Charting your cruising courseIf you thought cruises were the preserve of the wealthy, famous or blue-rinse brigade, think again! Today’s modern cruise liners cater for absolutely every age group and every interest at prices that will suit your pocket. We’re pleased to share some incredible cruise options we just know will float your boat…

time to trade in that tux and don a pair of flip-flops! The past decade has seen a revolution in the type of cruise holidays available.

The image of cruising being too expensive, too formal and generally only for old people has changed.

Today cruising is one of the fastest-growing forms of tourism in the world. Why? It’s easy, exciting, flexible and what’s more, exceptional value for money!

See a multitude of destinations with only ever having to unpack your bag once. Your resort moves with you to your next

destination, wining, dining and entertaining you the whole way.And if you’re worried you’ll have nothing to do at sea,

your floating holiday resort will banish the boredom with everything from on-board casinos and rollerblading rinks to flower-arranging lessons and wine tasting. There are even climbing walls and zip-lines!

Of course, if you’d prefer to pile on a few holiday pounds, there’s all-day dining and drinking in a variety of restaurants and bars. In fact, on some ships you can dine in a different restaurant and sip cocktails in a different bar every night over a seven-day cruise.

For families, a cruise represents time together, or apart, in a secure, safe environment. The young to young-at-heart are catered for with such facilities as computer arcades, surf simulators, ice-skating rinks and even nightclubs. Professional minders in fully equipped childcare centres ensure peace of mind throughout your cruise holiday.

Pentravel brings you a superb range of worldwide sea, river and lake cruises with our partners. We recommend them unreservedly and will help you select the cruise that’s right for you, at the best price. We can also advise you on and book other aspects of your itinerary, including flights, hotel accommodation, transfers, tours and car hire if required.

Connect with the warmth and beauty of the Mediterranean, a region with fascinating history and profound culture…

arguably Europe’s most popular cruising destination, a cruise through the Mediterranean offers the opportunity to experience some of the Western World’s most treasured historic and cultural hotspots.

Images of golden Greek island sands and peaceful Turkish fishing villages give way to Arab souks in Tunis and flamenco dancing in Barcelona. Your Med cruise will bring history and culture to life.

Most of our cruises are one-week long, covering either the western or eastern Med with the main seasons for cruising being from March to October, although cruises are available year-round.

The western Mediterranean itineraries extend from Italy, France and Spain to North Africa and even the Canary Islands, with such destinations as Barcelona, Tangiers, Monte Carlo, Nice and Florence popular ports of call.

Greece, Turkey, Italy and the Adriatic are destinations passengers selecting the eastern Mediterranean itineraries can look forward to, with Venice, Athens, Istanbul and the Greek and Turkish islands included in various itineraries.

Extended Mediterranean cruises span over 14 days and generally cover most of the destinations in the east and west itineraries. Popular departure ports include Barcelona, Monte Carlo, Rome (Civitavecchia), Venice, Athens and Istanbul. Many cruises also finish in the UK with Southampton being the major port.

Rain or shine?Although the northern hemisphere summer is the traditional season for Mediterranean cruises, winter itineraries are becoming increasingly popular because tourist attractions are less busy. If you travel during summer, bring a large hat and lather up. It gets very warm!

Save some for next timeBecause the variety of experiences offered by Mediterranean cruise destinations is so immense, focus on a few areas you absolutely want to see and book a cruise that covers that area. Don’t try to see everything on one trip!

From Aruba to Cuba, the Caribbean and its 7 000 islands have long been the fly-and-flop holiday destination for sun-starved North Americans seeking a quick break.

You may think that once you’ve seen one gorgeous island, you’ve seen them all, but in reality each of the Caribbean islands have their own unique soul and flavour; a good thing as most six-day itinerary cruises allow you to spend three days at sea and the other three days on-shore exploring these breathtaking islands.

But don’t for a minute think you’re in for a quiet, reflective time on board. Caribbean cruises are perhaps best known for being fun-filled, magical expeditions, crammed with crazy activities and plenty of opportunities to party. It’s all about offering a floating playground that keeps your sea legs pumping and your endorphins flowing.

Popular Caribbean destinations include the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, The Virgin Islands, Grand Cayman, Jamaica and Trinidad, with popular departure ports including Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, New Orleans, Galveston, San Juan (Puerto Rico), Los Angeles and San Diego. Cruises operate year-round.

Extending to Mexico is easy as several cruise lines combine their Caribbean cruises with calls to one or more of the Mexican ports in the Gulf.

PentRaVel tiPFor South africans Miami is a popular departure port, easily allowing travellers to combine a holiday in Florida, including a trip to Walt Disney World, with a Caribbean cruise. Special “Holiday airfares” are available to Florida. these airfares may permit you to stop over en-route to your destination. ask us for expert advise and pricing

Head east, west or south? Most of our Caribbean cruises offer itineraries covering the eastern, western and southern regions. For at-sea days, select the eastern Caribbean itineraries that often have as their ports of call St. Thomas, St. Maarten and San Juan. Western Caribbean itineraries are a great option for snorkellers and scuba divers, stopping at such ports as Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel, while Southern Caribbean cruises generally offer a wider variety of island stops and are therefore slightly longer, stopping in Antigua, Aruba, Barbados, Curaçao, Martinique and St. Lucia, among others.

take to the Caribbean waves! There can be few images quite as glam as the turquoise waters and powdery white sands of the Caribbean. And it’s certainly a popular image, as it remains the world’s most popular cruising destination…

culture of the Far East, we believe cruising is an incredibly exciting and value-for-money way to discover this complex destination.

It’s a region that will tickle every sensibility. From gold temples to golden beaches, the colourful sights, sounds and smells in bustling Asian cities like Singapore and Hong Kong effortlessly give way to a more tranquil, earthy existence.

Cruise lines are fast realising the potential the Far East holds for cruising and are basing themselves in destinations like Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Cambodia, China and Japan, offering itineraries that span from a short three-day expedition to grand voyages of up to two weeks.

Most of our cruises focus on specific areas within the Far East, such as Southeast Asia, Japan and eastern China or the South China Sea. Typical departure ports include Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Osaka. Each sailing visits several countries, each with its own distinctive culture. Special “Holiday Airfares” are available to these destinations to join these cruises.

Local cruising with MSC Starlight Cruises

the 2012/2013 season will be a memorable one for both MSC Starlight Cruises and its passengers, as the cruise line will be operating two cruise ships in South African waters during this period. Both ships will bring

elegance and glamour to South African guests, offering select new cruise destinations as part of their 2012/2013 itineraries.

The MSC Opera will arrive in Cape Town on November 20 and will proceed to Durban to be based there for the summer

season, operating three- and four-night cruises to Maputo, Portuguese Island and Barra Lodge in Mozambique.

For its Christmas Cruise, the MSC Opera is heading from Portuguese Island to the beach village of Anakoa in Madagascar, a port known for its diving, fishing and surfing, while an 11-night festive New Year cruise sees passengers celebrate New Year’s Eve under Réunion skies. The ship arrives in Mauritius on New Year’s Day and will remain in port for three nights.

It’s sister ship, the MSC Sinfonia will arrive back in South Africa on November 28 to operate cruises to Mossel Bay, Hermanus, Walvis Bay, Lüderitz, and, for the first time, an 11-night round-trip cruise to Walvis Bay and St Helena.

St Helena is one of the most isolated islands in the world and used to serve as an important rendezvous point and source of food for ships that were travelling from Asia en route to Europe. French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled to, and is buried on, the island.

The ship will take over the Portuguese Island, Maputo and Barra Lodge cruises from the MSC Opera from February to April, as well as add Anakoa (Madagascar) in its seven-night cruise scheduled to depart on March 25, 2013.

A long cruise is scheduled to Mauritius, Réunion and Ile St Marie in Madagascar on February 6 as well as 18- and 19-night itineraries from Venice or Genoa to the Cape with calls at Valencia, Toulon, Lisbon, the Canary Islands and Walvis Bay.

For most South Africans, Scandinavia seems a fairly remote destination. But for those drawn to the allure of magnifi cent fjords, Viking legends and cosmopolitan cities, a cruise really is the most value-for-money,

easily accessible way to experience this destination. From picture-perfect coastlines, islands and archipelagos

to towering, snow-capped mountains, quaint villages and dramatic narrow straits, cruising in Scandinavia takes on an element of the spectacular. Journey to the top of the world as you glide through two millennia of history that spans the Vikings, Teutonic knights and Russian czars.

Norwegian fjords, city stops in Denmark’s charismatic Copenhagen and neoclassical Helsinki, visits to Iceland’s volcanoes and hot mineral-rich springs are just some of the highlights to which Scandinavia-bound cruise passengers can look forward.

Cruises to Scandinavian destinations and the Baltics generally start from Copenhagen and Stockholm and are about seven days long, although there are also departures from Southampton (UK) and Amsterdam (The Netherlands) with longer sailings of 14 days or more.

SHIPSHAPE ScandinaviaYou may think it’s all saunas and ski-boots in scintillating Scandinavia, but exploring this traditional winter wonderland’s steamy summers on a cruise can be just as rewarding…

DiD YOU KnOW?expect longer than average time spent in ports as Scandinavian cities are generally located close to one another. that means plenty of time to go exploring. excursions can range from visits to tallinn’s Old town and the tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen to the incredible imperial palaces and parks of Saint Petersburg. Wild and untamed, South America and the Antarctic are certainly an attractive option for the explorer at heart.

Colourful, chaotic cities, ancient historical sites and astonishing natural beauty and unique bird, plant and animal life characterise the South American continent.

Combine this with one of the world’s last wilderness areas, the Antarctic, and you have a veritable once-in-a-lifetime journey of discovery. What’s more is that you don’t need to be Bear Grylls to enjoy it. Cruise lines often combine the two destinations in their cruise programmes, ensuring your expedition to the end of the earth is not only a memorable one, but a comfortable one too.

Now is the time to don that parka however. Cruise lines are increasingly required to adhere to strict environmental regulations as global warming affects the region’s ice content that makes this area so dramatic.

Glaciers and icebergs provide a spectacular backdrop to colonies of penguins and lone polar bears, giving you a first-hand look at one of the world’s remotest areas most of us are never likely to see, except in photographs.

Cruises to South America and the Antarctic sail in the same season, the polar summer, between October and March when the weather is at its mildest. Larger ships tend to depart from Buenos Aires or Valparaiso and include an Antarctic experience within their “round the horn” cruise. South America-only cruises are also available and generally call at such destinations as Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and Montevideo.

PentRaVel tiPChoose your cruise carefully. the larger cruise ships, while perhaps offering more comfort and entertainment, may not be able to access some of the areas smaller ships can, permitting disembarkation on to the antarctic islands and the continent itself. these ships are specially equipped to deal with the conditions.

DuESouthThe adventurer in you will delight in the rugged, uninhibited spirit of South America and the Antarctic. But there’s no need to rough it, you can see it in cruising style…

Cape Town is the centre of South Africa’s cruise universe this season with three international cruise lines in particular selecting it as a start or end port of call.

Silversea Cruise’s newest ship, the Silver Whisper, leaves Cape Town bound for the Caribbean on a 26-night itinerary that takes passengers along the west coast of Africa, across the Atlantic and to Ft Lauderdale via the Caribbean ports of Bridgetown, Roseau and St Thomas.

Launched in 2001, the Silver Whisper promises the ultimate in intimate Italian cruising, six-star service and world-class cuisine. Onboard facilities range from four restaurants, a pool and beauty salon to a casino, duty-free boutiques, a fi tness centre and onboard library.

The sleek and sophisticated MS Blackwatch heads from Southampton (UK) to Cape Town in January 2013. Home to some 804 passengers on each cruise, the Black Watch has 423 cabins, four restaurant/bar areas, a fi tness centre, library, spa and golf facilities, among others.

Promising old-fashioned elegance combined with the best of modern home comforts, the four-star MSC Opera is the perfect way to sample Mediterranean hospitality en route to Cape Town. Departing November 1 from Venice, the MSC Operawill spend 19 days leisurely making her way, and yours, to the southern tip of Africa calling at such ports as Valletta (Malta), Palma de Mallorca (Spain), Casablanca (Morocco), Dakar (Senegal) and Walvis Bay (Namibia).

Passengers have a truly authentic Italian experience to look forward to: enjoy an espresso at the coffee bar, indulge in a typical handmade Italian treat at the ice cream bar or even learn to parle Italiano. Onshore excursions take on a different dimension with visits to Marrakech to see the Saadian Kings, or Fez, arguably the most authentic imperial city in Morocco. If it’s more history you’re after, don’t miss the shore excursion to Gorée Island to visit the House of the Slaves. And for the adventurer a quad-biking experience in the dunes between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund is simply a must on the itinerary before reaching Cape Town.
