Remember that you can also watch the Sunday or week-day Mass on Catholic TV online at www.catholictv.org, or on Comcast at 268 or Verizon at 296, or anytime on demand at www.watchthemass.com.

CONFESSION

If there is anyone who desires to celebrate the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation, please let me know and we can work that out. You can find a guide to preparing for Confession by clicking here.

A NOTE FROM FR. DEREK

In this Sunday’s Gospel passage, Jesus continues his “Farewell Discourse” to his disciples, preparing them for his departure from them both in his Passion and death, but also in his ascent to the Father. Knowing the void there will be in their lives from his departure, he promises to send his Spirit to be with them. This is a reminder to us that, even in those times when God appears to be so far from us, he remains infinitely close to us. It reminds us, also, that God can use the worst of times to reveal to us his presence and work some good in our lives. As we continue these days of social distancing, even though talk has started to move towards “opening up,” it is important that we not fail to look back on the past few months, as difficult as they have been, to try to see how Jesus has been present to us, using this pandemic to work some good in our lives. Perhaps for some, in spite of being “closed in” with our loved ones day after day, we have come to a better understanding of them. Perhaps in spite of

being “stuck at home” we have gotten to know our neighbor better. Perhaps in spite of not being able to work, we have found a way to help someone in need. Some of us have endured more than others in these days. Let us seek to recognize also, the ways in which Jesus has used these days to draw us closer to him and reveal his closeness to us.

ASCENSION THURSDAY MASS

This Thursday, May 21st, is Ascension Thursday.

Under normal circumstances, Ascension Thursday, marking 40 days after Easter Sunday and our Lord’s Ascension into heaven, would be a Holy Day of Obligation. As you know, in these days of the stay-at-home advisory and social distancing, the

obligation for Sunday Masses and Holy Days is lifted. Because this is still an important Solemnity, we will plan to live-stream Mass that morning. It will take place at 9:00 (not the normal Sunday time of 9:30) on our Facebook site and website. For anyone who wishes to join us but cannot do 9:00, it will be available for replay afterwards.

ANNUAL ARCHDIOCESAN CATHOLIC APPEAL

While many aspects of our life have come to a standstill, the work of our diocesan and parish ministries continues as we strive to meet the needs of those who are relying on our guidance and assistance. The sick and homebound continue to receive spiritual support and information over the phone from the Archdiocese’s Faith Community Nurses and Chaplains program. Our Pregnancy Help Centers continue to provide resources for women facing crisis pregnancies. Those suffering from addiction still need support and guidance and many have greater need for counseling and spiritual support during this time of heightened anxiety.

Many thanks to those of you who have already supported it. As of May 4th, St. Bartholomew has pledged $51,210 towards our assessment of $32,320 and our goal of $103,526. The success of the Appeal is vital in funding the 51 central ministries that provide assistance to our parishes, schools, and communities in a variety of ways. Every gift, regardless of the size, is meaningful and can make an impact. To learn more about the Catholic Appeal, or to make your gift online, please visit the new Appeal website at bostoncatholicappeal.org, where you can also view the 2020 Catholic Appeal video.

STAFFING AT THE RECTORY

Please be aware that I have asked the rectory staff to work remotely as much as possible during these uncertain days. When you call, if I am not able to answer the phone at the moment, you are able to access a directory to leave a message for the person for whom you are looking.

NEEDHAM KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS' LEAVE NO NEIGHBOR BEHIND PROGRAM

Not since The Great Depression has hunger been a more threatening issue in our community and in our

country. With millions of our friends and neighbors having lost their jobs, food pantries are being

overwhelmed by the need. The Needham Knights of Columbus Fr. Daniel J. Kennedy Council is rising to

this heartbreaking challenge. We are encouraging our friends and neighbors to write a check in an

amount you can afford to The Needham K of C and mail it to our hall at Needham K of C Council 1611,

1211 Highland Ave., Needham, MA 02492. We will collect these monies for as long as the overwhelming need exists,

and deliver weekly checks to our local food pantries to be used to fill the shelves and help our local families until our

world begins to heal, and things return to normal.

To learn more about this effort, please visit www.needhamkofc.org. Please pray for our neighbors and our world.

CELEBRATING MAY,

THE MONTH OF MARY

May is the month dedicated to Our

Mother Mary. Usually we have Mary

focused crafts at Community Sunday,

the crowning of Mary on Mother's day

and daily rosary (all year). Although we

are unlikely to resume parish gatherings this month, we

can still be connected in celebrating May as the Month

of Mary. Please see our parish website to download a

resource book for celebrating the Month of Mary at

home! There are prayers, links to videos and articles,

children's activities, lectio divina, music links and

more! Every age group should be able to find

something. With all of our time at home, this is the

perfect time to make devotion to Mary a part of our

every day lives. Contact Jen if you have any questions

about the resource book.

to Needham’s most vulnerable population. If you are a senior or know of a senior citizen in need of a mask please contact us at [email protected]. Quantities are limited. Please note that these are not medical grade masks but they can provide a level of protection if you need to leave your home. All we ask in return is that you smile under your mask!

ELDERS & THOSE MOST AT RISK

Once again, please remember to check in on the elders of our community and those who might have underlying conditions that make them most at risk for this coronavirus. If you know of someone who needs something, or you, yourself, are in need, please call the parish office.

OFFERTORY

Thank you so much to those of you who

have been dropping off or mailing in your

donations, and to those of you who have

continued, or are new to, donating online. Your support

of the parish community is greatly appreciated. If you wish

to donate online, you can do that by going to the parish

website and clicking the “Donate!” icon or simply clicking

here. I know with the way the stock market is going, and

with the pandemic, that these are uncertain times, but

every little bit will help. Thank you.

REGISTRATION

In March, we were planning to implement a new online registration program (the one we used last year has some significant issues). Due to the office closures, that project has been delayed. We have both a printed and an online registration form available, however all payments will need to be either mailed to or dropped off at the parish office. We appreciate your understanding with this inconvenience. We understand that at this time many are in financially uncertain circumstances. Please feel free to register now, and pay later (or contact us in the fall if financial assistance is needed).http://stbartholomew-needham.org/re-registration/

UPDATE ON THE SACRAMENTS

The Archdiocese has delayed the

celebration of the sacraments until

further notice, so First Communion

and Confirmation have been post-

poned. We will update you on that timeline as soon as

we have more information, but, to paraphrase Dr. Fauci,

we don't set the timeline, the virus does. In the

meantime, we encourage you to continue to prepare

your children and teens, talk to them about your faith,

use the activities in the Holy Week book, and most

importantly, find time to spend in prayer.

MUSIC NEWS

Thank you to everyone who took the time to take our Online Music Survey! The winners of our “Pick a Song” questions were: I Am the Bread of Life and Be Not Afraid (tie); Amazing Grace, Hallelujah is Our Song, Rain Down, and Immaculate Mary. The biggest winner of all of those songs was Rain Down. The majority of respondents picked “a combination of traditional and contemporary hymns” for the type of hymns they like, and most people who responded say they like to sing along in church. We received many great suggestions for songs that people are missing, including Lift High the Cross, Hope, and Holy is the Lord. Look for your survey song suggestions in future Masses or on our facebook page. Thank you for participating!

LIVE CONCERT EVENT! THE ST. BART’S

MUSIC MINISTRY PRESENTS,

“AN EVENING WITH CHARLIE AND ANTONIA”

On Friday May 29th at 7 PM, please join us for a Zoom event, “An Evening with Charlie and Antonia.” This music program will feature many of your favorite hymns and spiritual songs, along with one or two songs that may become new favorites. There will be an opportunity to sing along from home as well! Using Zoom technology will allow Charlie and Antonia to sing for you live, right from their homes. It is going to be a joyful and spirit-filled event, so please mark your calendars! Details about how to join the event can be found in our parish weekly emails. A recording of the event will be posted on our facebook page and our website after the event.

PRAYER OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS TO MARY

FOR THE MONTH OF MAY

“We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God”.

In the present tragic situation, when the whole world is prey to suffering and anxiety, we fly to you, Mother of God and our Mother, and seek refuge under your protection.

Virgin Mary, turn your merciful eyes towards us amid this coronavirus pandemic. Comfort those who are distraught and mourn their loved ones who have died, and at times are buried in a way that grieves them deeply. Be close to those who are concerned for their loved ones who are sick and who, in order to prevent the spread of the disease, cannot be close to them. Fill with hope those who are troubled by the uncertainty of the future and the consequences for the economy and employment.

Mother of God and our Mother, pray for us to God, the Father of mercies, that this great suffering may end and that hope and peace may dawn anew. Plead with your divine Son, as you did at Cana, so that the families of the sick and the victims be comforted, and their hearts be opened to confidence and trust.

Protect those doctors, nurses, health workers and volunteers who are on the frontline of this emergency, and are risking their lives to save others. Support their heroic effort and grant them strength, generosity and continued health.

Be close to those who assist the sick night and day, and to priests who, in their pastoral concern and fidelity to the Gospel, are trying to help and support everyone.

Blessed Virgin, illumine the minds of men and women engaged in scientific research, that they may find effective solutions to overcome this virus.

Support national leaders, that with wisdom, solicitude and generosity they may come to the aid of those lacking the basic necessities of life and may devise social and economic solutions inspired by farsightedness and solidarity.

Mary Most Holy, stir our consciences, so that the enormous funds invested in developing and stockpiling arms will instead be spent on promoting effective research on how to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

Beloved Mother, help us realize that we are all members of one great family and to recognize the bond that unites us, so that, in a spirit of fraternity and solidarity, we can help to alleviate countless situations of poverty and need. Make us strong in faith, persevering in service, constant in prayer.

Mary, Consolation of the afflicted, embrace all your children in distress and pray that God will stretch out his all-powerful hand and free us from this terrible pandemic, so that life can serenely resume its normal course.

To you, who shine on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope, do we entrust ourselves, O Clement, O Loving, O Sweet Virgin Mary. Amen.
