LAILA MAJIET WHAT should have been a nor- mal shopping trip turned into a nightmare for a New Woodlands family. Two boys, aged 12 and 14, say they were victimised by security at Pick n Pay in Town Centre. Their parents have laid a harass- ment complaint with the supermar- ket’s head office, and the matter is currently under investigation. But the parents of the trauma- tised children also want the securi- ty company probed, as they had not followed “protocol”. Last week, the Heideman family had gone shopping and claim they were followed by store security from the time they entered. Security suspected one of the boys had stolen a chocolate, howev- er according to his parents, he had placed it in the trolley. No stolen items were found on the children. Sylvan Heideman, a crime intelli- gence officer and the father of the two boys, says: “My wife and I felt like the parents of two thieves after leaving that store. We entered Pick n Pay and I immediately noticed se- curity watching us. We went along doing our shopping with our chil- dren at our side at all times.” However, Southern Spear Securi- ty Agency says CCTV footage shows otherwise. The agency’s operations manag- er, Warren Pretorius, claims: “The children had been seen wandering the shop on their own.” Sylvan says: “When we got to the till, the boys argued about which chocolates they wanted. And in front of the cashier, the youngest chose a packet of bubblegum and the eldest a chocolate which they threw in the trolley. The boys then stood at the bulletin board, but were still in our sight. As we unpacked the trolley and got ready to pay, my wife and I noticed that the children were gone.” He says he went to the front of the shop and couldn’t find the young- sters. “It was then that I remembered seeing two security guards – one male and one female – follow us. I then looked outside the shop and saw the security office open. The same two security guards whom I had seen following us then came out of the room with my children.” Brandon Heideman (14) says he was shocked when taken in. “We never knew what was going on and didn’t know what to do. The lady security guard came behind us while the man led us away. They had us against the wall in the office. The lady pointed at me, waving her walkie talkie in my face saying I took the chocolate. I was scared. “I told them I don’t have the choc- olate because I gave it to my dad. The security got aggressive and said ‘Jy, where is the choc- olate’?’ When they found nothing on us they let us go.” Child rights organisa- tion Molo Songololo says the chil- dren’s rights have been violated. The organisation's Patric Solo- mon says: “It is illegal. Detaining, interrogating and searching a child in the absence of a parent or legal guardian is an infringement of the Children’s Act. If there is suspicion that a crime has been committed by a minor, the Children’s Justice Act comes into effect. It clearly stipu- lates that children should be se- cured, their parents informed and police and a social worker should be called in to search and question the children with the parents’ con- sent.” “We would like to encourage all businesses to adhere to the law. The parents should lay a com- plaint against Pick n Pay and should open a case with police.” He says: “Even if the children did shoplift, they should not have been removed from their parents’ care. It is not security’s business, but the business of police to search chil- dren after obtaining consent from children’s parents or guardians.” Mom Cecily Heideman says she could barely sleep after the inci- dent. “I was so traumatised by the incident and the lack of cooperation from the store manager. I was in a state of panic when my children went missing. My children have now been branded as thieves.” Pick n Pay spokesman Tamra Ve- ley says Pick n Pay has been in con- tact with the family and apologised to them for this incident. “We are in the process of conduct- ing a full investigation,” she says. “The store is a franchise store and the matter is being dealt with between Pick n Pay and the fran- chisee at the highest level.” The parents also sought help from the community policing fo- rum. From page 1Basil Coetzee, the New Woodlands CPF

subforum chairperson, says when hewent to see the store manager the nextday, he showed no remorse for what hadhappened.

“He just walked away, saying he wasunder no obligation to keep the footage asevidence,” he says.

“This is the norm in Mitchell’s Plain.Children get searched all the time in theabsence of parents or guardians. It’s a rac-ist perception that all people of colour arethieves.”

The Southern Spear Security Agency isexpected to launch an investigation in tothe matter.

Pretorius says: “We act on the brief wereceive from Pick n Pay. We often havechildren stealing in the shop. Adults sendchildren in to steal.

“However, we have never detained chil-dren as we are aware of the legal ramifica-tions thereof. We do search all personswho we suspect of stealing, however thisis only done once the customer has passedthe till point.”

Pretorius justified the unlawful ques-tion and searching of the children, sayingthey had been acting on the proceduraldocument issued by Pick n Pay.

According to the document, which Peo-ple’s Post has in its possession, securityare to search and question children under

the age of 16 if they suspect them to havestolen from the shop.

The document makes provision for hav-ing a Pick n Pay representative presentduring questioning and searching of a mi-nor, but does not stipulate that the chil-dren be asked if they are at the shop withtheir parents.

Pretorius says: “I have seen the footage. The children came in to the store withtheir parents, but theywerenotwith themat the till.

“The children were at till four gettingchocolates, while the parents were at tillsix.

“The security officers were not awarethat the children were with their parents.Security officers did not ask the childrenif they were in the shop with their par-ents.”

Pretorius confirmed that no stolenitems were found on the children.

The Heideman family’s till slip showschocolates had been bought and paid for.

The chocolates are positioned by thetills at the front of the store.

Veley says: “If customers ever findthemselves in a situation where they arenot receiving the service they deservefrom Pick n Pay we encourage them tophone us on our customer care line on0800 112 288.”

People’s Post are unable to determinewhether this was an isolated incident.

Child rights violation at centre

Dear reader,

When it comes to our health, happiness andwell-being, we’re prepared to pay any priceand explore every option.

And when conventional methods don’twork, we consider alternatives, often out ofdesperation – opening the door to exploita-tion for monetary gain.

I have heard of some bizarre practices, which people are willing to pay good moneyto take part in, with the hope of being emo-tionally and psychologically cured after-wards. Ridicule, insults, humiliation and ver-bal abuse form part of the “therapy” offeredby one such programme.

Then there’s the plethora of healers thathave popped up like weeds all over our cityin the past few years.

They usually go by names such as “Doc-tor”, “Chief”, “Queen” or “Mama”, and whilethe claims they make may seem ludicrous tosome, for others who believe and are desper-ate, they represent a chance at love, health, employment, financial security, happiness ...

Clearly their businesses are supported, asseveral rent in the pricey southern suburbs, place regular advertisements and pay for the

print and dissemination of fliers. The promises made in these ads lure many

unsuspecting people into spending their lastpenny on a visit to healers in hopes of it bring-ing them the job, husband or huge lottery winthat would turn their lives aroundforever.

While People’s Post respects ourreaders’ right as consumers tomake informed decisions when itcomes to the products and servicesweadvertise inourpapers;wealsouphold and share in the burden ofresponsible advertising.

The revenue from advertising isessential to our newspapers’ sus-tainability and growth, but whenit comes to ads of this nature, thereare considerations. In the sameway our editorial content is scrutinised forfacts, fairness and accuracy, so too are our ad-verts.

It is in this light we re-affirm your freedomof choice. You have the right to decide. But,

let the buyer beware.Thank you to People’s Post reader Colin

Taylor for your input around this importantissue.

Before I sign off, allow me to share this sto-ry with you...

Being naturally curious, wewant to try out things and someof us may have visited a healer forthe experience, or if you’re a jour-nalist, in the name of research...

No names provided but this isthat journalist’s experience:

. Visit healer in southern sub-urbs, assess consulting roomsand declare them light, clean andabove board.

. Met by “Mama” somethingand have consultation. No fee

paid.. On second visit, “Mama” is joined by her

husband, the “Doctor”, a tall, dark, authorita-tive-looking man. Goosebumps.

. All go behind a curtain to a candle-lit

room resembling deepest, darkest Africa Ter-ror. “Doctor” sits on one side of drum with“Mama” and journalist opposite.

. “Doctor” explains process which entailscalling on the ancestors to tell the journalistwhat is wrong with her and give a cure.

. Candles are snuffed. Journalist sees herlife flashing before her.

. “Doctor” starts invoking the ancestorsand commands journalist to answer ances-tors.

. “Doctor” voice fades and is replaced bystrange voice (ancestor) who begins conver-sation with mortified journalist who croaksone word replies.

. After eternity, ordeal ends with journal-ist told to buy three black cows and five redchickens (something like that; at that point, accuracy checks flew off the radar)

. Fee R80. Formerly fearless journalisthappily parts with R100 and flees.

THE Mitchell’s Plain Day Hospital hascome under fire for misplacing patients’files as well as issuing the wrong medica-tion.

A Portlands couple says it is of grave con-cern to them that the system is not helpingthe people it serves.

Stafford Petersen (39) suffers from chronicback pain and visited the hospital last monthto see the doctor.

After arriving at the hospital at 06:30 onWednesday 6 June, he was only seen by a doc-tor at 12:55 as the doctor was about to leave. He blames administrative staff for this asthey were unable to find his folder.

Petersen says: “I was at the day hospitalnot even a month ago, and before that thesame thing happened. Only this time the so-cial worker gave her office key to the porterand me to go look for the folder as she wason a tea break.”

He says that he went to the staff room -which patients are not allowed to do - but wasforced because at his last visit the socialworker had his folder.

Petersen’s other concern – apart from ittaking several hours to locate his file – is thata porter had access to confidential records.

“I was allowed to look through all the filesin the social worker’s office in a bid to findmy own. I wouldn’t want other people goingthrough my files.”

Petersen had been abused as a child and isonly now opening up to a social worker.

He says it has been a long recovery, but hefinally feels like he can talk to someone.

But now he is filled with uncertainty.“It concerns me that almost anyone is al-

lowed to go through confidential medicalrecords because files are going missing andpatients have to locate their own files.”

The provincial health department’s Anqel-ique Jordaan says Petersen’s concerns hadbeen addressed.

“On 6 June the acting nursing manager ad-dressedaverbal concern raisedby thepatientregarding medical files being moved aroundby a porter, known personally to the patient. The patient was reassured that porters are

allowed to move folders to and from differentservice points, and that all patient informa-tion is treated as confidential, as well as thatbreach of such confidentially is dealt with se-riously.”

She says the complaints procedure wasalso explained to the patient.

Jordaan countered Petersen’s claim. “Med-ical files may be accessed by all administra-tion and administrative support staff whichincludes porters and the patients them-selves,” she says.

Stafford’s wife, Noleen Petersen, says shehad also received unsatisfactory service afterbeing given the incorrect medication.

“I have high blood pressure and cannot gowithout my medication. I got the incorrecttablets which had been labelled for someoneelse. Luckily, I still had three tablets left frommy last visit.”

The provincial health department says itwas aware of logistical issues regarding thedispensing of medication.

Jordaan says they have received no formalcomplaints regarding this. “As of 1 April, theprovincial health department appointed anew service provider, UTI Pharma. In the

past month, site visits have been conductedto assess and monitor the origin of the prob-lems. Every facility posed different problemsand the chronic medication delivery servicehas now been adapted to local conditions.”

Patients unsatisfied with hospital staff areurged to lodge an immediate complaint.

A GROUP of stay-at-homemothers in Eastridge have tak-en action against drug abuse.

The residents of Gazelle Streetsay they have a huge problemwith teenagers smoking daggaand gambling on an open fieldwhere younger children play.

A few months ago, the commu-nity became fed-up and started agroup of nine women to stand upagainst youth with ill intentionsusing the park.

Karon du Plessis, the foundingmember of the action group saysthey would gather around a bon-fire on the field in order to keepthe troublemakers away.

“At times we would call the po-lice when these youngsters getout of hand,” she says.

One night, while sittingaround the fire and monitoringthe situation, the ladies decidedthey were going to organise anevent in that very park they areguarding.

A youth fun day was held in thepark last month to act as a deter-rent for druggies.

Du Plessis says: “Teenagersare smoking dagga there everyday. We are trying to get the teen-agers to see the error of theirways.

“We explained to them that we

don’t want this kind of activityhappening on our doorstep.

“I have gone to the police andthey have informed us thatEastridge has the most docketsfor drug possession and housebreak-ins by young people. Chil-dren as young as 10 years old aresitting in the company of teenag-ers who are gambling. It is not ap-propriate for children to be grow-ing up under these circumstanc-es.”

When People’s Post visited thefield, almost 20 children wereplaying in the public open spacewhile the smell of dagga lingeredin the air.

When this reporter confronteda group of three youngsters in thepark, they said it wasn’t themwho were smoking, but that thesmell was coming from a neigh-bouring house.

Du Plessis says they started no-ticing the problem aroundChristmas and New Year.

Ward councillor Solomon Phi-lander says the upgrade of thispark is in thepipeline, buthe can-not say when it will take place.

“The upgrading of the park ison my to-do list. I need to go andconsult the community and aftera public participation process, the correct action will be taken toaddress the matter,” he says.

“The community is willing totake ownership of the park. I

thereforeneed to consultwith thecommunity to find out what theywant to see happening with it.

“I had public meetings earlierthis year, however no one fromGazelle Street attended the pub-lic meetings held on 14, 15 and 17May.”

Philander says a resident stay-ing on Elephant Street met withhim to raise her concerns withactivities in the park.

“I will visit this resident with-in a week or two to re-start thecommunity process.”

ZulfahAbrahams, another con-cerned resident and grandmoth-er of five, says parents are awareof what their children are doingbut they are not interested insolving the problem.

“I have grandchildren whoplay in that park and I do notwant them exposed to that kindof behaviour. I had a son who wason drugs and I know how difficultit can be.

“It is difficult for me to just sitby and see other children fall intothe same trap. I want to help oth-er children stay away fromdrugs,” she says.

Abrahams says the group’score principle is “my child isyour child and your child is mychild”.

Abrahams says they used tohave bonfires every Friday andSaturday, but now that winter ishere, she says it is too cold to con-tinue.

“When I see teenagers smokingin front of my grandchildren, I goand speak to the teenagers and re-mind them that the young onesare seeing what they do, thinkingit is okay,” she says.

Du Plessis says: “The problemhas improved as fewer childrenare smoking their in the day, butthe problem persists at night.”

It is believed that those smok-ing in the open field on GazelleStreet stay in surrounding

streets.“Of the children smoking dag-

ga on the field, 99% are not fromGazelle Street, and 90% of themare boys.”

The community has requestedthat more events be planned forthe park to help keep childrenaway from crime.

Du Plessis says: “There are somany children under 13 who donot go to school. These childrenend up roaming the streets andget involved in all sorts of wrongactivities.

“There are one or two drugmerchants operating nearby. Ifear that these young childrenwill be easily influencedandusedto sell drugs.”

Police spokesperson ConstableJerome Voegt says: “We do urgeresidents to contact their sectorcommander Captain SydneyHoogbaard on 079 894 1498 shouldthey have any information aboutillegal activities in their area.”

AN ELDERLY couple living on VanguardDrive says they are inundated with peopletrying to set up shacks on their property.

The booming Siqalo informal settlementborders the couple’s land.

Arnold Schultz (68) and his wife HestherSchultz have been staying on the adjacentproperty ever since they got married.

Schultz says the property belonged to hisgrandfather back in 1921.

“The settlement has grown so much recent-ly and has posed a problem the last twomonths. I only have one leg – I cannot runaround like I used to trying to keep people offmy land,” he says.

“The property had been fenced off, but theyfirst stole the wiring of the fence and thenpulled out the poles. I have stayed on thisproperty since I was born.

“Not only do we have the problem of squat-ters wanting to build here, but the neighbour-ing dump yard has now started spilling overinto our backyard.”

Hesther says: “We are two pensioners hav-ing to fight every day and pull out structuresthat go up on our land, all without help fromthe powers that be.”

In a recent statement by ward councillorNatalie Bent, she says: “The City of CapeTown has advised the surrounding land own-ers to appoint a private security company toassist them in protecting their land. Policehave pledged their support in dealing with

cannot afford to pay rent so they come hereand create a home for themselves.”

Schultz says: “There are many good peoplestaying here. We have a great relationshipwith the committee operating in this area toensure the building of shacks is controlled. There are also so many bad elements stayinghere.

“We get very little sleep, four hours tops.If I am not on watch then my wife is on watch.Law enforcement, police and land invasionhave been here, but to no avail. Some of theresidents have gone so far as to threaten us,saying ‘I will burn you and your bakkie’.”

Brian Tsetsana, the committee chairper-son, says they aim to ensure that the Schultzproperty is respected and that their family issafe.

“There are elements that come and set upshop where ever they find land,” he says.

The community had been without toiletsuntil last week, however, they are still with-out running water.

Tsetsana says Siqalo – which means the be-ginning – has flourished over the past twomonths.

“I encourage the community to stand to-gether in ensuring we get access to water andsanitation,” he urges.

Tsetsana admits to the many bad elementsusing the settlement as an escape route orthose who come in from the back and set updwellings on the Schultz’s property.

“We cannot chase those people away asthey too need a place to stay. However, we tryand give them a role toplay in the community todeter them from commit-ting crime. So they eitherjoin the committee or the

neighbourhood watch.”Sylvia Xhego (42) had been building her

new home at the settlement when People’sPost visited the area on Thursday.

She says: “I am desperate for a home. I wasa backyarder, unemployed and unable to payrent. I moved here with my three childrenaged eight, 11 and 19 so that we can have aplace to stay. It is not easy, but we have totry our best.”

About 10 shacks were in the process of be-ing built during the hour People’s Post visit-ed.

Bakkies offloading building materials andfurniture as well as squatters carrying theirbelongings could be seen.

While the area is already congested, peopleare still streaming in by the numbers.

Bent says: “The only defence against amass invasion is City staff preventing the of-floading of material from Vanguard Driveand Old Weltevreden Road. On three occa-

However, Hesthersays that not evenhiring a securitycompany deters po-tential thieves fromtrespassing orbreaking in.

“We had securitystaying on thepremises, but theshack dwellersbroke into theguard’s house andcame through theroof, tied him upand cleaned out hisflat. We have hadsquatters break intoour shed everynight, stealingbuilding supplies toset up their shacks. It’s like midnightshopping with a100% discount,” shesays.

Siqalo residentshave formed a com-mittee to deal withthe recent influx ofpeople from SamoraMachel, Kraaifon-tein, Khayelitshaand the streets.

Bob Ngcwangu, acommittee membersays: “There arehundreds of shackshere. There are notenough homes else-where for these peo-ple to stay. They

AFTER years of be-ing both a studentand a mother, a 55-year-old woman fi-nally achieved herlife’s goal of earningher right to take tothe chalkboard.

Monica Joshua, amother of two fromMontrose Park, re-cently graduatedwithher B.Ed from theCape Peninsula Uni-versity of Technolo-gy.

Following in thefootsteps of her fa-ther, who taught atRosmead Central Pri-mary in Claremont, she was capped byTrevor Manuel at herrecent graduation, describing the expe-rience as “an honour”.

“It was very intimidating being one of theoldest students at CPUT but I enjoyed thechallenge and am proud to be one of only afew who eventually successfully completedthe course,” she says.

Joshua left school after completing Stand-ard 7 when her father died and she was forcedto find a job to support her family.

While working in the electronics industry, she attended night school and eventuallycompleted Matric.

“It was really tough but I continued mystudies with Intec College and then laterthrough Unisa. With the help of my family– and especially the financial support of myhusband, Rodney – I decided to stop workingand study full time,” she recalls.

In 2007, Joshua received a bursary fromthe provincial education department.

Four years later, she officially completedher studies, giving her the tools to work withchildren.

“I believe that God gave me daily inspira-tion which kept me going through the toughtimes when I felt like giving up. My wish isthat people are inspired to believe in them-selves and to follow their dreams.”

She describes her teaching as a passion. While studying, she ran weekend remedialclasses for children struggling at school for10 years.

But Joshua isn’t done with midnight studysessions yet.

“Once I have at least two years teaching ex-perience, I would like to continue my studiestoward my honours in remedial studies. With big student numbers, teachers are notable to effectively transfer their knowledgeto learners,” she explains.

“I see a big need for remedial teachers inareas like Mitchell’s Plain and I would liketo be part of the solution. My dream is to oneday open a facility that would provide afford-able and effective remedial services forlearners of all grades.”

PEOPLE in Mitchell’s Plain depending onan Eastridge soup kitchen may be lefthungry if no help is offered soon.

Esmeralda Maart has been running a soupkitchen which has offered daily servings forlunch.

A lack of funding has Maart working withone hand tied behind her back. For now, sheis only able to serve soup two to three daysduring the week.

Shoprite and Royco jumping in once amonth to provide a mobile soup kitchen is notenough to feed hungry mouths.

Learners from surrounding schools, crech-es, the unemployed, elderly and disabled arejust some who benefit from the soup kitch-en.

“I do it for the children,” says Maart.“To see them being fed makes me happy.

I’ve never come across people fighting forfood.”

Churches in the area provide some helpand ease the load for Maart and her friends.

Maart started the soup kitchen two yearsago when friends encouraged her to giveback to the community.

Her good nature feeds an average of 1 000

people a month. Most of the people come from surrounding

areas in Mitchell’s Plain, but residents ofKhayelitsha walk to the soup kitchen as well.

Maart wakes up at 6:00 every morning andis busy preparing soup by 7:00.

They serve one cup per person and have tomake 410 litres each day.

“I help out at soup kitchens in Rocklandsevery Tuesday,” she says.

Her struggling soup kitchen has notstopped her fighting for other feedingschemes.

She hopes to help sustain other soup kitch-ens by finding corporate sponsors to adoptthem.

Maart’s biggest thanks goes to hawkers inher area that provide her with vegetablesfor the soup. Adams Butcher and MetroButcher have been supporting her with meatand bones.

Lisa Ronquest, the Director of Researchand Development at Mars Africa says: “Ina country where only one in five families arefood secure, we believe that the communitiesserved by soup kitchens benefit significant-ly.”

A fifth of the South African population do-nating one cup of soup can feed every personborn in the country for the next eight years.

“Children with iron deficiency performworse on educational tests and are less likelyto attend school,” says Ronquest.

The two mobile soup kitchens sponsored byShoprite and Royco supply over 60 000 cups

of soup across the greater Cape Town area.Routes between Hout Bay and Mitchell’sPlain are included.

Anyone wanting to help can contact Maarton (021) 391 9070.

Should Metro and cops merge?THE Metro Police may be absorbed intothe police service – if government givesit the green light.

The DA has reportedly vowed to fight thismove by the ANC to create a “single policeservice”, DA MP Dianne Kohler Barnardsaid in a statement.

People’s Post interns Tarren-Lee Habel-gaarn and Luzuko Zini polled readers tohear their views.

LET’S BE SAFE:Malickah Leensays safety isimportant. “Itreally makes nodifference. Theyare all policeand they shouldbe under onething. If it willnot affect thepolice or Metropolice negatively, it is fine. Ifthey will be doing their jobsand protectingus from criminals, I don’t seea problem withit.”

IT’S ALL THESAME: AviweMbitishwabelieves allpolice arethe same. “Ibelieve it isfine that theycan work together tofight crime;they are allpolice. Whycan’t theyget togetherand fightcrime? If thegovernmentdoes thatcrime will godown.”

VISIBILITYIS KEY:PatrickO’Shea feelsthat thingsshould stayas is, but thepolice canlearn fromthe MetroPolice, whoare “morevisible thanthe policebecausethey patrolall thetime”.

CHEAPER:MoniqueLedger says itwill be morecost effectivefor the country to haveone form ofauthority. “Inmy opinion itwill be cheaper to maintainand run oneunit than havetwo separateauthorities. Itis less adminand will bebetter to monitor performance.”

ASSISTANCE:Adrian Williamsfeels the MetroPolice are morehelpful than thepolice when itcomes to assisting the community. They are also faster to respond. “TheMetro Police arealways willing tohelp when weneed them andare quick to sortout the problem.”

CORRUPTION: Lionel Peterson isafraid that if theMetro Police getsabsorbed into thepolice, they maybe influenced bythe corruptionamong police officers. “My biggest fear is thatthe Metro Policewill be influencedby the police because the policearen’t always agood example tothe youth.”

ENFORCE THELAW: BonganiNdlovu thinksit will be agreat way tokeep the community safe bycombining thestrengths ofboth authorities. “It can bea good partnership because the police are goodat solvingcrime whilethe Metro Police are goodat enforcingthe law.”

HIV test failureWHAT message does government send whena banned HIV test kit is used at State hospi-tals?

Two years ago, SA’s HIV/Aids status wascause for alarm.

The Country Progress Report on the Decla-ration of Commitment on HIV/Aids carriesa forewordbynationalHealthMinisterDrPa-kishe Aaron Motsoaledi.

It reads that SA is “one of the countriesmost severely affected by the Aids epidemic, with the largest number of HIV infections”.

The report repeated a UNAIDS estimatewhich put the total number of persons livingwith HIV in SA at 5,7 million.

The primary prevention goal at the time ofthe report was for SA to “reduce the nationalHIV incidence rate by 50% by 2011”.

This “ambitious target” would be achievedthrough “prevention” as government’s main-stay and “most sustainable response to HIVand Aids”.

Fast-forward to March 2012 when aR22,5 million tender was reportedly awardedto a Durban company for an HIV test kitwhich was banned by the World Health Or-ganisation (WHO) two months previously.

The company, Pantech, would reportedlysupply 4,5 million test kits – SD Bioline – overthe next two years to government hospitals.

The tender was given the green light afterthe National Institute for Communicable Dis-eases (NICD) approved the kits.

WHO found the test kits have faulty results.Media reports indicate the WHO stated in

its advisory that governments should “cancelany pending procurement and no new pro-curements be initiated until further notice”.

Saying it was “not necessary to withdrawthe product”, a company spokesperson re-portedly said there “were only 66 000 faultytests”.

Pantech, said the spokesperson, has a “his-torical comfort with the product (which) hasnever let us down before”.

The question begs: even if there was onlyone faulty test kit, who at Pantech and in gov-ernment would trust the results of that kit?

I LOST my job in 2009 due to restructuring. Thishad a ripple effect on my life, especially finan-cially.

Due to my unemployment, everything wentwrong. I was too old to apply for any vacanciesand too young to apply for a State pension. There had been no income; I am divorced withthree growing children. I lost the house. Bothmy daughters got married and my son offeredto help.

We rented a room for R1 300 with the inten-tion of finding a bigger, affordable place. How-ever, due to my son’s substance abuse, he doesnot reside with me.

My health and financial status have wors-ened. I was blacklisted – which did not affectme as I had no intention of making debt. I ap-plied for a social grant and was informed by let-ter I was successful.

However, the doctor at the Mitchell’s PlainDay Hospital who filled in the grant applicationforms said I have gout, high blood pressure, prostrate and heart problems.

A social grant is equivalent to State pensionof R1 200. I am very grateful for the income, butsimple mathematics should tell you you’re notgoing to have food money if you have to pay

your burial policy and other essentials. My concern is not how much we receive from

Social Services, but rather seeking alternativeaccommodation.

Applications for old age homes are availableonly at the age of 60. I’m 59.

Community homes have criteria to be fol-lowed, including having a clean bill of health, earning a certain income and not being black-listed. Some grandparents are fortunate to beaidedby their childrenor grandchildren; othersmay have made provision in their younger daysfor times like these.

Unfortunately I do not fall within this catego-ry. There are grandparents worse off than I am,who have no grandchildren, or their offspringcan themselves barely make ends meet.

Where do senior citizens like myself go fromhere? We are asking the board of directors ofCommunity Care to revisit their criteria and re-lax or reconsider certain requirements, such asblacklisting. It is a crying shame that senior cit-izens, who have given so much to their commu-nity and country, are defenceless. They shouldnot be expected to run around looking for aplace to stay.ARTHUR PILLAY

Seniors shouldn’t look for shelter

. To Proudly Strandfontein: I’mliving here for 20 years. This areaof Wavecrest was just being built. So, yes, I know the area and all itsfaults and failures. About being awet panty – well, it’s because of peo-ple like you that this has becomesuch a substandard place to reside. It is only because people are tooscared to have a say or do some-thing, that people like you try tooverpower situations and live withthe times.

. The City has a dedicated taskteam for noise control and a com-plainant has the right to complainabout noise, as we are subjected toall kinds of cars being a nuisanceand popping wheels over weekends.

. I hand delivered a petition fortraffic calming measures in Den-negeur Avenue a year ago. To date,I have received no answer. They al-so do not reply to emails.

. To the boys travelling on thewhite Toyota bakkie down AZ Ber-man Drive last week: Those whothrew a brick in my son’s face whilehe was walking down the road, Iwant you to think of the conse-quences of your actions. His facewas bleeding and you laughed asyou drove away. Remember, itcould happen to you and it could bethat your eye gets thrown out. Tothe driver: be aware of what yourpassengers are doing at the back.

. Laila Majiet, don’t let Veareyfeed you a lot of misinformationabout the drug situation in Mitch-ell’s Plain. Let him tell what per-centage of drug convictions are fordealing and what percentage for us-ing drugs.

. Can you assist me in findingdomino clubs in Mitchell’s Plain orsurrounding areas? Jozaine

THE gravy train folks must build shelters forall the homeless, including the sex workers.

No-one sleeps outside in this cold and wetweather. At night the police must round up thehomeless and take them to their shelters. Alldogs and cats must be licensed and strays mustbe rounded up by the SPCA. The water and elec-

tricity bills go on the taxes. All citizens pay tax-es. The gravy train must cap petrol at, say, R5a litre and subsidise the rest. I see the biggerbanks now also have loan centres. Freeze theaccounts when customers become unemployed.Period.OP HERMANUS

LIAM MOSES

MILANO UNITED have sounded an earlywarning to their opponents in the Nation-al First Division (NFD), saying they willnot fear any other team.

The Grassy Park-based side will face someof South Africa biggest clubs in the NFD nextyear, including former Premier Soccer Leage(PSL) sides Vasco da Gama, MpumalangaBlack Aces, Dynamos and Cape Town giantsSantos – who were relegated from the PSL re-cently.

Milano qualified for the second tier ofSouth African football after securing the topspot in group B at the Vodacom League pro-motion playoffs in Limpopo last week, beforelosing to Roses United, the winners of groupA, in the final of the tournament.

Although United has been impressive in

the playoff tournament, many would arguethey could find themselves out of their depthin the NDF because of the sharp increase inprofessionalism and quality.

Head coach Theo Henpe, however, does notshare this sentiment and sayshis sidewill notpay reverence to any of their more estab-lished opponents, including Santos.

“I think experience counts for nothing anymore and we proved that this season. Santos,I do respect them as one of the biggest teamsin South Africa but I am also one of the mostexperienced coaches in South Africa,” saysHenpe. “I prepare very meticulously for eve-ry game and I have very good plans for thisseason. We won’t fear anyone when we playagainst them.”

Milano earned their place in the promotionplayoffs by winning the Western Cape Voda-com League by five points earlier this year, clinching the top spot in their playoff group

by defeating Soshanguve Sunshine, Batauand Tornado FC at the Peter Mokaba Stadi-um.

Henpe’s team scored nine goals in total andconceded just one, narrowly missed out onthe taking national crown when Roses wonlast Sunday’s final 4-2 on penalties – after thematch finished goalless.

The loss has done little to dampen what hasbeen a surprisingly successful season forHenpe.

The former Cape Town Spurs, Ajax CapeTown and Manning Rangers player was onlyappointedas coachofMilanoat thebeginningof the season and immediately started to re-build the club by releasing all but eight of thefirst team players who earned the club a sec-ond-place finish in the Vodacom League lastyear.

Henpe believes that his team has all the ex-perience they will need in him. “The big ad-

vantage we have is that we have a coach thathas played at every level and that has playedin playoffs across SA. I know exactly what toexpect and I prepared my team accordingly,”says Henpe.

“We were very disciplined – our organisa-tion and the way the players carried out myinstruction was the difference between our-selves and the teams in our group.”

Milano will return to Cape Town this week, and will start planning for the coming season.

Henpe adds that the team intends to makea few signings before the start of the seasonand that they could be hosting open trialssoon.

The club will also have to establish wherethey will play their games next season, astheir current home ground, the Rooikranssports field in Grassy Park, may not be suita-ble. Henpe says the club would definitely bestaying in the southern peninsula.

CRYSTAL PALACE FC have started plan-ning their assault on the third tier of SAfootball after winning promotion to the Vo-dacom League recently. The Manenberg club gained access to theleague by beating the winners of the otherSAB regional leagues, only three years af-ter starting their ascent up the local foot-ball ladder.Despite their rapid rise to through theranks of football, part owner and headcoach Bradley August has set his team rela-tively modest goals for their first season inthe Vodacom League.“In our first year we just want to do welland make sure we don’t get relegated andwe want to consolidate,” said August.“For some of the younger boys it will betheir first time playing in the league.“Then for the 2013/2104 season we want totry and really push hard to win the league,

because by then some of our players will beused to the league and will have more expe-rience. But if we do manage to win theleague next year it will be a bonus.”The team was reopened by the former Bafa-na Bafana striker in 2009, after lying dor-mant for around seven years. And, despite several major difficulties, they have made incredible progress sincethen.August says that the team can only affordto sign players from surrounding areas asthey would not be able to bring them totraining. Crystal Palace also operates un-der strict financial constraints and do notcurrently have any sponsors. In contrast to Palace, some of the clubs inthe Vodacom League are professional set-ups which contract their players full-time.August said that, although his team cannotafford to become fully professional immedi-ately, they will be making several changesto help them compete with the more estab-

lished sides in the tournament.“Our ambition is going to chance now be-cause we are going to a higher league. Ourvision will change now,” said August. He added that he would be making a fewsignings before the start of the season andworking hard to get the existing squad intotop shape.“My plan is to have a very good pre-seasonwhen we start in August and bring in fouror five players to help us,” said August.“I want to keep 90 percent of the squad –I want to get the boys fitter and stronger.“We need to be a little bit stronger. We needto teach the players to be a little bit moreprofessional.”August runs the club along with two peopleand says that he controls all of the footballaspects. leaving the administrative proc-esses to his partners. The former Hellenic, Santos and Ajax play-er, who grew up in Manenberg, added thatthe club is desperate for a sponsorship.

WITH no road races on the local road running calen-dar in Cape Town this weekend, all roads lead to Knys-na, with the popular Knysna Forest marathon andhalf marathon at Loerie Park on Saturday.

Race organiser Moses Gericke says they expect8 000 runners to participate in this year’s event.

Around 6 800 athletes will participate in the 21.1kmrace while 1 200 will tackle the gruelling marathonover the scenic 42.2km route.

Gericke says they have decided to implement a newtiming system this year. “For the first time ever wewill use a disposable timing chip. The chip linked toyourprofilewill behandedoutwithyour racenumberand race pack free of charge at registration,” he says.

“It must be attached to your shoes. Runners don’thave to return it. It should be a hit, because your timewill immediately be sent to you via SMS on your cell-phone.”

Gericke reiterated that substitutions are closed andno substitutions will be allowed at registration thisyear. Name changes or changes between half and fullmarathon will not be done at registration. Race packsmust be collected in person with proof of ID.

The transport problems, which resulted in the startof the race being delayed last year, should also be athing of the past. Sixty buses and 130 taxis will takerunners to the start in the forest. The first buses willleave Loerie Park at 04:30.

The marathon starts at 07:00, the fun run at 07:30and the half marathon at 08:00. Contact Moos Gericke0 082 763 7974.

DISABLED athletes across Cape Townare set to benefit thanks to the hard workand enterprise of a Mitchell’s Plainsports organisation.

The Greater Bulls Disabled Sports Clubhelped to form three different wheelchairbasketball teams in Khayelitsha, Ravens-mead and Delft last month, and now eachclub will receive new equipment to the valueof R10 000 from one of the organisation’spartners.

The new clubs and sporting equipment arejust two elements of a programme that hasseen the Bulls partner with the City of CapeTown, the provincial Department of CulturalAffairs and Sport and the National Youth De-velopment Agency (NYDA) to provide sport-ing opportunities and life skills to disabledpeople in Cape Town.

The programme is the brainchild of An-thony George, secretary of Greater Bulls andcame about after he made a proposal to thethree government organisations.

“My aim is to develop basketball in theprovince because we didn’t have basketballfor the past two years,” says George.

“Basketball on a provincial and nationallevel is not in order and we can’t let the sportdie because of that. That’s why we decidedto take it upon ourselves.”

The programme started on Saturday 9

June and involved members of the Bulls andemployees of the NYDA travelling to the dif-ferent areas to provide basketball coachingclinics and life skills workshops respective-ly.

WhileGeorgewas focusedmainlyongrow-ing the sport of wheelchair basketball whenhe conceptualised the tournament, the NY-DA hopes that the sport can become morethan just a pastime in the areas they havereached.

Makume Tlaleane, senior programme co-ordination at the NYDA, says they hope thenew clubs will grow the sport in their areasand use it as a way to effect social change.“We have provided life skills over the pastfour Saturdays that help them to contextual-ise sport and see the power of sport as a vehi-cle for community change,” says Tlaleane.

“We give them the life skills and GreaterBulls gives them the sports skills to go backto their community to interact with otherdisabled young people who can continue toplay sport and not look at the fact that theyare disabled as the end of life.”

The programme culminated in a tourna-ment at the Swartklip Sports Complex inTafelsig, Mitchell’s Plain on Saturday, inwhich all four clubs participated.

The funding for the new equipment wasprovided by the NYDA, the City of CapeTown provided catering and the venue, andthe Cultural Affairs and Sport assisted withcoordinating the event.
