Education in the OLSH Tradition: Faith-Filled, Reverence Relationships, Pursue Excellence, Touch the Hearts of Others

Dear Family and Friends of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College,

It was in 1938, that the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart opened Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College Bentleigh in order to educate young women in South East Melbourne. The actual beginnings were as a commercial college for four students in one room of St Paul’s Church. Numbers grew, so it subsequently moved to the cottage in Robert Street which had been the original Convent. (OLSH College Bentleigh Archives)

The above excerpt from the writings within the College archives speaks of the beginnings of our College. This year we are privileged to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the foundation of the College. The vision, commitment and dedication of the OLSH sisters who were trail blazers in the provision of catholic education for young women is the story of our journey here at Bentleigh. Ash Wednesday Last Wednesday we celebrated the beginning of Lent – forty days that take us on a special journey towards Easter. As a College community we gathered in the Hall to reflect on our lives and the ways we are called to become more like the person of Jesus. Once we had written down the areas of our lives we felt called to change, we burned our papers in the fire, symbolic of our prayers rising to God. We each then received the ashes on our foreheads with these accompanying words, “Turn towards Jesus and be faithful to the Gospel.”

Today we also remembered the anniversary of the death of Mother Marie Louise Hartzer (right). Having been a wife, mother and widowed far too young, Marie Louise knew the struggles of life. Like Marie Louise, we will do our very best in these weeks of Lent to raise awareness and monies for those in greatest need in our world. This year, all monies raised during our Lenten fundraising will be split between the works of the OLSH Sisters in Africa and Caritas’ Project Compassion appeal. So what is on the horizon for Faith and Mission at OLSH?

• the launch of Vinnies for 2013 • the formation of a student Justice and Peace team • the Year 11 and 12 retreats, and • our Holy Week Mass

Blessings on you and yours,

Sr. Megan Donohue fdnsc Assistant Principal, Faith and Mission

We remember

We pray for the repose of the souls of:

Teresa Wallace, Grandmother of Millie Dubout (Year 12)

Joy Hair, Grandmother of staff member Suzy Pask

May Our Lady of the Sacred Heart hold them gently in her care

and may their souls rest in peace.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, pray for us!

Student Wellbeing Planner - a Lifelong Skill for Independent Functioning The College this year has provided students with a new planner called the Student Wellbeing Planner. There is valuable information to be found in it, including: study techniques, time management, personal health, examinations skills and relationships. Take the time to have a look through your daughter’s planner. In coming newsletters we will provide parents with useful tips on ways that you can assist your daughter with her learning through the effective use of her planner. The following are some tried and proven ‘musts’ for effective and efficient planner usage: • The students and their planners must be inseparable partners at school and be brought home each night. • In every class, all work set and the date that it is due should be recorded; this must be done immediately their teacher tells them; don’t wait till afterwards, it’s too easy to forget. Students should write it in the ‘Priorities/Due In’ column and also record it on their ‘Forward Year Planner’. • After school, before leaving for home each night, girls should look at the home learning that has been recorded in their planner during the day for each subject and then take the required books and folders home. It is important to look extra closely on Friday nights before the weekend. • If girls haven’t a great deal of home learning to do on a particular night, they should look ahead in their ‘Forward Year Planner’ for what is coming up, and make an early start, especially on assignments. They may start revising for an upcoming test next week, do extra study to add depth to their understanding, or additional reading. • That night or before they leave for school the next morning, it is a good idea is to check what is coming up for the day ahead. Any preparations or pre-reading required? Any learning due in? Any sport or music practice? When they know this, they can plan their day more effectively. • Every Sunday night, students should spend 15 minutes planning their upcoming week in the ‘Priorities/ Due In’ and ‘Things to do’ sections. Also, on individual days highlight work that is due in. This puts them in control and reduces their anxiety. • When they have assignments, essays or tests coming up, they should look in the ‘Index’ of their planner for the focus that will help their efforts. The foci will cover most of their needs and positively develop their lifelong learning habits; they teach students what to do when they don’t know what to do.

City of Glen Eira- Getting Youth Involved Plugged In is a music program for young people interested in learning about the recording process. Held at the Youth Information Centre’s very own recording studio, Plugged In runs once a week for nine sessions during the school term. Students gain valuable experience and learn how to set up and run recording sessions. The program is free for young people who live, work or study in the City of Glen Eira. For more information about Plugged In, or to register your interest please contact Tanya at Youth Services on 9524 3676. Youth Leadership Team 2013 Glen Eira City Council Youth Services is currently recruiting for our 2013 Youth Leadership Team. The Youth Leadership Team (YLT) is a group of dynamic young people who are interested in further developing their leadership skills and organising events for young people in Glen Eira. The program runs from February until December and participants organise youth events such as Battle of the Bands, Youth Art Expo and also advocate for a local cause. Members receive training in Event Management, Occupational Health and Safety and Leadership skills and are encouraged to use their skills to be leaders in their local communities. There is no cost to be involved in the Youth Leadership Team. Entries close February 2013. Youth Art Expo 2013 Glen Eira City Council Youth Services is hosting its annual Youth Art Expo to celebrate National Youth Week in 2013. Feedback we have received from past Youth Art Expos suggested we provide schools and students with more time to prepare their entries. We are therefore pleased to announce that the 2013 Youth Art Expo will be held at the Caulfield Park Pavilion, on Thursday, 18 April 2013. All entries to the expo will be in the running to win prizes, in either the Junior section (10 – 15 years old) or the Senior section (16 – 25 years old). Please email Ms Oro [email protected] if you are interested in any of the above programs.

Sports News Year 7 Swimming Carnival On Wednesday, 13 February, the Year 7 OLSH girls had their Swimming Carnival at GESAC and were lucky to have great weather. MUSIC DANCE DRAMA

IMPRO ZONE As part of their work in Drama this year, Year 8 students attended a performance entitled Impro Zone on Monday, 11 February.

Impro Zone is an exciting and motivating performance that illustrates and inspires creativity and risk taking. Built around the fundamental skills of improvisation – spontaneity, character and scene building – Impro Zone practically demonstrates skills which can be applied to any chosen area of improvisation, including Theatresports.

Our Year 8 students were treated to a wonderful demonstration of improvisation and several students participated in some of the activities with the actors. COMMEDIA DELL’ARTE PERFORMANCE

Year 7 students attended a performance demonstrating the performance style of Commedia dell’Arte on Monday, 18 February. Commedia dell’Arte is a form of Italian Mask Theatre based on strong characters and improvisation. It has played an important role in the history of theatre and especially comedy. The students found the performance both entertaining and instructive, enhancing their enjoyment of Drama studies, and providing a springboard for their own Commedia performances this term.

VOCAL AND INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC LESSONS Our Instrumental Music program gives students the opportunity to become proficient in playing an instrument of their choice, thus developing and exploring their talents, while also experiencing personal fulfilment. As part of their musical experience, students are also given the opportunity to participate in an ensemble, band or choir, promoting a sense of belonging to a community of musicians and providing the exhilarating experience of performing. The instrumental staff at OLSH currently offer lessons, either individual or group, in voice, guitar, strings, drums/percussion, piano (individual only), flute and clarinet. Further details about tuition and an application form to learn an instrument in 2013 are available from the College office. We look forward to welcoming new students into our vibrant Instrumental program in 2013.
