New Saints:

Two Americans were canonized by Pope Benedict this last October 21, St. Kateri Tekakwitha and St.Marianne Cope.

The first, St. Kateri, died at the age of 24. With this in mind I want to encourage all of you who areyoung to consider your own path to holiness and what you need to work on to get there. Sainthood isnot a matter of strictness; it may or may not have anything to do with appearance or looking holy. When you consider the lives of most saints, there are many consistent qualities that show up over andover: generosity and gentleness, kindness, prayerfulness and patience, joy – even good humor, humilityand compassion, with an inclination to forgive quickly, and the strong desire to lead a moral life. Itsounds like the Scout Law, except that they have more to do with our relationships with God andpeople. If St. Kateri teaches us anything, though, you don’t have to be old to be a saint.

St. Marianne left her comfortable position as Superior General of her Franciscan order to serve thelepers of Hawaii – look her story up online. It’s an incredible story of selflessness that invites all of usto consider what we might be willing to leave behind to care for others and do God’s will.

Quiet Heroes:

I’ve been visiting our grades 1 through 5 children during their faith formation centers, and I’mincredibly touched by the many women and men, 55 in all, who have generously responded, providinga moment of grace and learning for the children. The work can be challenging, especially as thechildren have already been in school all day and are, well, a bit bouncy. Here is a place where I seemany young parents in their early thirties taking leadership roles and giving each week to prepare andteach. I am particularly touched by the 25 Confirmation candidates who are aids in the centers, thereeach week to give moral support to the catechists, and to help the children learn. Their presence makesa statement to the children about the importance of what they are doing.

Additionally, you may not know but a team of 36 high school juniors and seniors have joined with 10young adults to help out as peer ministers for the freshman and sophomores preparing to receive thesacrament of Confirmation. Their lively faith and willingness to participate and share is a tremendousgift to the parish and the building up of the Kingdom. It’s thrilling to see.

These volunteers are quiet heroes, making a difference in the lifeof children and youth…I look forward to the day when one ofthem is recognized by the Church as a saint.

Siempre adelante!

May they enjoy peace in their new life with Christ Jesus.Ensure a safe road trip this holidayTaking the kids on a road trip to visit relatives and friends is aholiday tradition for many of us. Here are two tips that can help youget there and back as safely as possible:1. Ensure that all occupants of any vehicles are properly secured

and that there are no large or heavy items in the vehicle that may injure the occupants at any sudden stops.

2. A single parent travelling with children should ensure that permission from other parent is readily available for authorities (this is to prevent one parent abductions). This is especially important for air/train or cross border travel.
