Med’s the best!eAst oR west…

It’s the perfect time to head to the Mediterranean for a cruise. Get onboard now to beat the crowds and the heat!

directionless?East or west, which is best? Well the short answer is: it depends on what you’re looking for?

T he Eastern Med cruises typically incorporate the islands of Greece, Istanbul, Kusadasi and

Izmir in Turkey and the Adriatic coast of Italy and Croatia, while cruises in the Western Med could include stops in Portugal, Morocco, Spain, France and Italy with the odd Malta and Monte Carlo thrown in for good measure.

If you are looking for ancient history, fascinating culture or hidden treasures Eastern Med is your best bet.

Meanwhile, the Western Med is the obvious choice if you’re keen to capture as much European flavour as possible within a short period of time. Art and culture buffs, foodies and shoppers will all delight in the variety of attractions and activities on offer. Cruises in this region are often offered year-round.

BarcelonaRamble up La Rambla and into Spain’s delightful second-largest city, Barcelona. More than football and fashion, this city lays claim to a number of architectural tributes to the famed architect Antonio Gaudi, whose distinctively designed buildings have now become tourist attractions in their own right. Perhaps the most impressive of his works is that of La Sagrada Familia, which has been under construction since 1882. It is arguably the number one visited tourist attraction in the city although Gaudi admirers will also enjoy a visit to Park Guell, with its amazing stone structures including the Gaudi dragon fountain, and Casa Batlló, one of two buildings designed by Gaudi on Passeig de Gracia.

LondonLimited time to get through London? Why not try a different way of seeing one of the world’s greatest cities. The London Duck Tours are amphibious vehicles that take 30 passengers on a road and river adventure past London’s top attractions, including the London Eye, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square. A variety of tours are available including 30 minutes on the Thames River itself.

FlorenceMillions of tourists head to Florence every year to enjoy the city’s artistic and architectural heritage. So picturesque is this Italian city that it was listed by Forbes as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, veritably dotted with Renaissance monuments and architecture. Florence is also an Italian fashion hub ranking within the top 50 fashion capitals in the world. In addition to the monuments, galleries and museums, Florence also has several major squares piazza and streets; The most popular of which remains the Piazza della Repubblica, a square located in the city centre with lovely cafes from which to people watch, including Caffè Gilli and Paszkowski.

IstanbulThis city’s strategic position along the historic Silk Road to Europe and the Middle East has seen it positioned as the gateway between the West and East. History buffs will delight in the ancient legacy of Istanbul, which served as the capital of four empires for nearly 16 centuries. It is no surprise therefore that the city’s biggest draw card is its historic centre, a blend of modern and Byzantine and Ottoman architecture and partially listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Must visit highlights include Hagia Sofia, Topkapi Palace and the Column of Constantine erected in 330AD to mark the new Roman capital.

PragueArguably prettier than even Paris and the sixth most visited European city after London, Paris, Rome, Madrid and Berlin, this central European destination is the capital of the Czech Republic and home to a vast array of famous cultural attractions that survived 20th century conflicts. In addition to Prague Castle and Petrín Hill, there are the famous Old Town Square, Jewish Quarter and Charles Bridge, whose construction began in 1357 and which spans the Vltava River. In fact it was the only means of crossing the river until 1841. The city’s extensive historic centre is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

don’t for a second think a visit to dubai is just sand dunes and shopping. there’s plenty more to keep you occupied, whether you’re six or sixty!

Hit the slopes! Que? A ski resort in the desert? It’s worth a visit even if only to poke fun at the newbies who don’t know their après from their avalanche. Ski Dubai offers a range of activities for snow lovers, including skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing. The ski slopes have five runs that vary in difficulty, height and steepness and also boast the world’s first indoor black run - a run of 400 metres with a fall of over 60 metres. $50 pp (R445.00)

Splish splash I was taking a bath… Don those flip flops (or water wings if you’re so inclined) and head to Aquaventure Dubai, a 42-acre water park with rivers, tropical landscapes and its own private beach. $58 pp (R516.20)

Fish are friends… not food Check out Dubai’s Aquarium where you could enjoy a fish feeding experience (that’s you feeding the fish, not you eating the fish), the 48m-long Aquarium Tunnel stretching 11m underground and the underwater zoo. $25 pp (R222.50)

Dune bashing… Dubai style! Trained safari guides driving 4x4 vehicles take you through a thrilling journey through the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, deep into the heart of the desert. In addition to an amazing falconry show, there’s an Arabian Nights-style Bedouin dinner complete with camel rides, sand art, henna designers and hubbly bubblies. C andy-striped tuk tuks and swanky tailors; not really what one would immediately consider a match made in heaven, but strangely in Bangkok the two seem to be mutually

inclusive. And after your likely brush with both, Pentravel provides its top culinary picks that should definitely be on your agenda…

1. cooKing cLASS At BAipAi: 8/91 Ngam Wongwan Road, Soi 54 LadyaoAfter a few hours smelling the Bangkok’s delicious street food, travellers would do well to attempt their own version of Thai cuisine by attending a Thai cooking class at Baipai Thai Cooking School. Although the cooking school is located about 30 minutes from the CBD it has arrangements for free transfers from some of the city’s hotels and offers travellers the opportunity to learn authentic Thai dishes, culinary secrets, tips and tricks.

2. p Kitchen: Sukhumvit Soi 18A traditional open-air eatery with some of the best Thai food in Bangkok, P Kitchen is certainly nothing to look at. The restaurant serves up traditional dishes like Yam Pla Duk Foo (Crispy Catfish Green Mango Salad) and Kra Pao Gai (Thai Basil Chicken) at an inexpensive price and is it is certainly not a tourist trap.

3. the decK: 36-38 Soi Pratu Nok YoongLocated on the Chao Phraya River, The Deck by the River offers one of the most spectacular Bangkok views at sunset. Part of the Arun Residence, the restaurant serves lunches and dinners although the hotel’s rooftop bar is also a perfect spot for sundowners Although it serves lunches and dinners, the hotel’s rooftop bar (Amorosa) remains a wonderful spot for sundowners and vistas of Wat Arun, across the river.

Mauritius better bang for

your family buck

take the stress out of family travel and

consider an all-inclusive Beachcomber package for your next holiday…

Travel experts say all-inclusive packages are far better value for money for families as they relieve the pressure of added extras that are a fact of life when travelling with kids.

Although all-inclusive holidays are more expensive, they do guarantee a stress-free family holiday as parents no longer need to worry about the budget or count the number of drinks their child has had that day. It really is the only way to go when you’re travelling as a family.

Destinations like Mauritius remain firm favourites for all-inclusive family breaks. Children under the age of six are free on all-inclusive packages offered by Beachcomber Tours for instance and the rate applicable to children aged six to 17 years is also reduced.

Beachcomber has several optional, all-inclusive options available designed to cover all holiday essentials such as meals, drinks, mini-bar items and  picnic baskets if guests want to explore away from the hotel in addition to snacks throughout the day and also either pancakes each afternoon at Le Mauricia and Le Canonnier or high tea cakes and pastries at Le Victoria each afternoon.

All Beachcomber “all-inclusive” packages are available in all room categories and are available the moment guests arrive at the hotel until their departure. Furthermore they are combinable with Beachcomber Special Offers and come free for children below the age of six.

Choosing your all-inclusive experience• decide what time of the year suits the family best, then look at the activities that each trip offers and decide based on this.• Study the inclusions in the package and compare them with competitive products. even compare them between hotels in the group. then decide on the price range you wish to fall into and familiarise yourself with what you are getting for your money.

A ptly named Mosi oa Tunya (the smoke that thunders), Victoria Falls is just as impressive to see on the ground. A visit to the Victoria Falls National Park is an absolute must. Guests can walk through the rain

forests to strategically placed viewpoints of the falls. The spray is so strong one sometimes has to take out an umbrella to avoid being soaked to the skin.

But it is perhaps the destination’s river rafting experience that captures the attention of most. From boogie-boarding down the rapids to multi-day river rafting trips, there are a range of white water rafting programmes on offer throughout the year, promising not only a challenging adventure, but also magnificent scenery as travellers wind down the Batoka Gorge.

The Victoria Falls bridge separates Zambia and Zimbabwe and serves as a platform from which to embark on a range of activities, including a bungee jump, Bridge Swing and an historic Bridge Tour for those averse to the adrenalin rush.

Another memorable option is the sunset river cruise on the African Queen or African Princess, represented by Livingstone’s Adventure, allowing visitors unique insight into how nature interacts with the Zambezi’s waters. Crocodiles laze on river islets catching the last rays of a river sunset, elephant and hippo enjoy a cool bath along the river bank, without so much as a second glance at the river boats that glide up and down this great river.

And then there are the helicopter flips. There’s something incredible about gazing from the air at a magnificent torrent of water cascading over 100m and stretching over 1,7km.

To end the evening off, there’s the traditional African dinner at the renowned Victoria Falls Safari Lodge’s Boma restaurant.

Victoria Falls ranks among the most-visited natural attractions in Africa…

Local cruise hoLiDays... gain popularity among families

S outh African families are increasingly opting for cruise holidays because parents feel secure that their family will be safe on their holiday. This is the one time parents are completely comfortable that

their children are being looked after and entertained, which of course means parents can really enjoy their time off.

For families, a cruise represents time together, or apart, in a secure, safe environment.

sydney HARbouRSydney Harbour is a sea of yachts, ferries and motorboats so a scenic cruise departing from Circular Quay or Darling Harbour should unquestionably be on the tourist agenda. There’s also the option of chartering a yacht from EastSail and sailing around Sydney Harbour.

Culture and history buffs will enjoy a trip to the Sydney Harbour islands of Fort Denison, Shark, Clark, Rodd, Goat and Cockatoo; the latter being listed as one of 11 Convict Sites on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.

CHInAtownSydney’s Chinatown is what one would expect from an Asian-infused city experience, except this one offers Asia with a twist!

Expect just a taste of Spanish culture to complement the colourful Asian extravaganza as the 80m-long Spanish Quarter is located alongside this precinct.

Noodle bars, food halls and quirky gift shops jostle for their place of pride alongside paella-serving restaurants and Spanish dancing.

« tHe RoCKs And CIRCulAR QuAyCobbled lanes and courtyards dotted with shops, pubs and restaurants, The Rocks, and its 19th century converted buildings, are a hub for tourists wanting to explore the city’s convict history.

This was the spot at which 1 400 men, women and children arrived in 1 788 and provides interesting insights into Australia’s history.

Discoverer adventure...

I t’s time to embrace the heartland of America’s west, from Red Rock Country in Sedona, to glamorous Las Vegas and the luscious vineyards of Napa Valley.

After arriving in Los Angeles, you will be taken on a trip south along the Pacific to San Diego for a guided tour through the Victorian Gaslamp Quarter and Old Town.

Next stop is the Sonoran Desert and Scottsdale, Arizona, followed by a visit to the Coconino National Forest en route to the artists’ enclave of Sedona. Particular highlights are the towering red cliffs and crystal pools of Oak Creek Canyon.

A trip to the west would not be complete without a visit to the magnificent Grand Canyon and Utah’s Lake Powell. Spend some time admiring the amazing rainbow-like rock formations at Bryce Canyon National Park, home to the highest concentration of hoodoos worldwide.

Head on to Zion National Park to marvel at the graceful slot canyons, towering cliffs and monoliths before preparing mind, body and soul for the glitz and glamour of Sin City, Las Vegas.

Travel through the Mojave Desert towards Mammoth Lakes on the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada, and then on through the stunning Tioga Pass into Yosemite Valley passing through Bridal Veil and Yosemite Falls.

Then it’s time to head north to Sonoma where you’ll visit a family owned winery for an exclusive tour and wine tasting, as well as sample olive oils and estate-produced wines.

Travel through Napas scenic wine country before crossing the Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco to see such highlights as Fisherman’s Wharf.

Head south to the Old Mission in San Juan Bautista where you can step back in time to the Mission era. In the quaint village of Carmel-by-the-Sea, browse the shops, wander down to the water’s edge or savour a cappuccino at a café. After cruising the beautiful 17-Mile Drive past the famed Lone Cypress Tree and Pebble Beach Golf Links, arrive in Monterey for the night.

Travel south down the coast on your way to Hearst Castle, once the home of one of America’s most powerful men. After a guided tour of his fabulous residence, continue to sun-kissed Santa Barbara with its golden beaches and elegant Spanish Revival buildings.

Last stop on the agenda is fabulous Hollywood to see its landmark sign, the Walk of Fame and finally, Grauman’s Chinese Theater.

And now its time to hang up that hat Partner and head back home, having conquered the Wild Wild West…

HIt tHe slopes… or Schnapps

First-time skiers take heart! though Austria, Switzerland, italy and France may offer an overwhelming array of ski resorts and experiences, pentravel is on hand to guide you to the one that suits your needs…

The first thing you’ll learn when heading to Europe’s Alps is that not all mountains are created equal.

Stretching from Austria in the east to France in the west, Alpine skiing offers various experiences, at

a range of prices, as the altitude rises from east to west.Something key to remember when selecting your ski

holiday is that the higher the resort, the more expensive the package. This is because the higher-located resorts offer a better chance of guaranteed snow.

It stands to reason then that if you’re a beginner, Austria is the obvious choice. The resorts are located at a lower altitude, are cheaper, and have a distinct family feel about them, not to

mention the après-ski drinking and dancing if you’re footloose and fancy-free. What’s more, the resorts in Austria form a key part of the quaint villages in which they’re located. Picture wooden chalets with snow-clad roofs!

Seasoned skiers on the other hand will love the French resorts, and especially all-inclusive Club Med experiences, because they provide value-for-money in an expensive ski area and are generally snow-sure. The scale of inter-linked terrain means it almost impossible to get bored of skiing in a large French ski resort.

Meanwhile, Pure Skiing’s personal touch in their resorts will appeal to the novice and intermediate skier alike.
