Participation in a collaborative dialogue with open ended questions about a text

Intellectual development through critical thinking

Social development evidenced through communication skills

PRE-SEMINAR

Each student identifies personal goal for the seminar

The class determines goal for the entire group

Participants review objectives: listen, think, speak, refer to text, and respect

Students receive text and background information to prepare for seminar

TEXT

Text may be a poem, short story, graph, political cartoon, map, experiment, photograph, essay, word problem, or piece of art

Includes strong ideas and values Appropriate level of challenge and

complexity Relevance to participants Appropriate degree of ambiguity

SEMINAR

Facilitator asks open ended questions regarding the ideas and values of the text

Students utilize communication skills Opportunities for analysis, synthesis,

and evaluation

Class Reflects on Group Goal Self-Assessment of Seminar Extension/Enrichment Activities
