Magnanimous Musings of Fr. John Robert Skeldon

By the time this is read, the Holy Father Pope Francis will have issued his new

encyclical Laudato Si’ (Praised Be You, O Lord). The title comes from St. Francis of

Assisi’s Canticle of Creation which is a prayer of praise to God for nature and creation.

All of creation, including the sun, earth, moon, wind, rain, fire, stars, even death, is

referred to in familial and intimate terms of brother and sister. St. Francis wants to be

intimately connected to all of creation, and his papal namesake Pope Francis wants all of humanity to know their inter-

connectedness and relationship to “our common home”… Earth.

This most authoritative form of papal teaching—an encyclical letter—is liable to cause waves, which is some-

times good. Sometimes we need to be awakened, roused up, shaken up. The disciples certainly were shaken up in the

boat in this Sunday’s gospel passage, and Jesus himself was stirred from sleep. As Pope Francis did with his apostolic

exhortation Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel), so he will do with his encyclical letter Laudato Si’ (Praised Be

You, O Lord).

This gospel text is multivalent on several levels. I already referenced one of the ways above. Another way of

interpreting this passage is as a summons to rouse the sleeping Christ within us. This is how the great St. Augustine

did it. He saw the violent storm and the crashing waves as a symbol of the temptations that can drown all of humanity,

all of us. The tempest of temptations. He writes: “A temptation arises: it is the wind. It disturbs you: it is the surging

of the sea. This is the moment to awaken Christ and let him remind you of those words: ‘Who can this be? Even the

winds and sea obey him’” (Augustine, Sermon 63).

When we get caught up in temptation to live immorally, to not love God and our neighbor, we must rouse

Christ within us who will save us from sinking more into our sins, more into our faults, more into our very selves: “Do

you not care that we are perishing?” is our cry. It is like the cry of the psalmist in Psalm 44: “Awake! Why do you

sleep, O Lord? Rise up! Do not reject us forever!” (Ps. 44:24) And like the cry of the one in Psalm 130: “Out of the

depths I call to you, Lord; Lord, hear my cry!” (Ps. 130:1-2)

When we seem overcome and inundated by sin and evil in our life, we must awaken the sleeping Christ within

us who will repudiate the storms of sin and selfishness, fear and pusillanimity. He will command them to desist, to fall

back, to be quiet. He will not let evil control our lives. We must trust, though; we must not be afraid that he can, and

that he will, do this. For, he is an awesome, generous, merciful, compassionate and magnanimous God!

As we face life and its many tempests of temptations, let us “awaken Christ” to rebuke the waves of sin and the

winds of evil. We pray those very intimate, direct words of the psalmist, which is authentically the language of prayer:

“Rouse yourself! Why do you sleep, O Lord? Awake, do not cast us off forever!” (Ps. 44:24).

O Most High, all-powerful, good Lord God,

to you belong praise, glory,

honour and all blessing.

Be praised, my Lord, for all your creation

and especially for our Brother Sun,

who brings us the day and the light;

he is strong and shines magnificently.

O Lord, we think of you when we look at him.

Be praised, my Lord, for Sister Moon,

and for the stars

which you have set shining and lovely

in the heavens.

Be praised, my Lord,

for our Brothers Wind and Air

and every kind of weather

by which you, Lord,

uphold life in all your creatures.

Para cuando este sea leído, el Santo Padre Francisco ya habrá emitido su encíclica nueva Laudato Si

'(Alabado seas, oh Señor). El título proviene del Cántico de la Creación de San Francisco de Asís,

que es una oración de alabanza a Dios por la naturaleza y la creación. Toda la creación, incluyendo el

sol, la tierra, la luna, el viento, la lluvia, fuego, estrellas, incluso la muerte, se denomina en términos

familiares e íntimos de hermano y hermana. San Francisco quiere estar íntimamente conectado a toda la creación, y su homóni-

mo papal, Papa Francisco quiere dar a conocer a toda la humanidad su interconexión y relación con "nuestro hogar en común”...

exhortación apostólica Evangelii Gaudium (La alegría del Evangelio), lo hará con su encíclica Laudato Si '(Alabado seas, oh

Señor).

Este texto evangélico es de múltiple valor en varios niveles. Ya hice referencia a una de las formas en el párrafo ante-

rior. Otra forma de interpretar este pasaje es, que es un llamado para despertar al Cristo que duerme dentro de nosotros. Así es

como el gran San Agustín lo hizo. Vio la tormenta violenta y las olas rompiendo como un símbolo de las tentaciones que pueden

ahogar a toda la humanidad, a todos nosotros. La tempestad de tentaciones. Él escribe: "Surge una tentación: es el viento. Te

perturba: es el surgimiento de la mar. Este es el momento de despertar a Cristo y dejarlo que te recuerde esas palabras: "¿Quién

puede ser este? Hasta los vientos y el mar le obedecen"(Agustín, Sermón 63).

Cuando nos vemos atrapados en la tentación de vivir inmoralmente, de no amar a Dios y al prójimo, debemos despertar

al Cristo dentro de nosotros, que nos salvará de hundirnos más en nuestros pecados, más en nuestras faltas, más en nosotros mis-

mos: "¿no te importa que nos hundamos?" Es nuestro grito. Es como el grito del salmista en el Salmo 44: "¡Despiértate! ¿Por qué

duermes, Señor? ¡Levántate! No nos rechaces para siempre" (Salmo 44:24). Y como el grito de aquel en el Salmo 130: "¡Desde

lo hondo a ti grito, Señor; Señor, escucha mi clamor!" (Salmo 130: 1-2.)

Cuando nos vemos superados e inundados por el pecado y la maldad en nuestra vida, debemos despertar al Cristo que

duerme dentro de nosotros, Él es quien repudiará las tormentas del pecado y el egoísmo, el miedo y la pusilanimidad. Él las man-

dará a desistir, a retroceder, a callar. No permitirá que el maligno controle nuestras vidas. Pero debemos confiar; no hay que te-

ner miedo, Él puede hacer esto, y lo hará. Porque ¡Él es un Dios maravilloso, generoso, misericordioso, compasivo y magnáni-

mo!

A medida que nos enfrentamos a la vida y sus muchas tempestades de tentaciones, “despertemos a Cristo" para repren-

Sacrament of Baptism (newborns - age 6): Parents requesting the Sacrament of Baptism should be either living within par-ish boundaries or be registered in the parish. Parents and godparents are expected to attend a baptism class for an infant to be bap-tized. Parents are required to bring a signed photocopy of the child’s state-registered birth certificate to the baptism class. Godpar-ents who are not registered at St. Bartholomew must provide a letter from their parish which verifies that they meet the godparent requirements. All paperwork must be turned into the office before scheduling your child’s baptism date. The next class will be 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 9th in the church hall. Call the office to sign up for this class. Parents also need to call the office if you need to use the nursery while attending this class. A JOB OR A MINISTRY

If you are doing it because no one else will, it’s a job.

If you are doing it to serve the LORD, it’s a ministry.

other activities, it’s a job.

If you are committed to staying with it, even when it means let-

ting go of other things, it’s a ministry.

If you quit because no one praised you or thanked you, it was a

job.

If you stay with it even when no one seems to notice, it’s a min-

istry.

If you do it because someone else said it needs to be done, it’s a

job.

If you do it because you are convinced it needs to be done, it’s a

ministry.

It is hard to get excited about a job.

It is almost impossible not to get excited about a ministry.

People may say, “Well done,” when you do your job.

The LORD will say, “Well done,” when you complete your min-

istry.

An average church is filled with people doing jobs.

A great “magnanimous” church is filled with people involved in

ministry.

Disciples Assemble

Calling all Disciples! Come join us Thursdays this summer for Mass

at Noon (it is a shorter Mass than the ones on Sunday) then followed by

lunch and hangout time. * Please bring money for lunch, however each time you

come your name will be entered into a drawing for that day for a chance to win a free

lunch paid by Youth Ministry. ** Please arrive at the Church at 11:45 so that we can sit
