the Difference
TIM ROBINSON, AG GENERAL MANAGER
thefrom here
After wrapping up the fifth in a series of client Knotter Clinics for the 2014 growing season, I reflect back on the past seasons spent in the business
of production agriculture. To say there has been some change would be a true understatement.
• In 1977, I was first introduced to the art of tromping cotton (pre-module builders). There were close to 650,000 acres of cotton in the state of Arizona with over 200 gin sites marked on the map. Alfalfa was being produced in a much lesser quantity throughout isolated areas, and the definition of a large bale was something put up like a loaf of bread by a Hesston Stack Hand.
• Durum wheat and barley were being harvested for the first time with an axial flow combine and the switch was on from a seventeen and half foot header to a twenty footer. Corn was either cut or chopped at 3 miles per hour, which was considered a big bite. We hauled our grain or silage in gasoline-powered single axle dump trucks pulling a pup, all 20,000 pounds a trip.
• Guidance was picking out a mountaintop or cactus in the way distance and holding a straight line with a death grip on a steering wheel. Weed control was through tractor cultivation, hand hoeing and supplemented by three classmates riding on the front of a Farmall M spot spraying late season regrowth.
• A big dairy had 1,000 cows and they were fed with a fancy horizontal mixer. Feedlots had black, brown or white cattle and almost every animal was fed from locally produced grains. A mobile telephone was a big handset bolted to the floor of a pickup truck with 20 total channels available for several hundred users vying for an opportunity to dial out.
While change is supposedly always imminent, there are some constants as well. Will Rogers was the first to be quoted saying something along the lines of “Buy land. They ain't making any more of the stuff.” This statement rings very true for Ag ground and especially so in the desert southwest where land and water are legally intertwined. We only have so many acres to farm or ranch and what we have today is all we are going to have tomorrow, less whatever we take out to plant buildings upon.
Our challenge as production agriculturists has always been to produce more with less. The history of the American farmer proves that we are completely capable of meeting this challenge head on. Going forward, we are going to be pressed to grow more on less land with less water, a fact most in the west have begun to contend with. Therefore, it will become our absolute duty to maximize production from every square foot of tillable and irrigable land as possible.
The agricultural team at Empire Southwest is constantly looking for newer and better ways to help our partners to maximize productivity. We see it as a common goal to help steadily increase yields while decreasing input costs. Together, we are committed to overcome any obstacles that may be standing in the way of western agricultural efforts to sustain our status as top quality producers of food and fiber to feed, clothe and supply the population’s needs for specialty crops.

No matter what your tillage goal is — residue management, seedbed preparation or preparing for the next crop in a rotation — a properly adjusted
and properly used tillage implement will result in fewer trips to the field, better management of the quality and performance of the next crop, and hopefully lower potential erosion.
Properly pair the tractor and tillage tool. Size does matter, so don’t overpower the tool. A general rule is 8 to 10 HP per foot to pull a tandem disc harrow at 5 to 6 mph. While the design of some tillage tools allows faster ground speeds, going too fast is an easy way to create ridges and furrows. It also can cause tillage tools to bounce, producing an inconsistent tillage depth.
Adjusting the tongue to match drawbar height is important to keep the tillage tool level and moving smoothly through the field, optimizing fuel use and minimizing wear on parts such as the drawbar, level lift assembly and other components that can receive unneeded down pressure if the tool is operated either nose down or tail down. A straight line of draft to the tool is the goal.
Purge air from the hydraulic lines to ensure the wings stay level with the machine’s center section. With the implement’s hydraulics connected to the tractor, simply raise and lower the implement several times to allow the system to cycle fully. Because air is more easily compressed than oil, air in the hydraulic lines can allow the wings to sag.
Level the tool from side to side and from front to back to ensure it will work the soil at a consistent, even depth, without gouging or ridging. Keeping the tool level also helps optimize fuel efficiency, reduces wear on the implement, and allows the machine to handle crop residue with less bunching or plugging. Wings and center frames should operate at the same height from side to side. To check these, lower the tool to the ground, stopping the descent when the disc blades are close to the soil but not touching it. Use a tape to measure the distance from the
bottom of the frame to the center of the pivot pin on the walking tandem or the top of the wheel spindle if a single or dual wheel is present. The measurements should be the same. Always check the center-section wheels left and right to ensure the integrity of the center lift assembly. Using this same method, set the wings at identical depths by measuring from the bottom of the frame to the top of the wheel spindle or pivot pin of the walking tandem (as shown). If the wheels on the wings are smaller than the main transport wheels, adjust your measurements accordingly.
Adjust the fore/aft level so the front and rear blades are of equal distance from the ground. This is a preliminary adjustment. Once in the field, confirm the fore/aft level after traveling several hundred feet with the tool lowered in the working position. Check the soil at the center rear of the tool where the soil is returned by the rear gangs. A tool that is level front to rear will produce a complete and level fill of the valley cut by the front gangs. If soil forms a valley, the rear of the tool needs to be lowered. If a ridge is present, the rear of the tool is too deep, and the tool should be adjusted to lower the front of the machine.

Set the tillage depth to your field conditions and the job at hand. A general rule of thumb for tillage depth of an implement such as a disc harrow is 25 percent of the blade diameter. Thus, a disc harrow with 24-inch blades should be set to till no more than 6 inches deep. Implements such as Sunflower disc harrows have a single-point depth control with a convenient hand crank that adjusts the depth in one-half-inch increments each time the handle is rotated one turn.
Follow these steps to achieve the maximum depth of a disc harrow: Operate the tool with the wheels fully retracted; yes, tires off the ground. Stop after working the soil for a few hundred feet and allowing the disc to achieve maximum depth. Lower the wheels until the tool’s frame begins to lift. At this point, release the valve stopping the ascent of the frame, and stop the tractor but leave the tool in the ground. Adjust the single-point depth-control crank until the striker plate contacts the hydraulic poppet valve. Raise the tool until the audible click of the poppet valve engages, which stops the oil flow. The implement’s maximum depth is now set and control of the tool is retained.
Gauge wheels are especially important on flexible tillage tools to prevent front-wing corners from gouging. When set correctly, these wheels should move slightly side-to-side when kicked. A tape measure can be used to ensure the setting for both gauge wheels is consistent. The gauge wheel adjustment is the final step in the field adjustment process.

SERVICE CORNER
Thanks to the more than 400 professional growers who attended the Knotter Clinics in February and March. The clinics, held at five Empire agriculture locations, were part
of the ongoing effort to support grower productivity throughout the year and featured both English and Spanish walk-a-rounds on windrowers, large square balers and small square balers.
The attendees also participated in a classroom style baler maintenance technical training and received a certificate of completion following a test on common knotter maintenance points, including miss ties.
Clinic participants discussed various techniques for producing high quality bales from start to finish. Display booths showcased products from event partners Empire Fluids lab, AGCO Parts and Sitech GPS and guidance options.
Attendees heard the latest safety information and reviewed maintenance scheduling, field adjustments and machine maintenance settings. They also enjoyed Cooper’s world famous BBQ brisket, grilled chicken, beans and much more for lunch. Door prize winners from each location received gift cards, and the grand prize was an AGCO toolbox valued at $700!
“These clinics are an important way to stay connected with our clients and offer our complete support in their harvesting needs,” said Tim Robinson, general manager of Empire Agriculture.

Sun Valley Hay was established over 20 years ago in Imperial Valley, CA by Clay and Diane Williams. The business has kept the Williams family and its
employees in motion all year round covering various types of grass harvesting. They harvest in excess of 20,000 acres for 20 different businesses. Alfalfa, Bermuda, Sudan and Klien grass is part of their primary harvest.
Clay and Diane’s talent and passion enabled them to grow the modest business into the thriving Sun Valley Hay of today, and their customers are more than business associates, they are often close friends. When Clay passed away in 2009, his wife Diane knew what she needed to do for her children, Ciara and Carson, as well as her employees.
"We treat each other like a tight knit family, as we are dependent on each other for success and continued employment. My foreman, Ubaldo Garcia, has been a huge plus, as he is so bright, dedicated and easy to work with. Setting an example for my kids by going forward when tragedy strikes is my job as a parent. Continuing to provide jobs to the best group of men in the industry is my duty as an employer. Putting up quality hay for the finest farmers in the Imperial Valley is my privilege as a business owner,“ says Diane.
What is most important to Diane right now is staying number one, and making sure Sun Valley Hay is always the best harvesting company in the valley. She continues to purchase and maintain all her equipment through
Empire Southwest, so that she never has to give customers an excuse for not being ready.
Diane is also a proud partner of Uprise Energy, which focuses on wind technology, a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of Pioneers Memorial Hospital, Imperial Valley Stockmen’s Club, and the Farm Bureau. She continues leading her employees of over 20 years by providing the best service to her dedicated customers.
In her rare spare time, she enjoys playing Bunco, camping in the desert, and going to the beach.
I give Diane a lot of credit for taking their company after her husband passed away unexpectedly and running with it. She took what they had built together and kept going not only for herself and her children, but for all the employees that worked for them. I give her employees a lot of credit for their loyalty to Clay and Diane to stay with her through the transition. She has placed a lot of confidence in Empire to provide her with quality machinery, parts and service in a demanding business.

the shoulder) you can spritz with apple juice. This is usually 5-6 hours into the cook. Try not to spritz any more than once every 45 mins so you don’t slow down the cooking process.
Once the shoulder has reached 165 degrees internal temperature, take off the cooker and place on a double layer of HD Aluminum foil. Add more juice (1/4 Cup) and
shake some more rub and brown sugar over it. Cover and wrap tightly in the foil and place back in cooker. After another couple hours, check internal temperature. Once the roast hits 195 degrees internal temp, it is done. Make sure the probe slides through the roast with ease. This is how you will know it’s done.
Once it’s off the cooker, keep the shoulder wrapped in foil, and place in your oven or microwave (off) or even a cooler with a towel below it to rest for an hour minimum. This is a good time to get your sauce ready to your taste preference.
After an hour, begin pulling the meat from the shoulder. The bone should come out clean (this is a trophy for your hard work). Place pulled meat into a large bowl or disposable aluminum pan and add some of the BBQ sauce to your preference. Serve and enjoy!
INGREDIENTS:• 9-11 lbs bone-in Pork Shoulder (Boston Butt) • BBQ Rub*• Maple Syrup• Heavy Duty Aluminum Foil• Spray Bottle• Apple Juice• Brown Sugar• BBQ Sauce: KC Style BBQ sauce (thinned out with a
splash of apple juice and a shake of Louisiana style hot sauce)
• Meat Thermometer
RECIPE INSTRUCTIONSPork Shoulder (Boston Butt) is a great roast that is very forgiving. I prefer smoking these at 250 degrees. Rule of thumb is 1.25 hours per pound. But always remember to cook by temperature, not by time for safety reasons.
Prior to cooking, remove pork shoulder from cryovac and rinse. I prefer natural pork, not the shoulders that say ‘injected w/ a solution’ on the wrapper. Rub maple syrup (approximately 2TBS) all over the shoulder. This will hold the rub on throughout the cook. Evenly shake the BBQ rub liberally over the shoulder. Don’t be shy here, this is a lot of meat once pulled. Let rub set on surface until it appears wet. Triple wrap the shoulder in plastic wrap tightly, and put in the fridge for a minimum of 3 hours. I usually do this the night before cooking.
Preheat cooker to 250 degrees. Remove shoulder from fridge and let sit at room temp for 30 minutes before putting on the smoker. I also like to dust a little more brown sugar and rub over it just before it goes on.
Place shoulder on the cooker fat-cap down. Do your best to leave the lid on for as long as possible. After the rub has ‘set’ (rub doesn’t come off when you touch

Baling tips
Bale quality begins in the windrow. This is particularly true with round balers. If possible, make the windrow as wide or
slightly wider than the baler pickup. This allows the crop to feed evenly across the full width of the bale. If it’s not possible to make the windrow the same width as the pickup, make it less than half the pickup width so the operator can weave from one side to the other. Otherwise, the pickup will feed part of the crop into the center of the baler, which will result in a bale that is barrel-shaped or thicker in the middle than the ends.
Avoid baling when hay moisture is too low or too high to reduce leaf shatter and nutrient losses. “We chase moisture all the time,” says Reuben Wood, a custom baler who runs six Hesston® by Massey Ferguson 4690 small square balers and two MF2170 XD large square balers. In arid Arizona where Wood operates, chasing moisture means little sleep and good headlights. “Usually, it hits 15% between 3 and 5 a.m. We may work all day and have to leave for the next farm at 10 at night. That’s seven days a week.”
Lawrence Drost, who uses two MF2170 models to annually bale about 42,000 bales of irrigated alfalfa, wheat straw and cornstalks near Hartley, Texas, says he remotely checks a humidity meter at each pivot location before he even heads to the field. Then, when the air humidity gets to around 50 to 55%, he physically checks the hay moisture himself before calling in the baling crew.
Drost says he generally starts baling at about 13% at night when the dew comes on, and quits in the morning at about 11 or 12% as the dew goes off. “Sometimes we’ll add a little preservative with the HayBoss™ system right as we’re starting or right when we’re finishing,
just to extend the window,” he says, noting that such an application allows baling high-quality hay in a wider moisture range.
“Quite often, I’ll also split a field,” Drost adds. “That’s particularly true when there is something like irrigated corn on one side of a pivot circle that holds in the humidity. By the time we finish one side, that side will usually have dried enough to bale it.”
Set the hay pickup height so the pickup follows the contour of the ground at or just above the tine height setting. If the tines aren’t digging into the dirt, the flotation setting is about right. Meanwhile, pickup flotation springs should be adjusted to where the load on the pickup wheel is at a minimum, but not allowing the pickup to bounce and leave crop in the field.
When necessary, set the pickup wheel lower to provide more clearance in rocky or uneven field conditions. Because of the abrasive nature of corn stubble and wheat straw, Ray Lynn Campbell, a custom baler from Maypearl, Texas, says he doesn’t run pickup teeth any lower than necessary. In fact, he says he usually drops the gauge wheels down when baling both wheat straw and stover to keep contact with residue to a minimum.
Match ground speed and power takeoff speed when baling with a round baler so the chamber is filled as quickly as the pickup allows. Keep the machine as full as possible at all times. The fewer times the bale rolls in the baler, the lower the amount of leaf loss.
Quality Hayfor
No matter their size and shape, making high-quality bales that preserve hay quality boils down to following a few guidelines.

Follow drive directional arrows on the baler monitor to make sure hay is fed consistently across the width of the bale chamber so bales have square shoulders. This is particularly important with round bales as it helps them shed moisture; but it also improves stacking attributes of square bales.
Monitor bale density. Even if your baler has a density gauge, it is still critical to get out of the cab and “thump” bales to verify that the density is high enough so bales hold their shape and provide maximum protection from the elements.
As Drost relates, “We try to get as dense of a bale as we can, but the drier the hay, the higher the pressure on the baler. So we try to find a happy medium when we’re baling.
“At the same time, we’ve learned to judge the moisture on kind of a three-way gauge. First, we go by the HayBoss monitor on the baler, which is almost dead on to any manual probe. Secondly, we go by the bale pressure; and third, since we added the scale package to one of the balers, we go by bale weight. We know the rough parameters of what a bale should weigh.”
Campbell, meanwhile, says he tries to get straw bales and corn stover bales as tight as possible. “If I kick one out and it pops the twine, I obviously back off on the pressure, but I try to keep it right on the edge.”
Keep up to date on regular maintenance. Campbell either trades balers every year or completely rebuilds his machine in the off-season to ensure peak performance. While some of the maintenance is done by Livingston Machinery Co., his Hesston by Massey Ferguson dealer in Chickasha, Okla., Campbell does much of the work himself, using only genuine AGCO parts.
“I’ve never used anything but replacement parts from the dealership,” says Campbell. “So I don’t have any experience with anything else.”
When assessing moisture before baling, consider whether it is stem moisture or moisture from dew.
The moisture present from dew will seep through the hay to some degree, while stem moisture will not. When the stem moisture is too high, spoilage can occur.
Moisture LimitsWhen not using a hay preservative system, moisture should be no greater than 12 to 15% for large square bales; for round bales, no greater than 16 to 20%; and no greater than 18 to 20% for small square bales. Keep in mind that large square bales have greater density than other types of bales, hence the difference in allowable moisture.
