arrest as they walked

and gathered at the designatedmeeting points.

Various protesters told People’sPost that people are “too scared”of a face-off with the police, andopted to rather “back down” in theface of law enforcement.

When People’s Post visited thecommon hours before the protest, locals said they believed the MetroPolice would “manage to keepthose hooligans out”.

“They are going about thingsthe wrong way,” a woman, whoasked tobeknownonlyasPat, saidindignantly. “There are processeswhich need to be followed by theorganisers. They should be facedwith the full wrath of the law. Thisis a dignified area and such behav-iour should not be tolerated.”

John Richardson nodded inagreement. “I understand thatthey are living in absolutelydreadful conditions but what theyare doing is simply not justified. They have to respect the commonas a natural habitat and recrea-tional area. This isn’t a piece ofveld where they can just do what

they like.”But protesters were determined

to continue with the march, andweren’t prepared to back downwithout a fight. “These white peo-ple will never understand what wego through every day,” DesmondTitus said angrily. “They live intheir cushy houses while we aremoved to overpopulated areas likeDelft and Blikkiesdorp. Why?There is enough space on that stu-pid common to house 500 fami-lies!”

Marita Salie said that despite se-vere arthritis, she would walk allthe way to the Common “so thatthis council can see how seriousthis is”. “I want to invite any oneof these fancy people who don’twant us here to come and spend aday in my hokkie. I am poor, andI am doing what I can as a citizenof this city to make my voiceheard. I will support any future ac-tion, so if they want to arrest me,they must just try it. Ek is reg virhulle, want net soos ek in die apart-heid jare gestruggle het, sal ek nouook al aan struggle.”

Night market a hit over festive seasonMELISSA PAPIER

SUBCOUNCIL 12 started on a positivenote as councillors were given positivefeedback on the annual Mitchell’s Plainfestival which was a huge success.

The first meeting of the New Year tookplace last Thursday in the Beacon ValleyCommunity Centre.

David Cedras, the subcouncil 12 manager, did a presentation to councillors highlightingthe success of the festive events hosted by

subcouncil 12.The festival was started in 2006 drawing

crowds in excess of 20 000. The night marketaveraged 5 000 people per night. The nightmarket kicked off in AZ Berman Drive withthe switching on of lights by the mayor.

Cedras says, “The purpose of the event isto enhance the festive spirit of the Mitchell’sPlain community where families and friendscome together to celebrate a message of good-will. It also acts as a catalyst for local entre-preneurs to develop. The event unlocks thetourism potential of Mitchell’s Plain and cre-

ates opportunities for local artists.”Cedras added that the event had several

positive aspects, but that a lack of fundingand resources limited its scope.

“Last year there was an average of 150 stallscomprising food and non-food stalls, employ-ing 270 people from Mitchell’s Plain. A totalof 80 local artists entertained the crowd. Theturnover for the event was over R200 000 forthe three days, whereas previous years it wasover R1,2 million. Stallholders recorded aprofit of between R2 000 and R5 000 eachnight. The event was well attended by resi-

dents from all over Mitchell’s Plain and sur-rounds. Itwas incident free,whichwasaposi-tive for the subcouncil,” he says.

He thanked the staff and other key roleplay-ers for their unselfish support in arrangingthe event without taking time off or beingpaid overtime.

“Due to our success, other subcouncilshave contacted me asking for assistance tohelp with festivals in their areas – these areasinclude Grassy Park and Bellville.”

After the presentation, councillors had anopportunity to ask questions. CouncillorAchmat Williams thanked Cedras and histeam for their efforts, adding that he hopesthat the “initiative will continue in years tocome and not fade away”.

Feedback on other matters outstanding:. Realignment of Baden Powell Drive: Ce-

dras informedcouncillors thatmeetingshavetaken place between the Urban RenewelProject (URP) and the Roads and Transportdepartment. R74 million is needed for theproject and a further R174 000 is to be sourcedfrom other departments. The process is ongo-ing.

. Rezoning of Sportsfields for mixed use:At an activity day held in November it wasvetted that the Facility Management Com-mittees (FMCs) meet and pave the way for therezoning of parts of sports fields. It was sug-gested that one FMC be identified to launcha pilot project.

The next meeting is set to take place on 23February at the Portlands Community Cen-tre, situated off Silversands Avenue from10:00.

Can you lace up for cancer?LILLIAN AMOS

JUST how crazy can you be for can-cer? This is the theme for this year’sfirst annual “Lace-up for Cancer”

walk.

The Hospice Palliative Care Associationhopes to get Capetonians pounding the tar attheir “Lace-up for Cancer” event on Saturday4 February.

The event will include a 10km run and a5km walk at Rondebosch Common in supportof World Cancer Day.

There are more than 20 different types ofcancer, all symbolized by a different colour. For instance, pink for breast cancer andwhite for lung cancer. But the HPCA willhand out lavender-coloured shoelaces to thefirst 250 people who register for the event aslavender is the colour that represents alltypes of cancer.

The Hospice Palliative Care Associationwas founded in 1987 and serves as a member-ship organization for hospices around thecountry.

Palliative care is aimed at improving thequality of life of those with life-threateningillnesses and their families bypreventingandproviding relief from suffering through theearly identification and assessment andtreatment of pain and other related physical, spiritual and psychosocial problems.

Some of the focus areas include helping pa-

tients live as actively as possible, pain andsymptom control, providing equipment likewheelchairs and emotional and bereavementsupport.

Douglas Jeftha from Zeekovlei says he andhis family have received help from the Kenil-worth Hospice since his diagnoses of prostatecancer in 2010.

“The service we got and still get from theorganisation is amazing; they have been ex-tremely helpful.”

“They came to my house almost every daybefore I went to the hospice to help me andwhen I was at the hospice they always madesure I was helped and tried to make me feelat home.”

Asked what advice he would give to peoplewho are suffering from any life threateningdisease, he says: “Please seek help from thesehospices. They are there to help you.

“Many people are afraid to go to a hospicebecause they have the perception that they’lljust die there, but it’s not true.”

Eric Watlington, advocacy officer for theorganisation, says palliative care is availableto any person with a life-limiting conditionlike Cancer or Aids, but the patient must con-sent to joining a hospice programme.

“Anyone can refer a patient to a hospice, after which nurses do an assessment to deter-mine if the person needs palliative care.

“Once the person is accepted into a hospiceprogramme, a care plan is devised to meet theperson’s needs.”

Watlington says the organisation believesthat palliative care is a human right for allwho need it; therefore there are no costs in-volved. However, patients or their familiescan make a donation to their local hospice ifthey’re able to. According to the association’swebsite, some hospices can also processclaims to medical aids.

For more information you can go to thewebsite at www.hpca.co.za

Renew yourfirearm licenceTHE South African Police Service in theWestern Cape would like to remind li-censed firearm owners that during 2012many licenses issued in terms of theFirearm Controls Act (Act 60 of 2000)will expire, and needs to be renewed.

This process is not automatic, and a licen-see will have to submit an application 90days prior to the expiry date at his or herlocal police station in terms of the men-tioned legislation.

Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut, provin-cial police spokesperson, encourages allfirearm owners to make an enquiry at theirpolice station where an application was sub-mitted, for “issued licenses, as these licens-es are often left uncollected for manymonths”.

“The ownership of a firearm is not onlygoverned by legislation, but is also a hugeresponsibility and we therefore appeal tofirearm owners to take the necessary carein this regard,” he says.

Your SMSesFinding common ground

. Your headline “Prepare forcommon takeover” refers. Wanzaclaims that “we don’t have space tomove”; this is not caused by peopleliving in affluent areas. It is causedby the irresponsible use of the pe-nis. Twenty kids per person is acrime against humanity. Leaveour public open spaces alone. Whynot have your protest at AthloneStadium?

. I support the takeover ofRondebosch Common for develop-ment, job creation and housing forthe poor.

. I believe the poor have theright to stand up and to say “nomore will we be treated as if wedon’t contribute to this country ofours”. We have right to housing asmost of us work and pay taxi farebut the money is not enough to ap-ply for a bond at the bank. Thewealth in this country is being dis-tributed unfairly whereby certainminorities that have money canhave a say in the country but thepoor have none.

. There are other more civilisedways and alternative venues thatcan be used to get freebies fromgovernment! I hope the residentsnakes on Rondebosch Common

bite a few protesters!. Once again, an eco-friendly

piece of ground is under threat bycommunities who continue tobreed even when they can’t feedtheir families. The more the poor-er sector insist on increasing theirfamilies, the less housing therewill be for them. Birth control edu-cation or enforcement of one childper family needs to happen first be-fore the entitlement of taking overof common ground. Get things inperspective.

. No to losing one of the lastgreen lungs in the city to squattersand badly built ANC shacks.

. The invasion of land at theRondebosch Common must be ajoke. Those poor communities arecriminally intent. Crime will dou-ble and the tikkoppe will causemayhem in the leafy suburbs. Letthem rot on the Cape Flats.

. The rich work hard to earntheir wealth, they don’t peddledrugs and behave like hooligans orsteal what doesn’t belong to them. They pay a lot of money to live inprivileged areas! You can’t getthings for nothing! You can’t ex-pect to come and live in privilegedareas with your thieving ways anduncouth behaviour! Work hard, educate yourself, behave yourselfand don’t do drugs and eventuallyyou can own your own land!

Local thoughts. Service delivery and the quali-

ty of goods in the southern suburbsis appalling in comparison to thenorthern suburbs! Everythingfrom garbage disposal to retailworkers and even the corner bak-ery are not up to standard. Busi-nesses in Mitchell’s Plain must im-prove service delivery. There areno longer white or coloured areasso service quality should not dif-fer.

. Would any taxi owners be sokind as to start a route from Mitch-ell’s Plain to N1 City Mall? Trustme, you will make money becausetaking the bus is not nice.

. If there are any organisationsin Mitchell’s Plain doing homecare can their numbers please bepublished in this paper as I am alsodesperately looking for someone tohelp my husband, who had astroke.

In response. The entertainment at the Mar-

di Gras is always good. However, since the revival of the event thestalls resemble a fleamarket. If Ineed AMC Classic pots I can getthem at a supermarket; if I need sa-moosas I can get them at Wembly. The concept of the Mardi Gras hasbeen lost. If it has not changed thisyear, it will be our last visit. Steve

Mankind is prone to lawlessness

Think about what you say

I WOULD like to comment on whatJason Bosh wrote (Peoples Post, 24January). It is easy to quote versesfrom the Q’uran or any other re-vealed scripture out of context.

There was sometimes violent op-position to the message of theprophets who came before Muham-mad. Similarly, in the time of Mu-hammad, the idolaters and paganswaged war against him and he wasgiven permission to fight back, andthat is the reason for those versesthat were revealed to him. Thus themonotheistic belief of the Prophets

were established through the helpof God against massive opposition.

It is worthy to note that the twoworld wars that killed millions hadnothing to do with religion but theimmorality of mankind them-selves.

The revelations that were sentdown were essentially to correctimmorality and establish order formankind is prone to lawlessnessand corruption. Isn’t that evident inthe world today?SHAFIQ JACOBSSalt River

THIS is in response to the letter“The ignoranceof religion”People’sPost, Tuesday 24 January.

When Adam was created, therewas already religion. Afterwards, people began to go more and moreastray, so religion was lost andthere was a time of complete chaos. Can you imagine how you wouldhave lived if you were not a Romanduring the Roman empire?

That is just but one example of anera.Total disregard for lawsandhu-manity, with some people treated

worse than criminals. Baby girlswere killed because families want-ed male babies to carry on their lin-eage.

Then religion returned, remind-ing people of the equality that eve-ryone shared, restoring humanity. When you quote verses from theQ’uran, don’t only extract what youwant to, follow up on what is saidbefore and after as well. This wouldmake the verses much clearer.ISMAIL ISAACSCape Town

LIAM MOSES

THE football fraternity and sports fansall around the country were stunned bythe news that yet another talented, young athlete has been killed.

Jeffrey Ntuka, a former Bafana Bafanadefender, was stabbed to death near hisgirlfriend’s house in Kroonstad in the FreeState on Saturday 21 January, after report-edly asking someone for a match. He was26.

The defender was once considered to besuch a bright prospect that he was signedby English football powerhouse Chelsea in2003, but his progress was hampered by al-cohol abuse and indiscipline.

Unfortunately, his story is not an uncom-mon one in local football – where playersoften seem to rise from obscurity to star-dom, and from poverty to relative wealth, overnight. And then plummet back down toearth even faster.

Jabu Pule and Mbulelo Mabizela are per-haps two of the most famous examples ofextremely talented footballers who went off

the rails after struggling to deal with theirnew-found fame and wealth, but there aremany others.

Despite the high prevalence of this prob-lem, the South African Football Associa-tion, the Premier Soccer League and theclubs which employ players are yet to comeup with a successful way to prevent it.

Footballers need to be taught the neces-sary life skills to stop themselves from fall-ing prey to drugs, alcohol and excessivelifestyles, and a support system for playersalso needs to be developed.

Together, the stakeholders need to en-sure that players are taught, from a youngage, how to stay in control off the pitch, aswell as on it. The sad reality in South Africais that not all citizens are taught this athome or at school.

ThePSLand the clubs in it benefit greatlyfrom the talents of these players, and al-though they pay their salaries, they owe itto the players and supporters to make surethey lead healthy lives. It also makes sensefrom a business perspective.

Professionals clubs have been guilty ofabandoning troubled players too quickly inthe past.

Although it’s understandable that a com-pany which exists to make as much profitas possible, and employs players to help

them achieve this, would not want to carryon paying a player if he is not performing,it is not acceptable that a club can abandona player without helping him find the helphe needs.

Football authorities must do more

SERIOUS divisions emerged in the ranks ofthe South African Baseball Associationduring the organization’s aborted annualgeneral meeting, which took place at CapeTown International Airport at the week-end.

The election of a new president was puton ice after it emerged that Mark Alexan-der, the incumbent president, could nothave his way in naming Greg Lenders, thecurrent president of Western Provincebaseball, as his successor.

Alexander, who is also the current presi-dent of SA Rugby, indicated last year thathe would vacate the position, but it now ap-pears that he will hold on to the post untilhe has his way.

Edwin Bennett, CEO of SA Baseball, con-firmed that the elections have been post-poned.

“We need to workshop the proposed newstructure to meet the requirements of thechallenges we are facing in the future,” saidBennett. “It was with this in mind that wepostponed the meeting. The election willthen take place and the regions are wel-come to nominate their own candidates.”

The election of office bearers has nowbeen postponed until 31 March, but this didnot go down well with some delegates.

Adelegatewhodidnotwhich tobenamed“for strategic reasons” said the timing, ven-ue and funding for delegates to attend themeeting was questionable.

He said it would have been more viableto have held the meeting in Gauteng, wherethe majority of regions are situated. Somedelegates are understood to have traveledlong hours by bus and car to attend.

Several delegates from the association’s15 regions support the nomination of JohnOliver, head of South Africa Schools Base-ball, to take over from Alexander.

This appears to have been the hiccup thatprompted Alexander to ask for a postpone-ment until the new structure has beenworkshopped.

Oliver confirmed that he wasprepared to take over the president’s posi-tion if elected. “Yes, I was prepared to takeover from Alexander. This was only be-cause the president (Alexander) said hewas stepping down,” said Oliver.

“I will now, however, reconsider this po-sition when the AGM is reconvened.”

Some delegates said the meetingwas a “waste of time, money and resourc-es”.

Non-racialsport in theWestern CapeMARK WARD

THE state of non-racialism and developmentin Western Cape sport will be the subject ofan independently hosted symposium.

Cheryl Roberts, a respected sports activistwho in recent yearshas actively campaignedfor female participation in sport, will hostthe event in conjunction with the Sport andRecreation Council of the City of Cape Town.

The former table tennis star, who partici-pated at the 1992 Olympic Games in Athens, said the reason for thehostingof the seminaris the slow pace of transformation in SouthAfrican sport.

“This is a platform to engage in dialogueand conversation about our guiding princi-ple, non-racialism in sport,” said Roberts.

“It will focus on, and try to thrash out, what we should know and implement whenwe talk about development and developingsport.”

The event will take place on Saturday 4January from 09:00 at the Athlone Stadium.

According to Roberts, the symposium isindependently hosted.

It is open to all, especially officials and ad-ministrators at provincial level, leaders ofsports councils, district associations, cluband community sports structures, coachesand selectors, tertiary education sports offi-cials and government officials.

“We need many minds to be exposed tonon-racialism in sport.

Twenty years after sports unification, fol-lowing decades of anti-apartheid sport strug-gle, we have been catapulted into an era ofmoney and professional sport, with class, colour and gender imbalances,” said Rob-erts.

“Development is vital for every sport ifthey are to survive into the future, but par-ticipation has, over this period, dwindled.

“I don’t think the emphasis should be onelite participation but on building the foun-dation of sport, in conjunction with localgovernment and sports federations.

By implementing development pro-grammes, we must work from a non-racialperspective.”

Additionally, all delegates attending thesymposium will receive a copy of Roberts’book titled “No Normal Sport In An Abnor-mal Society.

Struggle For Non-Racial Sport in SouthAfrica: From Apartheid To Sports Unity”

For more information call Roberts direct-ly on 082 691 8547.

Hellenic namereturns to cityLIAM MOSES

FORMER Premier SoccerLeague team Hellenic havereformed almost eight

years after closing down whentheir Premier League franchisewas sold to Benoni Premier Unit-ed.

The team, which is now based inMilnerton, started training in No-vember last year andwill field threeteams in the Super League of theCape Town Tygerberg Football As-sociation.

According to Grant Veitch, oper-ations manager at Hellenic, theclub was restarted after he andMark Byrne, former Hellenic play-er and coach, and the current direc-tor of football, approached the Haji-dakis family to purchase the nam-ing rights.

The Hellenic name was then su-perimposed on to Blouberg CityFootball Club, and a large contin-gent of staff set up shopat the team’sTygerhof base.

Veitch says developing CapeTown’s abundant football talentwill be the main aim of the team forthe immediate future.

“We think there is something

missing in Cape Town football atthe moment. There are certainclubs and academies around thatsay they are the benchmark foryouth development,” said Veitch.“We believe that the benchmarkshould at another level, which wethink we can offer.” The club willfunction primarily as a footballacademy, hoping to develop playersthat they can sell on to professionalsides for a profit, and Veitch hopesthat the Hellenic name will help toattract these talented youngsters toMilnerton.

Veitch, whose father played atleft back for the team, said that heand Byrne also hope to rebuild theHellenic brand to its former glory.

“The name will attract a lot of at-tention and we then have to live upto that expectation. It’s very impor-tant that this name is looked after,to the best of our ability,” saidVeitch.

“And our aspirations are to getHellenic to where it was all thoseyears ago, up into the PSL. It’s avery long term project, but at thesame time it’s something that weare doing as a 10-15 year pro-gramme.”

Hellenic have three coaches foreach one of the three teams current-

ly at the club, as well as a dedicatedgoalkeeping coach and a biokineti-cist. The size of the coaching staffis much larger than most teams ofHellenic’s size, but it is the qualityof the individuals which is evenmore surprising.

Byrne himself is the former headof development at Udinese, whilerespective U17and U13 coaches Ne-ven Payne and Cecil Ntlebi held the

same positions at the original teambefore it closed down.

Veitch said that three of thecoaching staff are Union of Europe-an Football Association (UEFA) ac-credited and one has the highestlevel of South African Football As-sociation (SAFA) coaching certifi-cate. According to Byrne, the highnumber of staff members will helpthe club to develop the players tech-

nically, mentally and physically.“We have said that our pro-

gramme is to develop the individualholistically,” said Byrne

“I have played overseas, I havecoached overseas, I know the levelsthat are required, and it’s hard. Wehave too many players who go over-seas and then within a year or ayear-and-a-half, they come backagain because they can’t survive.”
