Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time

Parish COOK-OUT –What FUN!! This years parish Cook-out was held last Saturday after the 4:30 pm Mass. Around 60 people showed up to share Hamburgers, Hotdogs, love and laughter!! We managed to avoid major rain and the children enjoyed the DJ—New England Sound who had contests and prizes for them, and the young parishioners enjoyed the games Fr. Vinnie provided. The adults took advantage of a moment to relax and enjoy catching up and meeting new parishioners. Thank you to all those who helped to make the event a great success. Left over food was donated to Ilse Marks Food Pantry.

ECO-TIP OF THE WEEK: Save a tree! With all the paper we waste each year, we can build a 12 foot high wall of paper from New York to California! US offices use 12.1 trillion sheets of paper a year. Save scrap paper instead of throwing it away. There are many different ways you can reuse this paper; including notes and reminders, book covers, wrapping paper, bookmarks, or fun projects such as origami and coloring. You can even print on the unused side of printer paper, which means you get two uses out of one page and cut your waste in half.

A note from Kathleen Crawford about the Catholic Relief Services trip to Kenya

Hibari (Hello!) Hujambo (How are you?)

As I prepare to travel to Kenya, I've been reading about Kenya and trying (trying!) to learn a little Kiswahili. Although there are many indigenous languages, almost everyone in Kenya speaks English.

Kenya has more 40 major ethnic groups and several smaller ones, as well. All remain rooted in tribal traditions. The largest is the Kikuyu, who make up about 20% of the country’s population. About 80% of Kenya's population is Christian, mostly Anglican or Roman Catholic. Many people are Muslim, especially along the Swahili coast and among Asian immigrants. A small number of people follow Hinduism and Sikhism.

In reading about Kenya and its people, I stumbled on a website called “If It Were My Home.” If we lived in Kenya instead of the US, we would:

Be 5.5 times more likely to be unemployed Be 6.6 times more likely to die in infancy Be 10.2 times more likely to have HIV/AIDS Make 96.59% less money Be 82.95% less likely to be in prison

Until I write again, if you would like to know more about the facts behind these and other figures, please visit http://www.ifitweremyhome.com/compare/US/KE

From Senior Deacon Mike:

Our challenge in the world today is to welcome all peoples to the mercy of God.

In the reading from Isaiah in the lectionary today, “Thus says the LORD:

I know their works and their thoughts, and I come to gather nations of every language;

they shall come and see my glory. I will set a sign among them.”

Let us open our hearts to God’s mercy..
