LNow in his eighth season at the helm of theRevolution, Steve Nicol is the longest-tenured coachin Major League Soccer and is regarded as one of

the top tacticians and talent evaluators of soccer talent inthis country. His 87 career victories entering the 2009 sea-son have eclipsed the combined win total (73) of the pre-vious four head coaches in Revolution club history.

Nicol was named head coach of the team onNovember 6, 2002, after serving as the interim head coachfor the final 21 games of the 2002 regular season and thepostseason.

In each of his seven seasons with the Revolution,Nicol has guided the club to the MLS Cup Playoffs, includ-ing six consecutive Eastern Conference Championshipgames - an MLS record - between 2002 and 2007, and hasfour times led the team to MLS Cup (2002, 2005, 2006 &2007). The Revs are one of just three MLS clubs to returnto MLS Cup in back-to-back seasons.

Nicol's hiring marked yet another impressive accom-plishment in the Scotland native's distinguished career.During his playing days, Nicol, 46, gained worldwide famewhile playing for Liverpool FC in England's top divisionbefore moving on to play for Notts County, West BromwichAlbion, Sheffield Wednesday and Doncaster Rovers.

Nicol, who was born in Troon, Scotland, began hispro career at the age of 18 with Ayr United before beingsigned by Liverpool in 1981. The £300,000 transfer feeremains the Ayr United club record.

While with Liverpool, Nicol made 467 appearancesas a defender and midfielder and scored 46 goals. He wasat the heart of a Liverpool side that won four EnglishLeague Titles, three F.A. Cup titles and the 1984 EuropeanCup. In 1989, his importance to the team was honoredwhen Britain's soccer writers named him Footballer of theYear. Between 1984 and 1992 Nicol appeared 27 times forthe Scottish National Team, and started for his country atthe 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

Nicol's coaching career began in 1995 when he wasnamed player/manager at Notts County. Four years later,he arrived in New England as a player/assistant coachwith the Boston Bulldogs. In September 1999, he joinedthe Revs as interim coach for the final two games of theseason, both Revolution victories. He returned to theBulldogs as a player/coach for the 2000 and 2001 seasonsbefore re-joining the Revs as an assistant coach prior tothe 2002 campaign.

Nicol was named the 2002 MLS Coach of the Yearafter leading the Revolution to within a goal of the MLSCup, played before a record crowd at the new GilletteStadium. In 2003 and 2004, he led the Revs to return tripsto the conference final, falling in overtime and penaltykicks, respectively. He coached the Revs to his second MLS

Cup final in 2005, after winning the Eastern ConferenceChampionship with New England for a second time. Since2005, Nicol has guided the Revs back to MLS Cup with twomore Eastern Conference Championship titles and helpedthe team set the MLS record for consecutive appearancesin the conference championship with six (2002-07).

Nicol was also honored for his coaching excellencein August 2005, when he was chosen to lead the MLSSelect XI against Real Madrid at the Santiago BernabeauStadium. In 2007, Nicol added to his coaching honors whenhe led the 2007 MLS All-Stars to a victory over Scottishgiant Celtic FC in the 2007 Sierra Mist All-Star Game. In2008, Nicol extended MLS' winning streak against foreigncompetition in the All-Star Game, when his all-star squadtopped West Ham United, 3-2.

Nicol holds a USSF "A" coaching license. In additionto his coaching duties, Nicol is also a guest analyst forESPN International and ESPN's weekly "Press Pass" show.

Nicol resides in the western suburbs of Boston withhis wife, Eleanor. The couple has two adult children,Michael and Katy, and one grandson, Patrick.

ASSISTANT COACH

Gwynne Williams is in his third season as the goal-keepers coach for the New England Revolution. Hejoined the Revolution coaching staff in February

2007 after 12 seasons on the staff of NCAA Division II soc-cer powerhouse Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla. Sincejoining the Revs, Williams has helped establish NewEngland's goalkeeping corps as one of the best - and deep-est - in the league.

Last season, all three of the Revs' keepers saw first-team action in professional soccer, with Matt Reis andDoug Warren seeing MLS action and Brad Knighton seeingextensive starting time with the USL-1 Portland Timberswhile on mid-season loan.

In 2007, Reis, an MLS All-Star "First XI" selectionand All-Star Game starter, posted 10 shutouts for the thirdstraight season, in addition to posting three consecutiveshutouts in the Revs' first three postseason matches.Williams has also worked extensively with the Revs' back-up keepers, helping them backstop the team to a second-place finish in the 2007 Reserve Division.

In 2009, Paul Mariner enters his sixth season as SteveNicol's top assistant coach. He has helped lead theRevolution to four MLS Eastern Conference

Championship games, as well as three MLS Cup champi-onship game appearances since joining the Revs' staff inthe spring of 2004.

Born in Bolton, Lancashire, England, Mariner isremembered by world soccer fans as one of the top centerforwards in English football in the late 1970s and early1980s. He earned 35 international caps playing for hiscountry, and led the England attack in the 1982 FIFA WorldCup. He is the co-holder for the England National Teamrecord for goal scoring in consecutive games (6).

After starting his professional club career withPlymouth Argyle, Mariner scored 97 goals in eight seasonsfor Ipswich Town from 1976-84, before playing three sea-sons with Arsenal FC in London and finishing his EnglishLeagues career with Portsmouth.

Mariner's many honors as a player include winningthe 1978 FA Cup Final with Ipswich Town - a game in whichhe was named Man of the Match despite not being the

goal scorer - in the classic 1-0 victory over Arsenal. Hewas also a key member of the 1981 UEFA Cup-winningIpswich Town team. He scored for England against Francein the 1982 World Cup, and also scored in a qualifyingmatch against Hungary on Nov. 18, 1981, a 1-0 victory atWembley Stadium that put England through to the 1982World Cup.

Mariner came to the United States in 1988 to coachthe Albany Capitals of the APSL, followed by a stint withthe league's San Francisco Bay Blackhawks. Before joiningthe Revolution, Mariner was an assistant to former Revsforward and current Duke University head men's soccercoach John Kerr, Jr. at Harvard University. Mariner has alsoserved as Technical Director for the FC Greater BostonBolts, one of the top youth soccer clubs in the U.S.

Mariner has worked as a color commentator on BBCNorth West broadcasts of the English Premier League andas a World Cup analyst on New Zealand television andESPN International.

Mariner lives outside of Boston, and has three sons.

Williams was a member of Steve Nicol's coachingstaffs at the last two MLS All-Star Games, helping theleague post victories over Scottish Premier League giantCeltic FC in 2007 and English Premier League side WestHam United in 2008.

A native of St. Helens, England, Williams has beenon the coaching advisory councils of the Canadian SoccerAssociation and Bermuda Football Association. An NSCAANational Goalkeeping Instructor, Williams is a member ofthe USSF National Coaching Staff and holds a USSF "A"coaching license.

Williams earned his certificate of education fromNonington College of Physical Education in 1975, and com-pleted his bachelor of education degree at LondonUniversity in 1976.

Williams lives south of Boston with his partner,Paula. He has two grown children, Michelle and Oliver, andone newborn, Toby (1).

Brian Banfill is in his fourth season as the equipmentmanager of the New England Revolution. Banfill'sresponsibilities include ordering and maintaining the

team's uniforms, practice gear and equipment, and over-seeing the game day equipment staff that assists in boththe Revs' and visitors' locker rooms and on the field. Healso works closely with the technical staff on setting upand equipping training sessions both at home and on theroad.

Banfill was honored for his exemplary work when hewas selected as the equipment manager for both the 2007MLS All-Star Team that defeated Scottish giant Celtic FC,and the 2008 All-Star Team that topped West Ham United.

ment manager in November 2005, after three seasonsworking with the team's volunteer game day staff, theRevs Brigade. He contributed in many areas during thistime, also working in the popular Soccer Celebrationpregame interactive entertainment area before joiningthe gam day staff where he worked both the home andvisitors' locker rooms.

Prior to joining the Revolution, Banfill worked foreight years in the sporting goods retail industry. He is anavid ice hockey fan and participates in adult pick-upgames in his spare time.

Banfill lives in central Massachusetts with his wife,Melissa, and their son, Kyle.

Sean Kupiec, A.T.C., P.E.S., is in his second season withthe Revolution as the team's head athletic trainer. Inaddition to being a certified athletic trainer, Kupiec is

also recognized as a performance enhancement specialistby the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

Kupiec's responsibilities with the Revs include over-seeing and directing all aspects of the team's medicalcare, players' rehabilitation and sports performance, bothin-season and during the offseason. For his efforts with theRevs in his first season, Kupiec was selected as the headathletic trainer for the 2008 MLS All-Star Team that defeat-ed the English Premier League's West Ham United.

Prior to joining the Revs, Kupiec spent the 2006 and2007 National Football League (NFL) seasons with the NewEngland Patriots as the team's athletic training intern,where he worked closely with the Pats' athletic trainingand strength and conditioning staffs to maintain the healthand fitness of the record-setting 2007 AFC Champions.

With the Pats, he also coordinated the daily responsibili-ties for the season and training camp interns, compiledthe team's daily injury and NFL reports, and administeredthe team's IMPACT testing, in addition to overseeing sever-al game day procedures with opposing teams.

Before joining The Kraft Sports Group, Kupiec spenttwo years as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at theUniversity of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, where he workedwith the school's wrestling and men's and women's trackand field and cross country teams, and assisted with thefootball team's care. Kupiec also earned his master's inexercise and sports science in 2006 while at UNC.

A native of Utica, N.Y., Kupiec graduated fromSpringfield College in 2004 and currently lives south ofBoston. He was also a featured speaker at the 2008National Athletic Trainers Association annual meeting.

2007: Started at right back in all 28 games in which heplayed. Left the game at Kansas City on Aug. 19 in the45th minute with a calf injury, his first time missedbecause of injury in his Revolution career. He later missedgames against the Red Bulls on Aug. 25 and Dallas on Sept.15 with the same injury. Scored his first goal since June25, 2005, when he netted the go-ahead goal at D.C. onSept. 9 early in the second half. Started and played all 90minutes in each of the Revs' four postseason games,including his fourth MLS Cup appearance on Nov. 18against Houston. 2004: Heaps continued to hold down his place as thestarting right back in Steve Nicol's team for most of the2004 campaign and through the playoffs. 2005: Elected to the league Best XI and All-Star teamsand voted Revolution team Most Valuable Player by theNew England soccer media. Considered by most observersto have been the MLS Select team's best player in theTrofeo Santiago Bernabeau match at Real Madrid on August23. Added six goals to his usual tough-tackling, accurate-passing brand of play. Recorded his first-career two-goalgame against the MetroStars at Giants Stadium on Sept.17, also adding an assist in that game.

2004: In his sophomore season in MLS, Joseph staked aclaim to being the premier contention midfielder in theleague. Started and played in 23 regular season matchesand all three Revs playoffs games, registering three regu-lar-season assists. Missed two games in June to play inWorld Cup qualifying with Grenada. Also missed actionbecause of a broken nose (two games) and a hipflexor/quadriceps injury (three games). Accumulated justfour regular season yellow cards despite playing an aggres-sive style, a testament to his good timing and tacklingtechnique. Was a 2004 Sierra Mist MLS All-Star.

2003: Joseph became a force in central midfield duringhis rookie year with the Revolution, appearing in 28 games

and finishing second on the club in minutes played with2,466. Made his MLS debut on April 19 against Columbus atGillette Stadium when he came on for Daniel Hernandezat halftime. One week later he made his first start inDallas and was a fixture in Steve Nicol's starting lineupfrom that point on, missing just one game. Finished theseason with two goals and two assists for six points and hisstrong partnership with José Cancela in central midfieldhelped spur the Revs to a 6-0-1 record over the final twomonths of the regular season. Played briefly in goalagainst Chicago on July 19. Recorded his first-career MLSpoint (an assist) on May 17 in a 3-0 victory over Chicago athome, then scored his first career MLS goal on Sept. 28against Columbus in a 3-2, overtime victory at home.

BEFORE MLS: Joseph was originally drafted by theRevolution in the second round (14th overall) in the 2002MLS SuperDraft. Pursued playing opportunities with teamsin Italy and Germany before returning to the UnitedStates, where he played for the New York Freedoms of theD3 Pro-League during the 2002 season. Scored seven goalsand added one assist with the Freedoms.

2005: With his start at Columbus on Sept. 21, Ralstonmade his 100th appearance in a Revolution uniform, hisfirst having come on March 23, 2002 against theMetroStars. He finished the season with 103 starts, enoughfor fourth all-time in that category for the Revs. His assiston Taylor Twellman's sixth-minute goal at the MetroStarson May 21 gave him the Revolution record 36th careerassist to surpass Joe-Max Moore (35) as he finished theseason with 40 career assists for the Revolution. With hisassist on Twellman's 39th-minute game-winner against theCrew on Sept. 10, Ralston claimed the Revolution recordfor game-winning assists with eight, passing Mike Burns(seven GWA in 108 games) and José Cancela (seven GWA in61 games).

2004: Ralston's versatility proved to be a huge asset toNew England as he filled-in at right fullback, left midfieldand central midfield because of the Revs' injury problems.The Revolution's team MVP, tied for third on the team ingoals (7) and tied for second on the team in assists (8).Only member of the team to play every minute of all 30games in 2004. Was an MLS All-Star selection, his fourthsuch honor. Started all three of the Revs' playoff contests,scoring one goal and adding two assists. 2003: Though away on U.S. National Team duty for themiddle portion of the MLS season, still put up strong num-bers for the Revolution. Started 25 of the 26 games inwhich he played. Did not start the Revs' July 27 contestagainst D.C. after returning from national team duty.Converted the game-winning penalty kick vs. D.C. Unitedon October 11 that clinched a playoff spot for NewEngland. Started all three of the Revs' playoff contests.

2002: Taken sixth overall by the Revs in the MLSAllocation Draft on Jan.11, after a six-year stay with theTampa Bay Mutiny. Ended the season having earned histhird MLS Best XI distinction. Led the league with 19assists. Accounted for assists on slightly less than half (11)of Taylor Twellman's goals on the season (23). Was astarter on the MLS All-Star team, scoring the game winnerin the 81st minute. In the decisive Game Three of theEastern Conference Final against the Crew, Ralston talliedhis first points of the 2002 postseason, scoring in the 17thminute.

2001: Tampa Bay's team MVP, netted seven goals andrecorded six assists. His seven goals matched his previouscareer high, which he set as a rookie in 1996. Recorded20-plus points for the fourth time in his career. Started all25 games in which he played. Hewas also the MLS Select Team's starting goalkeeper for theprestigious Trofeo Santiago Bernabeau match against RealMadrid on Aug. 23. Led MLS in saves with 115, and his 1.13GAA was tied for second-best in MLS. Ranked second inMLS in wins with 16. His 10 shutouts in 2005 placed himthird in MLS in that category. Posted a league-leading 384-minute shutout streak in six matches between April 23 andMay 21. On Sept. 10 against Columbus, Reis set a new Revsall-time career mark for wins by a goalkeeper with 22.Also, by playing the full 90 minutes in goal, he took overthe top spot for minutes played in goal with 4,817, andalso broke the Revs' all-time club mark for saves by tally-ing his 207th stop.
