NEWSLETTER ISSUE No 12 9th August 2017
HEAD LICE
Head lice are common in all schools and Padbury PS is no exception. Head
lice spread by head-to-head contact with another person who has head lice.
This kind of contact includes group work at school, playing or hugging. Head
lice can run from one head to another in seconds. They cannot fly, jump or
swim, but they can swing from one hair to another.
It is important to note that whether your child’s hair is long or short, clean or
dirty, many families with school aged children and teenagers will have contact
with head lice. The school will notify parents if there is an incident of head lice
in their child’s class and this notification will include advice on how to treat
the condition.
Whilst they can be very frustrating for parents, I would like to remind everyone
that head lice are not dangerous, do not carry diseases, and are not a sign of
poor hygiene (cleanliness).
Parents should also note that if your child has head lice they should keep him
or her away from school until treatment has started. Your child may return to
school when all live head lice have been removed. There is no need to stay
away from school if there are only a few remaining eggs, but you must
continue treatment over the following ten days to ensure that all eggs and
hatchlings have been removed.
SCHOOL BEHAVIOUR
Student behaviour at Padbury PS is of the highest standard and this is a
credit to the entire school community. However, there are times when children
will find themselves in a situation where conflict arises. Most of the time, this
is entirely normal and school staff assist and support students to resolve their
differences in a low key and restorative manner.
Students sometimes confuse normal conflict with bullying and teachers have
been asked to explicitly teach children the difference between the two. This is
important so that appropriate strategies are brought to bear when problems
arise.
To assist parents talk to their children about this the table below highlights
the difference between the two. It is also important for parents to remember
that school staff can only deal with issues of which they are aware. If students
raise a concern with staff at school, that concern will be dealt with – parents
may be informed if circumstances warrant it.

NAPLAN ONLINE
In May of every year, students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 take part in the National
Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). NAPLAN was first
introduced in 2008 and has become a routine part of the school calendar in
Australia.
NAPLAN is moving online. This means moving NAPLAN from the current paper
-based tests to computer-based assessments. The transition to NAPLAN
online will commence from 2018 for schools which elect to participate. From
2019 all schools will be expected to participate in NAPLAN online.
In preparation for this change, Padbury PS is engaging in a School Readiness
test to determine whether we are ready to move to NAPLAN online in 2018.
Over the next two weeks students in Year 3 and 5 will participate in the
readiness tests. The tests will help us determine whether our IT infrastructure
is able to manage the tests and provide staff the opportunity to become
familiar with the process.
Students will also be able to gain some preliminary familiarity with the tests
and provide us with valuable feedback to assist us in determining whether we
will participate in 2018.
It is hoped that all our students will take part in this trial to enable us to fully
check our IT infrastructure. However, if you do not wish your child to
participate, please let the class teacher know before Monday 14th August.
If any parents have queries, please contact me to discuss.

Normal Conflict Bullying Behaviour
Happens once in a while Is repeated – it happens more than
once
Not planned, it just happens when people
get upset
Planned, on purpose
Both people are upset Person being bullied is more upset
than the bully
Both people try to work out their
problem
The bully does not want to work
things out, they want the control
What to do if your child reports an incident from school:
Try to gauge the nature of the reported incident – it is important to
remember that you will be hearing only one side of the story;
Ask whether the incident was reported to staff;
If it was not reported to staff, speak to your child’s class teacher about
the incident – they will speak to students and try to determine the
nature of the incident and manage it accordingly.
