Theological Reflections on Technology
“In a culture like ours, long accustomed to splitting and dividing all things as a means of control, it is sometimes a bit of a shock to be reminded that, in operational and practical fact, the medium is the message. This is merely to say that the personal and social consequences of any medium—that is, of any extension of ourselves—result from the new scale that is introduced into our affairs by each extension of ourselves, or by any new technology.” When Marshall McLuhan opened his 1964 book Understanding Media with these words, he had in mind every form of media, or technology, known to man, and some as of then yet to come. His argument, roughly, is that the things we use shape more than our knowledge, but also our worldview, our solutions to problems, and our values. Question. What technology has had the most impact on forming the way that you perceive the world? I don’t know what the answer to that is, but there are a lot of technologies that I would not want to comprehend the world without. It would be hard to go back to the age before cellphones and the ability immediately to be connected to almost anyone anywhere in the world. My kids won’t grow up in a world without Skype and the ability to see Grandma and Grandpa whether at their house or on vacation. But none of that would be available without the ability to harness electricity. Our house is only 31 years old, but one of the first things we noticed is a lack of power outlets where you’d anticipate them. For instance, the hallway by the bedrooms has none. Where do we put a nightlight for the kids? Cell phones would also be boring if not for the smartphones of today, most of which are extensions of computers. And what about your tablet? Oh, and all of them are affordable – you probably didn’t take out a second mortgage to buy one – because of automation predictably making parts, and the assembled product making it to your door in 12 hours because Amazon is not a rainforest but an internet opportunist. How about the printed word? The fact that church newsletters are still published on paper is in some ways astounding, especially since the concept of making many copies of a document quickly is well over 500 years old now, but some of us still prefer hard copy books to Kindles. Oh, and we haven’t begun to think “theologically” about any of this technology yet. What does God have to say about it all? Here are three things to consider:
God uses technology. The story of the Gutenberg Printing Press and its role in the Reformation is common, and the impact of the Reformation would have been significantly less without it.
God has given us the dominion and mental agility to develop technologies to solve many of our problems, but without using his wisdom in discerning how we use them, they can also create problems.
God’s Word permeates all technology. Whether you read the Bible on your phone, listen to someone reading from the 1611 King James, or go to Concordia Seminary and see Johan Sebastian Bach’s personal Bible on display, “The word of the Lord endures forever.”
One final thought. If McLuhan was right that technology is an extension of ourselves, don’t let yourself become an extension of technology. Be instead an extension of God, regardless of the technology you use.

Thanking Veterans by Dale Bartel, Parish Education
On November 11th our nation honors veterans wo have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. On Mon., November 11th, remember to thank a veteran who has served to preserve our freedoms. Many veterans today are suffering from physical and mental injuries. Immediate help is available to a veteran by calling the VA Crisis Line at 1-800-273-8255 or texting 838255. The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (LCMS) has provided chaplains since the Civil War during times of war and peace. Today the LCMS has 60 active duty military chaplains. Another 69 chaplains serve in the Reserves and National Guard. We also have chaplains serving in VA hospitals, Civil Air Patrol, and in prison ministry. The Ministry to the Armed Forces recruits and trains chaplains and also provides Ministry-By-Mail support to 3400 Lutheran military personnel and their families. During my four years of active duty, I received monthly worship materials and had an opportunity to participate in worship services. If you know of Lutheran service men or women on active duty, please inform one of our pastors to have the service person receive worship resources.
Visit lcms.org/armedforces to learn more about this ministry and the resources it provides. You can support this ministry by contributing to: Ministry to the Armed Forces 1333 S. Kirkwood Rd. St. Louis, MO 63122-7295

2. Share 3-4 of those bags with friends and neighbors along with information about our worship services. Return your full bags between November 9th and Thanksgiving, November 28th.
3. Come assist with the preparation of family grocery packs on Friday, November 29th at 6:00 pm by sorting, bagging, and crating for the assigned recipients.
4. Meet at church for prayer and assist with the delivery of the bagged groceries on Saturday, November 30th at 9 am from the Narthex.

C o i n s f o r C h r i s t & M o r e LCMS Ministry to the Armed Forces
by Carolyn Fiedler
“Standing Firm
in Christ Alone”. St.
Paul tells us in Eph. 6:11
“put on the whole armor
of God so you may be
able to stand firm against
the devil’s strategies”.
These are powerful
words! According to Chaplain Craig Muehler, Director, LCMS Ministry to
the Armed Forces, “His (Paul’s) apostolic tone is like a great military leader
addressing professionally trained warriors before a battle….. The intense
passion behind “stand firm” carries the tenacity & urgency to above all
hold in place, fix bayonets & dig in!”
Standing firm in Christ alone isn’t easy. Prayers & support are crucial!
Chaplain Muehler notes, “Our brave military members continue to stand
firm against the enemies of our nation and defend the freedoms we hold
dear. At the same time they must also stand firm in their faith.”
Our Coins for Christ emphasis for November gives us the opportunity
to support LCMS Ministry to the Armed Forces. This ministry of the
Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod provides spiritual resources to persons
serving in the military while also recruiting & endorsing dedicated pastors
to serve as LCMS military chaplains.
Currently we have almost 200 chaplains representing our church on
active duty, the reserves, National Guard & Civil Air Patrol. These “pastors
in uniform” provide Word & Sacrament ministry. They serve on forward
bases, in bunkers, on battleships, in field hospitals & training camps,
bringing the Good News of God’s Word to those who serve. Eighteen
chaplains are now stationed overseas or deployed in harm’s way.
In the absence of a chaplain, Lutheran devotional materials help to
provide spiritual nourishment. Our Ministry-by-Mail program assures
they will receive copies of Portals of Prayer as well as other materials. To
add a member to this program, call 800-248-1930, ext. 1337 or complete
the form online.
Operation Barnabas provides a network of care through trained
congregations wanting to reach out to members of military families at the
local level. Currently about 300 of Synod’s 6000 congregations are active
in this program. This intentional outreach helps the families of loved ones
deployed & assists those who have served reintegrate back home with their
family, their church & their community
Monday, November 11th, is Veterans Day. We thank those who serve
or have served for our freedoms. We thank our Chaplains who truly can
help our military “stand firm in Christ alone”. We can show our support
through Coins for Christ this month. Your gifts and prayers are a
blessing! Thank you!

Praying for Our Children—Part 2
“They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from
the comb.” Psalm 19:10
This is part 2 of praying for our children. In my prayer time I still pray for my children. Over the years I have
used the items from this list below to remand my children into the hands of the Lord.
Lord God I also pray that You would:
Keep my children safe from the corruption of their sinful nature, from
the seductions of the world, and from the attacks of the devil
Bless them with Christian friends
Bless them with a godly spouse and a truly Christian marriage.
Enable them to be a godly husband or wife
Keep them and any future spouse morally pure
Forgive the sins of their youth
Keep them free from the love of money
Bless them with a heart of a servant
Provide them with the education You want them to have.
Our children are our blessings and special gifts from the Lord. No matter how old they are we still care deeply
for them and want the best for them. With Joshua I often prayed, “As for me and my house, we will serve the
Lord.” The best way for me to do that was to lift my children up in prayer. As the principal I now pray for all my
students with whom the Lord has blessed my life. Join me in praying for your children and ours at Pilgrim!
Students of the Month—October Congratulations to our Students of the Month for October. We give thanks for Rachel Stock, Derrick Gordon, Aiden
Rusboldt and Harrison Newkirk. They were chosen by their teachers Mr. Mike Schumm and Mrs. Patti Giovanetti
because of their leadership, positive attitudes, great listening, following directions, outstanding citizenship, hard work at
school, exemplary behavior, and commitment to the Lord’s Word which impacts the students in their classes! Way to go!
Congratulations—Above and Beyond Awards I have said many times in this printing over the years I have been at Pilgrim, we could not do what we do without the
wonderful volunteers who give of themselves to make ours an exemplary school. So we say thanks and congratulations to
the ladies who organized, implemented, and followed through with the Walk-a-thon which has made $22,000!
Thanks to Erin Schaefer, Lisa Medenwald, Lin Lehman, and Sara Zeitler. These ladies have been such a terrific help
and a blessing. We are so blessed to have people who care so much about our Pilgrim Lutheran School, the people they
serve, and our positive church and school climate. These people are our Above and Beyond Award Winners and without
them we would not be the quality church and school we are.
Pilgrim Projects We are so thankful for the completion of our Media Center. Thanks to all who donated time, talents, and
treasures! We continue to say, “Today’s readers are tomorrow’s leaders!” We are also so proud to open our
gymnasium with our refinished floor. What a blessing! As we look toward the 2nd semester we are excited to
provide iPads for our students in grades 5-8 to go one to one with this technology. Your contributions for the
Walk-a-thon over our budgeted amount of $19600 will go toward reducing parent cost. Your participation in our
Auction with special proceeds will enable our children to utilize this technology. We will be making a special plea
to our Grandparents on what we will call our VIP (Very Important Persons) day to help in the funding of this truly
worthwhile project. God is so good! He just continues to bless and bless and bless!
Thank you for your unbelievable support of Pilgrim Lutheran School with your finances, positive words of encouragement,
and especially your prayers! Thanks for the magnificent, positive word of mouth that you share with all you know! It is
really exciting to see what the Lord is doing at our school and with our children! We pray the Lord will continue to
bless us all year through!
Mr. John E. Schultz- Principal 1 Thessalonians 5:18 – In everything give thanks!
