PASTOR’S COLUMN
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Merry Christmas and a joy filled New Year! On this Feast of the Holy Family, we welcome
those who are visiting during the Christmas holidays as well as a special “welcome home” to our college students who have returned to be with your family. Your presence over the holidays fills us with joy. It’s good to be together as family – near and far – and so welcome to all!
During this time between Christmas and New Year’s, the Church celebrates the Feast of Holy Family and our call to holiness. It is in the midst of family that we first learn of God. It’s in the midst of family that we learn to be godlike: showing forgiveness, compassion and love. Our families may not always be filled with peace and joy, but as we see through the example of the Holy Family, God accompanies us through trial and tribulation. Mary and Joseph take the child, Jesus, and escape the cruelties of King Herod. Parents do all they can to protect their children. Parents make all sorts of sacrifices for the wellbeing of their children. It is in the deepest sense of love that parents will even discipline their children. They want them to be the best. They want them to succeed. They want them to do well in every aspect of their life. The first priority of all parents should be and must be the holiness of their children. Family time is important. How often does your whole family sit together – at a table – and eat together? How often does your whole family play together? How often does your whole family PRAY together? This Feast of the Holy Family is a good reminder for all of us to stay firm with the principles of family life. A family united together in God can overcome all calamities. A family united in God will bind itself together no matter what. Don’t be afraid to pray together. Moms and dads, you’ll be surprised what you’ll learn by listening to the prayers of the little ones!
I hope this very special Preface from the Masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary will serve as a source of prayer and reflection for you and your family during these days of Christmas.
May Christ, our Light, Peace, and Love fill you with His very presence,
It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and
everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and
eternal God.
For through the ministry of the Blessed Virgin You draw the families of
all peoples to faith in the Gospel.
The shepherds, bathed in your glory and enlightened by choirs of
Angels, acknowledged Christ as the Savior and became the firstfruits
of the Church from the people of Israel.
The wise men, inspired by grace and led by a shining star, entered a
lowly house, found the child with his Mother, and, as the firstfruits of
the Church from the Gentiles, worshiped him as God, proclaimed him
as King, and acknowledged him as Redeemer.
Through him the Angels of heaven offer their prayer of adoration as
they rejoice in your presence for ever.
May our voices be one with theirs in their triumphant hymn of praise.

THIS WEEK’S READING
See Page 14 for Next’s Week Readings
Sunday, Dec 26, 2021 FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY, AND JOSEPH Bless the children Holy families aren't necessarily picture-perfect. But they are faithful and consistent in their values and goals. Like Mary and Joseph and biblical parents before them, holy families consecrate their children early and often to the care of God. They do this by baptizing them and seeing to their sacramental preparation. They do this by praying for and with their little ones. They provide them a religious education and share faith-filled practices of compassion and charity. All the children in our lives look to us for love and acceptance, guidance and Christian example. Teach the children well.
TODAY'S READINGS: Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14; Colossians 3:12-21; Luke 2:41-52 (17A); or 1 Samuel 1:20-22, 24-28; 1 John 3:1-2, 21-24; Luke 2:41-52 (17C). “Once the child is weaned, I will take him to appear before the LORD and to remain there forever.”
Monday, Dec 27, 2021 FEAST OF JOHN, APOSTLE AND EVANGELIST He lived to tell the tale John the Apostle is credited with being the author of the Gospel of John. He is also believed to have been the “Beloved Disciple” of Jesus mentioned in that gospel and is presumed to have outlived the other apostles, perhaps being the only one to die of natural causes rather than martyrdom. Imagine being the last survivor, and the heartache he endured on losing his peers to violent deaths for their faith. Perhaps it was John’s job to live to tell the story—"that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name”—as he says in his final line. Take John’s mission to heart and embrace his good word today.
TODAY'S READINGS: 1 John 1:1-4; John 20:1a, 2-8 (697). “Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed.”
Tuesday, Dec 28, 2021 FEAST OF THE HOLY INNOCENTS, MARTYRS Children deserve protection Nowadays when we think of Christmas pageants, we envision adorable children in bathrobes dressed as shepherds. But in the Middle Ages, religious pageants were a serious business. The whole community gathered to enact mystery plays that told the stories of birth, death, resurrection, and the lives of the saints. It’s from such a mystery play that we get the haunting words and melody of “The Coventry Carol”—a song about King Herod’s slaughter of the Holy Innocents that asks plaintively, "What may we do to preserve . . . this poor youngling for whom we sing?" Pray today for children who continue to suffer and face certain death without our help.
TODAY'S READINGS: 1 John 1:5—2:2; Matthew 2:13-18 (698). “A voice was heard in Ramah, sobbing and loud lamentation; Rachel weeping for her children.”
Wednesday, Dec 29, 2021 FIFTH DAY WITHIN THE OCTAVE OF NATIVITY OF THE LORD; MEMORIAL OF THOMAS BECKET, BISHOP, MARTYR Choose God Everyone must at times make the choice of serving God or something less. Today we remember Saint Thomas Becket, bishop of Canterbury. Thomas was faced with such a dilemma when his friend the king, Henry II, continuously tried to interfere with church matters. Allowing the king to interfere with the church would have allowed Thomas to be in the king’s good graces.
Instead, Thomas chose to serve God above anything and anyone else, even at the cost of martyrdom. "When is constancy required," Thomas writes, "except under persecution. Are not friends then proved? If they always yield, how can they ever succeed? They must, one time or other, make a stand."
TODAY'S READINGS: 1 John 2:3-11; Luke 2:22-35 (202). “And you yourself a sword will pierce so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”
Thursday, Dec 30, 2021 SIXTH DAY WITHIN THE OCTAVE OF THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD Take your time to absorb Christmas Today we continue as a church to honor the feast of our Savior’s birth. It is day six in the octave of Christmas—the eight-day liturgical focus on the birth of Christ. The entrance of the Christ into human history is such a significant event that the church notes its magnitude by keeping our gaze on it through the specified readings, psalms, and prayers during these eight days. Take a moment today to allow the wonder of God-among-us to continue to sink in.
TODAY'S READINGS: 1 John 2:12-17; Luke 2:36-40 (203). “She gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.”
Friday, Dec 31, 2021 SEVENTH DAY WITHIN THE OCTAVE OF THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD Out with the new, in with the old The end of the year gives us pause to reflect on the past and change for the future. Typically, we find something new to embrace or resolve to do. But if it’s true that there’s really nothing new under the sun, then perhaps we should look to the old! This is exactly what the church does, as it moves into the new year, not with any newfound epiphany, but instead with a commitment to the very old-school value of peace. As we anticipate the World Day of Peace tomorrow, January 1, what are some deeply held and long-standing values that you would like to deepen during the coming year? How might you go old school?
TODAY'S READINGS: 1 John 2:18-21; John 1:1-18 (204). “In the beginning was the Word.”
Saturday, Jan 01, 2022 OCTAVE DAY OF THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD; SOLEMNITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY, THE MOTHER OF GOD; WORLD DAY OF PEACE Rocking with Mother Mary People in every age have their particular way to celebrate the new year. These days we might change old eating habits to be healthier; get on track financially; spend more time with family. But maybe this year it could be about what young Catholics refer to as "rocking with Mary," that is, getting to know the mother of Jesus on a deeper level. Understanding her courage, strength, and faithfulness can help us realize our own potential as bearers of the Good News. On her feast day and in the days ahead, reflect on Mary and strive to imitate her in bringing Good News to the world. TODAY'S READINGS: Numbers 6:22-27; Galatians 4:4-7; Luke 2:16-21 (18). “And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart.”

NEXT WEEK’S READING
Sunday, Jan 02, 2022 SOLEMNITY OF THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD The sanctity of home "Home is where the heart is" is an ancient proverb. Many folks find their deepest level of satisfaction and fulfillment in family life. But home is also where the hearth is: the place to which we come in from the cold to restore ourselves, where we put up our feet, sigh, and relax. Our homes are sacred to us; why not commend them to God? On Epiphany, we're invited to gather with our loved ones to bless the door, walls, and table of our dwelling. Compose your own blessing together or visit the USCCB's Blessing of the Home and Household on Epiphany for the rite of home blessing.
TODAY'S READINGS: Isaiah 60:1-6; Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6; Matthew 2:1-12 (20). “The star they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was.”
Monday, Jan 03, 2022 MEMORIAL OF THE MOST HOLY NAME OF JESUS Initial reflections Do you have anything monogrammed with your initials, perhaps towels or clothing? While monogramming is decorative, it also marks your belongings as yours. Jesus has a monogram too: “IHS,” which stands for the first three letters of the Greek spelling of the name of Jesus. Later the monogram was associated with the Latin phrase Iesus Hominum Salvator (Jesus Humankind’s Savior). There is power in the very name of Jesus and so Catholics venerate it. Perhaps you’ve seen this monogram on altars or vestments. Jesuits use the IHS monogram as the emblem of their society. You can bear his monogram too—by calling on his name and showing to the world that you belong to him.
TODAY'S READINGS: 1 John 3:22-4:6; Matthew 4:12-17, 23-25 (212). “And great crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan followed him.”
Tuesday, Jan 04, 2022 MEMORIAL OF ELIZABETH ANN SETON, RELIGIOUS Fed by the bread of life Raised Episcopalian, Elizabeth Ann Seton knew about Jesus multiplying loaves. On Sundays, she was a devout communicant at historic Trinity Church on Wall Street. But it wasn’t until Elizabeth went to Italy with her children and husband in 1803, attending Mass with Catholic friends, that she was drawn to the Real Presence in the Eucharist. “How happy would we be, if we believed what these dear souls believe,” she wrote, “that they possess God in the sacrament, and that He remains in their churches and is carried to them when they are sick!” In honor of Mother Seton, the first U.S-born saint, resolve to receive Communion more often this year.
TODAY'S READINGS: 1 John 4:7-10; Mark 6:34-44 (213). “He said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before the people.”
Wednesday, Jan 05, 2022 MEMORIAL OF JOHN NEUMANN, BISHOP Get to know your neighbors Today we celebrate the feast of Saint John Neuman, the first Redemptorist priest ordained in the United States and the first male U.S. citizen named a saint. Neumann, who emigrated to the United States from Bohemia as a young man desirous of being a
missionary, is revered for his tireless work among immigrants in the Northeast. He had a talent for understanding people and knowing what would bring them peace and comfort. Seek to emulate this holy man, who one of his fellow bishops observed, "had a solution for every question posed," and an "unruffled composure, which betokened deep humility and perfect self-control. I always regarded him as a saint.”
TODAY'S READINGS: 1 John 4:11-18; Mark 6:45-52 (214). “If we love one another, God remains in us, and [God’s] love is brought to perfection in us.”
Thursday, Jan 06, 2022 MEMORIAL OF ANDRÉ BESSETTE, RELIGIOUS The comeback kid of Québec Saint André Bessette’s remarkable life began when he was born into poverty in 1845. Orphaned by age 12, considered a failure in school, he practiced unskilled trades until his pastor encouraged him to join the Congregation of the Holy Cross. The congregation reluctantly admitted him, concerned about his frail health. Brother André defied expectations, living to age 91 and becoming famous throughout Québec for the many healings people experienced after visiting him in his role as a humble doorkeeper. Why not ask Brother André for his intercession, be it for mental, spiritual, relational, or physical healing?
TODAY'S READINGS: 1 John 4:19—5:4; Luke 4:14-22 (215). “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor.”
Friday, Jan 07, 2022 MEMORIAL OF RAYMOND OF PEÑAFORT, PRIEST Make straight your path Through its long history, the church has been careful to make a distinction between the canons, or rules, of the church and the laws of the state. The canons, from the Greek kanon for “straight,” were meant to guide Catholics toward the mission of the church—to keep them on the straight and narrow of faith, so to speak. There are 1,752 canons, many that pertain to all of us. For example, Canon 210: “All the Christian faithful must direct their efforts to lead a holy life and to promote the growth of the church and its continual sanctification, according to their own condition.” In honor of the patron saint of canon lawyers, Saint Raymond of Peñafort, do your best to follow the rules of the church and give witness to God’s saving love.
TODAY'S READINGS: 1 John 5:5-13; Luke 5:12-16 (216). “God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.”
Saturday, Jan 08, 2022 SATURDAY AFTER EPIPHANY Increasing Christ Tomorrow, the Baptism of the Lord, marks the end of the Christmas season and the beginning of Ordinary Time. The days, dates, and seasons of the church’s liturgical calendar focus the whole People of God on the same celebrations. During Advent we prepare. In Christmas we welcome. Lent is a time of reflection and repentance. Easter is new life. In Ordinary Time we celebrate the ongoing effects of God’s grace. So when “Silent Night” or “We Three Kings” is sung throughout the world, the air fills with the grace generated by God in our hearts. Sing a Christmas hymn today and know that the stars are singing with you.
TODAY'S READINGS: 1 John 5:14-21; John 3:22-30 (217). “He must increase; I must decrease.”

COLUMNA DEL PÁRROCO
Queridos hermanos,
voces cantando humildemente tu alabanza.

LECTURAS PARA HOY: Eclesiástico 3:2-6, 12-14; Colosenses 3:12-21; Lucas 2:41-52 (17A); o 1 Samuel 1:20-22, 24-28; 1 Juan 3:1-2, 21-24; Lucas 2:41-52 (17C).
