NEWSLETTER ISSUE No. 9 2019
LIGHTNING CARNIVAL
On Thursday 27th June, our Year 4-6 (and some Yr 3’s) students will participate in the
district Lightning Carnival at Kingsway Reserve. This year we will field soccer, modcrosse
and netball teams.
It is a great opportunity for our students to compete against our rival schools and I am
always very proud of our students who show great determination and spirit every time they
play, despite often being pitted against much bigger opponents.
Not only do our students perform brilliantly on the field, but they represent themselves and
their school to a very high standard throughout the day.
I am sure everyone will join me in wishing them a great day.
SEMESTER ONE REPORTS
Semester 1 reports will be sent home with students on Tuesday 2nd July (Week 10).
I would like to remind parents that the expectations for report grades rise considerably as
students advance from year to year. Semester 1 learning area grades provide an indication
of where students are placed in terms of the year level outcomes they are expected to
achieve by the end of the year.
For semester 1, a “C” grade indicates that a student is on track to achieve the year level
outcomes by the end of the year. In some instances, a student’s grade may be lower than
they received at the end of last year. This does not necessarily mean they have gone
“backwards”. It is simply an indication of where they are placed in terms of the outcomes
they are working towards for the current year.
Teachers endeavour to report on what your child can currently do and what they are
working towards in order to improve further. Please ensure you read the comments
carefully as these will also provide valuable information about a student’s progress.
If your child’s report indicates that the class teacher would like an interview, please contact
the teacher to arrange a mutually appropriate time. These interviews enable teachers to
provide more in-depth information about where a child is placed and why. They will also be
able to explain in more detail what a student needs to achieve to move to the next grade.
PARENTS APPROACHING STAFF
Whilst we have a fantastic parent body, from time to time, issues arise which may cause
parents concern and necessitate a meeting with staff to clarify the
circumstances.
I would like to remind parents that, irrespective of the circumstances, staff should not be
approached in an angry or aggressive manner, particularly if children are in the vicinity.
Angry, aggressive approaches rarely, if ever, achieve any positive outcomes and I have in-
structed staff that they should not conduct any discussions or interviews under these
circumstances. I have also instructed them to report the matter to me so that I might con-
sider whether any further action is required.

ANZAC DAY POPPIES
As a result of the sale of the clay poppies students made last term, Padbury Primary School was
able to donate $200 to the Army Museum of WA. We have received a letter from the Treasurer of
the Army Museum acknowledging our donation and thanking all the students and Mrs Reid for
your valuable contribution.
LIBRARY NEWS
We have received some lovely new books in the Library for students to
borrow.
ROOM 17 CATAPULTS
The Year 6’s have designed and made Catapults using pop sticks, hot glue guns, masking tape,
elastic bands and paint, as the base materials, as part of Design and Technology for this term. All
teams came up with a design that worked, although we did discover some designs were more
robust than others.
On completion, we had a shoot off where the teams fired their catapults as far as possible in a
best of three arrangement. The winning team was Seb Bumbalough and Dylan Blooodworth
whose catapult fired a dice 10.47 metres. They were also the team whose catapult maintained
the best average over the three shots.

I received your letter and donation of $200.00 today and would sincerely like to thank you,
Donna Reid, students and the Padbury Primary School. The museum Foundation Board relies
very much on
donations made during the year as we do not receive any funding from Government. The mu-
seum is manned by volunteers who assist in guiding touring parties and members of the public
which is our only other source of regular revenue. All this helps us to preserve and present the
contributions made by members of Army defence [particularly from the Western Australia per-
spective] in past conflicts in which Australia has been engaged.
Once again, please pass on our thanks to all concerned.

An Exciting RoboLab Incursion Making Mars Rovers
by Year One and Two
First, we set up in our classroom and
used our interactive whiteboard to watch
a video of a Mars Rover blasting into
space and landing on Mars. We watched
how it blasted from Earth as a rocket. It
took 7 months to get to Mars. When it
got there it landed by slowing down with
a parachute, air bags and reverse
rockets.
The children were very excited about making their models. They felt proud of their results and that they could
program it to move. The only problem was they we re a bit sad when it was time to say goodbye and they had to
break up their model and pack it away. We really hope we get to do an incursion like RoboLab again!

Pupil Free Days Term 3 22nd July Term4 14th Oct 20th Dec
On Monday 17th of June the year ones and twos had an
Incursion with RoboLab to practice learning about Science,
Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths. Two lovely ladies came
to teach us how to build our Robots using iPads and lego.
Then we got into groups of three and we
started making our own Mars Rovers. It
was helpful using the iPad for instructions
but sometimes it was tricky finding the
pieces that we needed. After that, we
started to p rogram (code) our I instructions
for our rovers. We told it to move forward,
backward, go fast or slow and to stop.
Some children even made their rover sing,
make noises and even change colour!

TALES OF TIMES PAST
On Friday 14th June, we had Volunteers from the “Tales of Times Past” program visit our
school and entertained our students with tales from the olden days. The stories they shared
were of their own experiences over the last century and linked with our current HASS
curriculum in relation to Technology, Transport, Environment, History, Schooling, Local History
and Family Life. They also had a range of memorabilia on display
such as old phones, games, clothing, typewriters and record
players. The students thoroughly enjoyed the presentation and were
amazed at how much things

Room 14 - Adopt a Coastline Term 2, 2019
Room 14 students were very fortunate to be selected to participate in the City of Joondalup’s
Adopt a Coastline/ Bushland program. The students engaged in a variety of activities during
this program – incursions and excursions. Throughout the program, students learnt about the
delicate environment, teamwork, volunteering in their community and environmental
responsibility through active citizenship. The programs and activities address outcomes in the
learning areas of Science, History, Geography and Civics and Citizenship.
Incursions: during the Nearer to Nature – Totem Yarning incursion students learnt about
Aboriginal significance of country, animals and artefacts. Coast care imparted some important
messages to remember about of our coastal and marine environments:
Look after the plants on the beach – stick to the pathways and don’t damage the dunes.
Respect the wildlife that lives on or near the beach – especially birds and reptiles.
Be considerate of marine plants and animals.
Pick up all the litter at the beach as it is life threatening to birds and marine life – 3 pieces
to save the beach!!
The excursions had the students working alongside City of Joondalup environmental officers in
rehabilitating the dune systems at the old Mullaloo Caravan Park site on Merrifield Place,
Mullaloo. The aim was to ensure that the dunes were rehabilitated with careful planting and the
removal of weeds. All the site activities took place in the dunes at Mullaloo.
Room 14 is currently creating a display about keeping our oceans clean that will be exhibited in
the Joondalup Library and available for the general public to view during the term 2 holidays. At
our Assembly, Thursday 19th September there will be a Thankyou Presentation to the Room 14
students from the City of Joondalup and our display will be exhibited at this Assembly.
Thank you to Mrs Khan, Mrs Murray and Ms Usher for volunteering on our excursions J
