Gang murder capital of SALAILA MAJIET

@laila_newsie

Gangmurders are on the rise inMitchell’s Plain. The Cape Flats township

has been dubbed the gang murdercapital of the country, having re-corded the highest number of gangkillings during the last recordedperiod. This is according to the annual

crime statistics released earlierthis month.Police management are now

looking at ways of reducing thenumber of gang murders, but in-sist they cannot turn the tide with-out the help of the community.New top cop Major-General Ab-

raham Gregory Goss says the fig-ures are of grave concern.Provincial police commissioner

Arno Lamoer says 8% of murdersin the province are gang-related.This tally includes children

killed in the crossfire and whengangsters kill one another.Nyanga and Mitchell’s Plain are

among the areas with the highestmurder rates.“We will have to increase the

number of firearms recovered tostop the bloodshed and ensure sus-pects are convicted,” Goss main-tains.A well-known alleged drug king-

pin was gunned down in Tafelsiglast Monday night. The Lentegeur man, known only

as “Vet”, was shot dead on an openfield in Hangklip Street.

Residents say it is only a matterof time beforemore bullets fly afterthe 46-year-old man, believed to bea leading member of the Ameri-cans gang, was shot dead and twoother people wounded.A 29-year-old suspect was arrest-

ed in connection with the shootingshortly after the incident. Police al-so confiscated a 9mm Norinco pis-tol with the serial number filed off.As the sun set last Monday, doz-

ens of people gathered in the

streets to watch the drama unfold.Police quickly cordoned off the

scene and scoured the area for evi-dence.Volunteer crime fighters assist-

ed with crowd control. The vicinity near Hangklip

Street was tense following theshooting.Goss says: “We cannot continu-

ously pick up bodies and recoverfirearms. We need to get to a pointwhere we can sit safely in our

homes without worrying about be-ing hit by stray bullets.”A Tafelsig resident, speaking to

People’s Post on condition of ano-nymity for fear of her safety, saysshe was on her way to a shop whenthe shots rang out.“I hurried home as quickly as I

could and cameout after police cor-doned off the scene,” she says.“These gangsters and drug deal-

ers are in theminority and we can-not allow them to rule our commu-

nities.”Another Tafelsig resident says

Vet was a ruler of the undergroundworld. “Before it cost R40 000 to ar-range a hit on someone’s life. To-day, these gang leaders pay young-sters R1 000 to do the job. Becauseso many children roam the streetsand are not in school, this is the lifethey get lured into,” she says.Meanwhile, a known gangster

was shot dead in Lentegeur twoweeks ago.The man, known only as “Wor-

sie”, was gunned down near therailway line in a gang-related inci-dent on Monday 15 September. The unfenced railway line has

for long been a bone of contention,as rival gangs shoot across thetracks and young children use it asa shortcut to get to school.Rival gangs, the Scoombizos and

Naughty Boys, are behind the re-cent incident, officials confirmed. The number of murders in

Mitchell’s Plain has risen from 91to 158 in the last financial year.Mitchell’s Plain Police Station

also recorded the highest numberof attempted gang murders in theprovince during the 2013/14 peri-od.However, more people are mur-

dered in Nyanga than inMitchell’sPlain.Mitchell’s Plain remains the

highest contributor to crime in thecountry. The local police station also serv-

ices the biggest population groupout of all stations nationwide.

CRIME SCENE: Retaliation shootings are expected to rock Tafelsig, residents say. This comes after an alleged seniormember of the Americans gang was gunned down in the area last Monday. PHOTO: LAILA MAJIET

LIQUOR LICENCES

Cops ‘don’t inspect outlets’LAILA MAJIET

@laila_newsie

Council has called for an investigation in-to the actions of a police officer in chargeof liquor licence applications.

This comesafter itwas revealedat subcoun-cil that applications for the extension of trad-ing hours are being supported by the Desig-nated Liquor Officer (DLO) on the basis of“false information” provided.Comment submitted to subcouncil for con-

sideration indicates a number of liquor out-lets are not in close proximity to the establish-ments outlined. However, this is not the caseThese applications have since been denied.Subcouncil chairperson Eddie Andrews

says many of the outlets are in fact in closeproximity to mosques, churches, schools anddrug rehabilitation facilities. An application for the extension of trading

hours on weekdays and weekends was sub-mitted by several Westridge liquor traders, including a store in Smid, Avocado and Fries-land streets. The granting of the applications in question

will have a negative impact on the communi-ty, subcouncil officials believe.“Approval of the applications prejudices

the residents of the area, residents of an insti-tution for the aged or frail, pupils of an educa-tional institution under the age of 18, the pa-tients of a rehab facility as well as the congre-gation of a place of worship located in thevicinity of the proposed licensed premises,”Andrews points out. “We cannot object onmoral grounds, but rather on the basis of thebylaw which we have done.”

Proportional representative councillorAchmat Williams says it is “largely problem-atic” when an officer of the law provides falseinformation for consideration at subcouncil.“Some officer says there are no churches,

mosques or schools nearby when there are,”he stresses. “The report from the police istherefore incorrect and the officer needs to beinvestigated.”Andrews has committed to engagingMitch-

ell’s Plain Police Station management to ad-dress the matter. “I will engage the stationcommander in a bid to get to the bottom ofthis.”Police failed to respond to questions about

why details of places of worship, schools, frailcare centres aswell as rehabilitation cen-tres were omitted on submissions from theDLO.Mitchell’s Plain police spokesperson Ser-

geant Jerome Voegt says no complaints werereceived about the Westridge liquor outlets, prompting the designated officer to supportthe application.“Act 4 of 2008, clearly stipulates that a li-

cence holder has the right to apply for an ex-tension of liquor trading hours. The proximi-ty of a liquor store must not disturb or inter-fere with the day to day operations of a placeof worship or school. On a daily basis opera-tions are conducted by the officer to verifycompliance with the Act,” Voegt explains.Residents are urged to report non-compli-

ant liquor stores to the authorities for actionto be taken. The Liquor Bylaw grants a basket of rights

to the applicants, Andrews adds. “We need tofamiliarise ourselves with the bylaw so wecan apply our minds accordingly.”

PROOF: Several applications for the extension of trading hours at licensed liquor outletshave been denied at subcouncil. This comes in the wake of “false information” being provided by the local Designated Liquor Officer in support of the applications. This photo is anillustration. PHOTO: LAILA MAJIET

SPCA

Guide for slaughterWith the annual Islamic celebration ofEid-ul-adha (Eid of Sacrifice) daysaway, guidelines forhumane slaugh-

tering have been issued. This is according to a statement by the

Cape of Good Hope SPCA, which also saysthe celebration takes place between Friday3 and Monday 6 October. The SPCA is calling on those planning to

slaughter sheep or cattle to follow theseguidelines to ensure the animals do not suf-fer unnecessarily.According to the Animals Protection Act

(No.71 of 1962):. All animals must be confined in such a

manner that allows them adequate space,ventilation, shelter, food and water;

. No animal should be picked up by itsfleece, dragged, chased or prodded;

. Animals should be restrained humane-ly while being transported and when being

slaughtered;. Noanimal should be tied by its legswith

bailing twine and crammed into the back ofcar boots or laid on their sides on the backof bakkies;

. When due to be slaughtered, animalsshould be laid on their sides and not on theirbacks to avoid distress. Animals should alsonot be forced to stand or kneel duringslaughter;

. Knives used for the slaughter must alsoremain extremely sharp so that the slaugh-tering remains as humane as possible;

. Only experienced people should per-form the slaughtering. Inexperienced lay

persons who attempt to perform the slaugh-ters often cause horrific trauma and pain tothe animal. The SPCA advises individuals who are in-

experienced, but want to participate in Qur-bani, to contact the SPCA inspectorate on(021) 700 4158/59 or after hours on083 326 1604 for referral to such establish-ments.Anyone who wishes to perform Qurbani

at their residential premises are urged to en-sure that animals are slaughtered humanelyby an experienced person and must obtainpermission from their local City of CapeTown environmental health office. The

SPCA strongly discourages the slaughter ofcattle in places without adequate infrastruc-ture to adequately restrain the animals pri-or to slaughter. The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC), the

Halaal Trust and local farm owners haveonce again collectively committed to ensureEid-ul-adha is held not only in accordancewith theMuslim religion and culture, but al-so in accordance with the law.Moyo Ndukwana, SPCA inspectorate

manager, says: “Wewould like to extend ourgratitude to the MJC and farm owners fortheir willingness to work together to ensurethat all animals are treated with respect andcompassion during this time.”SPCA inspectors will be stationed at Qur-

bani farms to ensure animals are sacrificedhumanely and will encourage and offer topre- or post-stun animals to facilitate this. They will also monitor proceedings.

@laila_newsie

Council has come under fire for the “un-fair allocation” of resources.LawEnforcement officers have been

stationed at the temporaryMyCiTi bus sta-tion in Town Centre since the inception ofthe service in Mitchell’s Plain on Saturday5 July. But residents insist the officers are need-

ed elsewhere to serve and protect the mass-es.However, council maintains it is not

within the ambit of Law Enforcement totackle serious crimes, including gangster-ism and drug dealing.Resident Edward Johnson (25) questions

why when there have been no perceivedthreats against the new mode of transport, has council invested such security meas-ures.“There have never been any real threats

against the MyCiTi bus infrastructure, soI cannot understandwhy static deploymentof council officers is necessary.”On some occasions, up to three Law En-

forcement vehicles with two officers ineach car have been stationed at the tempo-rary MyCiTi bus stop at the Town Centretransport interchange.Brett Herron, Mayoral Committee mem-

ber for Transport, says Law Enforcementofficers rotate among allMyCiTi bus routesand stations to assist with passenger safetyand the detection of fare evasion, as well asto ensure that theMyCiTi rules are upheld. However, community leaders in other ar-

eas where the service is in operation rub-

bish these claimsand sayLawEnforcementhas never been statically deployed at sta-tions in other areas as is the case in Mitch-ell’s Plain. But, Herron claims this is untrue.“Law Enforcement officers are deployed

in all areas that are served by the MyCiTiservice and at stations and stops as andwhen required.”Mitchell’s Plain police’s Colonel Andre

Louw questioned why Law Enforcementand Metro Police were stationed at the My-CiTi bus station when there is a desperateneed for static deployment at the tradingprecinct (“Turnaround planned for TownCentre”, People’s Post, 7 August).“We all need to be protected and need a

fair share of council’s cake,” hepointed out.Town Centre shopper Mary Louw (67)

says council has little regard for its constit-uency.“This type of resource allocation is un-

fair, especially since traders have for solong been crying for security to be beefedup at the Town Centre,” she maintains.“It seems council do as they please with

little regard for residents.”Shopper Timothy Jantjies (49) reiterates

this.“Officers need to be deployed to the Town

Centre. A series of business robberies anddrug dealing in broad daylight is turningthe place into a hive of criminal activity,”he says.“Councilmust not just look after their as-

sets, but also their residents.”V Have you seen Law Enforcement officers deployedat other MyCiTi stations? Share your thoughts. SMSto 32516. SMSes cost R1.

TRAFFIC SAFETY

More roaddeaths over payday weekendsTwelve people die on average every pay dayweekend on the province’s roads alone.

This is according to Donald Grant, pro-vincial minister of transport and publicworks.

Analyses of this year’s fatalities data in-dicates that road deaths on pay day week-ends spike by as much as 23.6% comparedto other weekends.

“While, on average, 3.6 people are killedevery day onWestern Cape roads, this risesto an average of 6.2 people per day over payday weekends,” he says.

Last month was the worst weekend re-corded this year, with 26 fatalities over theweekend of 1August. The following pay dayweekend, which started on 29 August, sawa further 20 people killed, Grant confirms.

He advises motorists, pedestrians androad users to not become another statisticby taking the necessary precautions.

“Do not mix alcohol and road use,” Grantwarns.

“Driving or walking on the roads whileintoxicated is a quickway to an early grave.Use public transport if you intend drinkingalcohol.”

If you are travelling in a vehicle, alwayswear your seatbelt and never exceed thespeed limit, he continues.

“Exercise extreme caution while drivingon Fridays from 18:00 until midnight, onSaturdays from 06:00 until 10:00, on Satur-days from 18:00 until 04:00 and on Sundaysfrom 15:00 until 21:00.”

Greater mobility and increased access toalcohol are reflected in spikes in the deathrate over pay day weekends, Grant adds.

“While further data analysis is requiredto isolate all of the factors involved, the pub-lic is warned to please exercise extra cau-tion over this time.”

PUBLIC EVENTS

Locals meet new top copLAILA MAJIET

@laila_newsie

Active citizenship is set to drive for-ward a plan of action to fight crime inMitchell’s Plain.

This emerged at a series of public meet-ings hosted by the local police authorities. With a new top cop in charge, residents

are invited to come on board and assist inthe battle against crimeand grimeplaguingthe Cape Flats suburb.New cluster commander Major-General

AbrahamGregory Goss says as the top con-tributor to crime in the country, somethingis amiss in Mitchell’s Plain.“At a recent crime scene, I had the oppor-

tunity to engage with a resident. She wassobbing and asked when the bloodshedwould stop,” he recalls. “I told her it wouldstopwhenparents take responsibility. Chil-dren involved in crime do not fall from themoon. They are our children.”We can never divorce ourselves from our

responsibility, he stresses and calls on thepublic to remember that “corruption hastwo legs”. “It is the corrupt and corruptee. We cannot be proud of our scoreboard,” hesays in reference to the recently releasedcrime statistics. “A serious mobilisationcampaign is needed. We can make an im-pact and make Mitchell’s Plain, Strandfon-tein and Lentegeur safer.”At recent imbizos in these policing pre-

cincts, residents were given the opportuni-

ty to raise concerns and offer solutions.Poor response times, lack of police visi-

bility and non-response from officials weretabled as priority concerns from residents.A man known only as Lungile says a po-

lice caravan is needed in Mandalay. The volunteer crime fighter sayswith on-

ly one patrol van for Mandalay andMontclair, criminals have the perfect op-portunity to strike.“When the patrol van is inMandalay, the

young boys rob homes in Montclair. Addi-tional resources must be deployed,” he in-sists. “I have sent through suggestions, butnever receive any feedback from manage-ment.”Goss agrees additional resources is need-

ed. “However, we only have one caravanwhich is stationed at Town Centre. I willhave to see where we can acquire anotherfor Mandalay.”Westcape Villas residentWaydeline Hen-

dricks says 87housebreak-inshavebeen re-ported in a period of 12 months.“Wehada suspect break into threehomes

in one day,” she says. “People have becomedespondent, aswewait fourhours forpoliceto respond.”Goss says residentsmust ensure informa-

tion given to policewill lead to a conviction.“We cannot recycle criminals.”Lentegeur Community Policing Forum

chairperson Basil Coetzee encourages resi-dents to see the men in blue as a part of thesolution. “We have to work together.”

MUNICIPALITY

Offices toremain openLAILA MAJIET

@laila_newsie

Thedoors of theStrandfonteinCashandAccount Enquiry and Motor VehicleRegistration office will remain open

until further notice.Council had initially intended to close

the offices in the coastal village amid plansto relocate to the Liberty Promenade Shop-ping Centre in November. But City of Cape Town officials have

since taken the decision to keep the doorsof the Strandfontein offices open due to thevast area it serves.Deputy mayor and Mayoral Committee

member for Finance Ian Neilson says thePromenade Mall was chosen as the pilot tolocate a City customer care office in a shop-ping centre. But the City believes it would be in the

best interests of everyone to try and retainthis office, he says. “Discussions are under-way between the landlord and theCity’s Fa-cilities Management Department to see ifthe City can renew or extend their leasethat would have expired on 30 September, after keeping it open on a month-to-monthbasis,” Neilson explains. The facility opened its doors in 1997.A total of 5 000 transactions are processed

at this office each month. The pilot project to relocate council offic-

es to a mall form part of the City’s strategyto ensure customer care facilities are moreaccessible, Neilson says.Relocating to a mall would mean longer

operational hours. The City’s office in this mall would be

open Mondays to Sundays and businesshours would be the same as the shoppingmallwhichareMondays toThursdays from09:00 to 18:00, Fridays from 09:00 to 19:00,Saturdays from 09:00 to 17:00 and Sundaysand public holidays from 09:00 to 15:00.“In order for these offices to relocate to

shopping malls, the City will need to closesome offices within that area – after takingall of the pros and cons of the area con-cerned into consideration – and move thestaff and equipment to the shopping mall,”he adds.Strandfontein residents are divided on

the issue. Some insist it is a good move, as many

people are not able to visit the council offic-es during working hours.Others maintain there is a great need for

a council facility in the seaside suburb.Working mom Maggie Davids believes a

cash office at a mall is ideal.“Asaworkingparent it is nearly impossi-

ble to get to the council offices duringwork-ing hours. I have to take time off to go tothe cash office,” she says.Farouk Isaacs reiterates this.“While it is convenient to have the coun-

cil offices on our doorsteps, it would begreat if the operational hours were extend-ed to assist those whowork,” hemaintains.JonathanMartin (67) says travelling long

distances to the nearest mall just to do atransaction is not financially possible forsome.“There are people who barely have mon-

ey for food and now they are expected tofork out cash for travelling fees should thecouncil offices move,” he points out.

WARNING SIGNALS

Smoke alertUp to R35m could be saved by the City

of Cape Town thanks to a new smokedetection technology system.

The method detects illegal stormwaterand sewer cross-connections.Testing was conducted in various parts

of the city and under different conditionsto determine the system’s efficacy lastweek, council officials say.Mayoral Committee member for Utility

Services Ernest Sonnenberg says the sys-tem is ready for use in detecting illegal dis-charges into the sewerage system.“The introduction of the smoke testing

technology is likely to result in significantsavings for ratepayers,” he says. The system involves pumping smoke in-

to the local sewerage system to locate inap-propriate stormwarter admissions into thesewerage system.“Previously it was not possible to detect

or pinpoint where this was taking placewithout canvassing a large number of prop-erties.“Now Water and Sanitation officials can

simply walk down the street and note thelocation of these cross-connections basedon the presence of plumes of smoke,” Son-nenberg says.

If unsanctioned connections are foundthe property owners will be given a compli-ance order to rectify the matter within astipulated period. Those who do not comply will be fined in

terms of the Wastewater Bylaw.“Illegal connections are problematic be-

cause especially duringwetweather excesswater can stretch the capacity of the waste-water conveyance systems. Not only canthis result in overflows, but the City’swastewater treatment plants are beingforced to process water that otherwiseshould not have been treated,” Sonnenbergexplains.“Limiting the amount of water that is un-

necessarily treated every year will im-prove the quality of effluent that enters theenvironment. And not only will the envi-ronmental benefit be significant, but un-pleasant overflows which could causehealth issues and discomfort will also belimited resulting in significant savings forratepayers.”Sonnenberg urges residents to cooperate

with officials who issue notices if contra-vention exists on their properties.“It is only with your collaboration that

this problem can be effectively tackled.”

LIFESAVING

Safety boost for local beachesAs the summer season nears, more lifeguards will be coveringthe beaches of the Mother City. The City of Cape Town last

week approved the partnershipbetween council and LifesavingWestern Province to ensure thatlifesaving services will be availa-ble for the upcoming 2014/15 sum-mer season. While the municipality is re-

sponsible for ensuring the safetyof beach users throughout theyear, the peak summer seasonfrom October to February sees anincreased number of seaside visi-tors which requires additionallife guarding resources, councilofficials say in a statement. The City will contribute R3,5 m

toLifesavingWesternProvince to“enable the organisation to fulfil

its obligation of ensuring safetyon the beaches”, says MayoralCommittee member for Commu-nity Services and Special ProjectsBelinda Walker.“Trained and competent life-

guards are one of themost criticalrequirements for safety at ameni-ties.“Lifesaving Western Province

has a pool of well trained and

qualified lifeguards who are ableto deliver an essential service,”she says. This partnership will allow for

a combination of volunteer andpaid accredited lifeguards for the2014/15 season.Walker says for the upcoming

summer period, council’s Safetyand Security directorate willtrain a number of lifeguards to be

qualified as volunteer Law En-forcement officers. They willhave powers to confiscate liquorand arrest offenders who do notobey instructions from life-guards.The intention is that lifeguards

will increasingly be trained aslaw enforcement officers and cer-tified to enforce City bylaws onbeaches.

STREET PEOPLE

Plan to assisthomelessA 56-strong team will be heading to the

streets in a bid to help the homelessturn their lives around.

Council’s Social Development and EarlyChildhood Development Directorate re-cently held an inductionprogramme for thenew fieldworkers and clerkswhohave beenemployed through the Expanded PublicWorks Programme (EPWP) to help imple-ment the directorate’s Street People Pro-gramme.R2.5m is being spent on the initiative,

council officials confirm. An induction programme was recently

held for 49 fieldworkers and seven clerkswho will be employed by the Street PeopleProgramme until the first quarter of nextyear. The fieldworkers’ main objective will be

to engage with street people with a view toproviding assistance to those who want toget off the streets.Their tasks will include monitoring the

number of street people in their respectiveareas; identifying individual needs, includ-ing health issues and their prospects of re-turning home; identifying newarrivals andusing resources available to discouragethem from making a home on the streets;and facilitating other services required andtransfer to assessment centres.Suzette Little, the Mayoral Committee

member for Social Development and EarlyChildhood Development, says the directo-rate aims to employ additional fieldwork-ers during the course of this financial year,

once more funding becomes available.Between April last year and June, 116

fieldworkerswere employed. Plans are alsoin place to appoint 24 permanent fieldwork-ers.“The appointment of fieldworkers is cru-

cial in our engagement with street people,”Little says.“They are at the coal face on a daily basis

and are able to help effect meaningfulchange in the lives of those who find them-selves on the street and who are looking fora way out. The beauty of this initiative isthat we are not only helping people on thestreet.“We are also addressing unemployment

through the appointment of the fieldwork-ers – thus tackling two very important chal-lenges in our city.”In addition, the directorate will continue

providing employment opportunities forstreet people through the EPWP cleaningproject. In the previous financial year, 500 street

people were employed to clean and main-tain parks, cemeteries and kramats forthree months.“We held a workshop earlier this year

where many street people indicated thatthey want to get off the streets, but face sev-eral challenges including unemployment.By creating these opportunities throughtheEPWP,we are able to put themona paththat helps restore their dignity and theirconfidence, which in turnassists the reinte-gration process,” Little says.

Workers sigh with relief as pay day brings with it an in-flux of cash and opportunities. But for some, this cash in-jection is an excuse for reckless behaviour.Provincial government released statistics showing that

weekends after pay day bring a 24% increase in carnageon our roads.Six people a day are killed on average in motor acci-

dents over these weekends. This past pay day weekendsaw at least 25 deaths on Western Cape roads – the thirdworst weekend of the year. The increase has in part been attributed to increased

numbers on the road as people travel to visit loved ones. However, the accidents have also been linked to an in-

crease in drunken driving – made possible by the moneyinmotorists’ pockets. Almost 80 arrests for drunk drivingwere made this weekend alone. While alcoholmay offer a temporary reprise from some

of our more grim realities, these binges also bring an in-creased risk of death in accidents and alcohol-related ill-ness.Binge drinking leads to motor accidents, falls, burns,

drowning and hypothermia. Homicide, suicide, domesticviolence, heart attacks, STIs and meningitis have alsobeen linked to binge drinking, according to a study. It can result in alcohol poisoning, which can be fatal,

and drinking among youth between 21 and 25 years canalso stunt brain development.Surely this money could be better spent investing in

one’s future. At a recent event, mayor Patricia De Lille said alcohol

is still one of the most commonly abused substanceswhich leads to several negative effects on our communi-ties, such as Foetal Alcohol Syndrome. Over 10 000 bottlesof alcohol, confiscated on the city’s beaches, were de-stroyed at the event.Imagine if a portion of this wasted money could be re-

turned to our communities. It could, if only we turnedaway from reckless spending and invested our hardearned earnings in education and community projects.

Jobs: how is State helping? Many of the newspaper reports regardinggangsterism and crime in coloured areaslink this to unemployment and poverty. Yetcoloured people in theWestern Cape are los-ing their jobs by the day. Less coloureds arebeing employed in major retail stores eventhough these stores are located in almost ex-clusively coloured areas.

Government departments are even worse. It appears they would not think twice to

get rid of coloured employees.Government’s affirmative action policy is

usually given the blame for this.Bursary, learnership and study opportu-

nities also bypass most of them. What is government’s planwith the provi-

sion of jobs to and empowerment of colouredpeople?

Hardly anyone is willing to stand up andvoice their dissatisfaction about this.

Is there no one who genuinely cares aboutthe upliftment and development of this con-stantly overlooked group of our country?

Will the recent amendments to the Em-ployment Equity Act bring about any posi-tive change at all?GINO CONTALDI,Tafelsig

Sassa: ‘no help to get pension’I would like to know how far all the pension-ers came with their money being deducted.

My grandmother, aged 87, got paid R700.She doesn’t own a cellphone [for which] tobuy airtime.

I was at the South African Social SecurityAgency (Sassa).

They gave me a number to call. It was notthe call centre number. This after I threat-ened to phone the [media] for answers.

It is not fair to old people to not give thema direct answer to where their pension is go-ing.

I’m frustrated because I had to stay out ofmy work twice to assist my grandmother. Please help to voice our concerns clearly.Nobody is helping and I’m not going to leaveit here; even if I have to take this to courtfor her sake.JESSICA

Maintenance: other side of coinIn response to the story “Father’s rights ig-nored” (People’s Post, 9 September). I am onthe opposite side of this coin.

I am not disputing what he is goingthrough, but I know what it feels like to betreated as the problem.

I went to theMaintenance Court whenmyson turned eight. Never in those eight yearsdid I refuse for his father to see him. Butwhen he decided to get married and reducemymaintenance, I had to turn to the courts.

The very place that was supposed to assistme and guide me treated me like a criminal.I was only there to get what is rightfully inmy son’s best interest.

But they won. My son’s maintenance wasreduced and I never bothered going back tocourt because I knew I was fighting a losingbattle.

My son was paid a lousy R600 a monthsince the age of about two until he turned

18. My ex couldn’t afford to pay more, butthe day we appeared he had a lawyer. I wassitting with hospital bills that I had to payoff, but we made it despite that struggle.

Collecting the money at the office everymonth was something I dreaded becauseeven there us women are made to feel use-less. We aren’t treated with the respect wedeserve. Trust me; I spoke to many womenwhile spending hours there to collect themoney.

Sometimes the money wasn’t even in, be-cause some men feel they can do that. Wejust had to fight that tireless fight.

I thank God today that that part of my lifeis over. It was no fun and it is not fair onour kids.

We are already raising them alone. We do not need to be victimised over it.

We dowhat is in the best interest of our kids.ANON

Protect womenHow can we help reduce rape cases thisspring and summer?

I have grappled with the issue of persist-ent rape cases and sexual harassment onwomen. What comes to play is the fact thatwomen are weaker vessels and even if thereare cases of sexual harassment for both gen-ders, women seem to be more affected thanthe men.

South Africa is a great country with richcultural heritage. The Medical ResearchCouncil results estimates about 3 600 report-ed rape cases a day in South Africa. I wasshocked when I read those stats recentlyduring Women’s Month!

One wonders why this is the case in acountry with such a rich cultural heritage. How can we help our girls and women? Aslong as we hide this issue, it will keep per-sisting.

It is high time we stop assuming it will fixitself.

Menaremeant tobeaprotection to awom-an but the minute they view a woman as acompetitor who needs to be silenced, therewill always be a problem.

I am also appalled when I walk the streetsofMuizenberg and seewomenwearing littleto no clothing. No wonder men are temptedsexually.

I realise there are many causes of rape. But I want women all over South Africa tobe cautious, and to help the men. And men, protect your women!MARGARET GICHUKI

I was so excited when, after entering bySMS, I received a phone call advising thatI was a winner.

The day was fantastic – the weather couldnot have beenmore perfect; the bus ride androute was absolutely magical and … stop-ping on Signal Hill for that excellent lunchbox – oh, wow!

Slim chance for Cycle Tour entriesGeneral entries fornext year’sCapeTownCycle Tour closed after just eight hours.Entries opened at 14:00 last Friday and

closed by 22:00.Recently renamed the Cape TownCycle

Tour, the race attracts cyclists fromaround the globe. “We are delighted thatthe newly renamed tour is still as popular

as it has been over the past 37 years, eventhough we are completely taken aback bythe speed at which entries have sold out,”said David Bellairs, a director of the CapeTown Cycle Tour Trust.“We understand there’s still a great de-

mand for entries and we will investigatethe possibility of freeing up some corpo-

rate group entries to accommodate indi-viduals who were unsuccessful. An an-nouncement in this regard will be madeby the end of the month.”The 2015 edition will take place on Sun-

day 8 March. Organisers expect about35 000 riders to line-up in Hertzog Boule-vard to tackle the picturesque 109kmroute. Cyclists still looking to secure aplace in next year’s event should visitwww.cycletour.co.za.
