A Note from The Executive Director
Sometimes smart kids lose sight of their dreams when their current reality gets in the way. Their bright future becomes unattainable. When they are surrounded by high school drop-outs and low expectations or the need to help pay the bills, they are at-risk of losing sight of that bright future.
You and I both know it takes more than great ambition and wanting something better. It takes a learning environment, role models, hard work, and companions who share that ambition to succeed. Boys Hope Girls Hope is able to provide these opportunities for our scholars because of your contributions!
You have given them a tutor when nobody at home knew how to help with homework. You have given them the chance to hear directly from engineers, doctors, architects and other professionals who have the job they hope to have someday. You have prepared them for college with test preparation and college tours. You have given these students a chance to focus on their dreams.
Of course, Boys Hope Girls Hope could not provide the amazing wrap around services for all our scholars without you and our partners. We are so grateful for the support the entire Regis Jesuit High School community gives Boys Hope Girls Hope. Other partners include ACE Scholarships, Aurora Central High School, Aurora Youth Options, Food Bank of the Rockies, Smiles for a Lifetime, and Mental Health America of Colorado.
And then there are our amazing volunteers! They mentor, tutor, pull weeds, make dinner, wash windows, crunch numbers, ask for auction items - the talent pool is unlimited! Thank you to all of you that commit to helping our scholars in one way or another. You have turned these students into scholars - scholars who were willing to put in the hard work, but needed the right environment to succeed. Scholars on the path to graduate from high school, then graduate from college, and ultimately achieve their dreams of a brighter future. Because of you, four scholars graduated from high school in May, 2015. They all accomplished their goal of being the first in their families to graduate from high school and go on to college. This year, we have eight scholars in college and we expect to double that number next year. Thank you for supporting these scholars so they can reach their dreams of a brighter future.
We continue to grow, serving 68 scholars this year and more scholars graduating each year and going on to college.
Thank you! Sincerely,
Mary Frances Tharp
Breaking The Cycle Of Poverty Through Education The scholars of Boys Hope Girls Hope have a world of potential hidden within them. Education is the key that opens that door. Helping promising children realize their potential - this is the core of what Boys Hope Girls Hope does. Providing an excellent education is indispensable to showing children what they are capable of and empowering them to achieve it. Boys Hope Girls Hope partners with families who recognize the opportunities available to meet their child’s needs by offering a long-term continuum of support to equip each scholar with the tools and access they need to achieve their full potential. Boys Hope Girls Hope of Colorado has three programs – Residential, Academy and College. The thirteen scholars in the Residential program live in either the Boys Hope or Girls Hope home year round. Scholars are enrolled in college-preparatory schools best suited to their needs. The forty-eight Academy scholars attend Aurora Central High School. The focus of both the Residential and Academy programs is high school graduation, college acceptance and attendance. There are currently eight scholars receiving individualized support and scholarships in the College program. Programming is year-round. In the Residential and Academy programs, scholars receive personalized instruction from carefully recruited, screened and trained mentors and tutors. Between semesters, they participate in a rich array of age-appropriate academic enrichment and college preparatory programs and activities. These summer experiences make the idea of going to college real to them, and to prepare them for success as college students. During the school year, scholars participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities designed to enhance their educational experience. Athletics, drama, dance, theatre and music, science fairs and travel are only a few of the ways that our scholars learn to express themselves and deepen their understanding of the world around them. The scholars engage in volunteer projects in the community that show them how to use their education for the good of others. And they receive academic, financial, social and spiritual support until the completion of their college education and beyond. All scholars admitted into Boys Hope Girls Hope receive after-care services designed to meet their individual needs upon completion of our residential program, usually at the time of high school graduation. This support includes financial assistance for college tuition, books, room and board.
