Heat Transfer Methods Spray Thermal Insulation System
Eco Construction Chemicals
Heat transfers in three ways:
1.Conduction
2.Convection
3.Radiation
Heat travels through a “material”
 Conduction
Heat travels through
a “liquid” or a “gas”
particle
 Convection
Radiation requires NO particles to travel

So, how does heat energy reach the
Earth from the Sun?
There are no particles between the
Sun and the Earth so it CANNOT
travel by conduction or by convection.

Q1: Which is the best surface for reflecting heat
radiation?
Shiny white Dull white Dull black Shiny black
Q2: Which is the best surface for absorbing heat
radiation?
Q1 Q2
That’s why houses are painted white in hot countries...
White reflects heat radiation and keeps the house cooler.
This is a list of approximate
values of thermal conductivity,
“K” value, for some common
materials.
The lower the K-
value the better the
thermal insulating
properties.

Which is the best surface for reflecting heat
radiation and has lower emittance?
That’s why shiny foil blankets are wrapped around marathon
runners at the end of a race...
The shiny metal reflects the heat radiation from the runner
back in, this stops the runner getting cold.

K-Value, R-Value & U-Value Spray Thermal Insulation System
Eco Construction Chemicals
1. Thermal Conductivity (K-Value)
The ability of a material to transmit heat is measured by its
thermal conductivity or K-value. It is expressed in W/(m°K)
K-value = 0.0272 W/(m°K)
2. Thermal Resistance (R-Value)
The thermal resistance of a material or construction is the
reciprocal of its thermal conductance. It is expressed in
m2°K/W and is given by:
R =
Where L is the thickness of the material.

3. Thermal Transmittance (U-Value)
The thermal transmittance or U-value of a construction is
defined as the quantity of heat that flows through a unit
area of a building section under steady-state conditions in
unit time per temperature difference of the air on either
side of the section. It is expressed in W/(m2°K) and is
given by:
U =
Where RT is the total thermal resistance.
The higher the R, the lower the U, the better.
