Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College
Dear Family and Friends,
It is with a great sense of pride that we celebrate our students’ wonderful achievements over the past two weeks. Firstly, the outstanding result of our Swimming and Diving Team in attaining 1st place in the SCSA Carnival where so many talented and dedicated swimmers and divers gave their all. Congratulations to all involved and special acknowledgement of Aimee Grella (Year 8) on her record in the Junior Butterfly. Three of our talented Year 11 art students, Serena Hart, Madeline Crockett, Jazmin Oakley and from Year 12 2016, Raphaela Alexopolous, had their pieces included in the Catholic Education Melbourne’s Visual Arts Exhibition – a wonderful tribute to them. And to Mia Tulloch, Issoudun, who represented OLSH College at the Head of the Schoolgirls Regatta at Barwon River and won the Year 9 Single Scull C final. All of these remarkable young women show us what is possible when we aim high. It can be a challenge to set goals and then do everything it takes to achieve them. The feeling of satisfaction when you do your absolute best and achieve success is one to celebrate and savour. As we near the end of Term 1 it is timely to recognise what a wonderful start to the year it has been. So many opportunities for growth in a vast array of circumstances and activities are available to our girls. Early in Term 2 our joint Musical Production with De La Salle will be another time for us to see the talents of so many of our young people. We would love to have each performance of The Addams Family sold out – so buy your tickets now http://www.drumtheatre.com.au/events/4186/the-addams-family-the-musical/14387. Thank you to our families for your support in attending the many events on our calendar and for transporting your daughters to training, rehearsals and other meetings before and after school, without you all that they achieve would not be possible.
Store up treasures for yourselves in heaven. For wherever your treasure is, there will your heart be too.
Matthew 6: 20-21

St Patrick’s Day Mass
On Friday 17 March we were fortunate to be invited to the
St Patrick’s Day Mass at the Cathedral in the city. Many
different schools and colleges were there, with their banners,
ready to celebrate this wonderful day! Archbishop Denis Hart
celebrated the Mass and it was very calm and beautiful. The
choir included some amazing singers from different schools
and many students from all over Melbourne read some
readings and prayers.
After the Mass, there was a concert at
the Treasury Gardens. Both primary and
secondary school students were in the
audience and they enjoyed the games
and dancing. The crowd enjoyed some
great performances from the talented
students. It was a fantastic day and an
unforgettable experience!

Year 8 Retreat Reflections
Retreat Day took place at the Don Bosco Centre which is a lovely property with a chapel
and farm animals. I enjoyed the day as it let me experience the real freedom and
tranquility of the country, which is quite different to the city. The retreat day is one of the
most important days for me as it helped me to let go of any troubles, at home or at
school. I felt at peace with myself and the day improved my confidence because I felt
like I could express my feelings to God and listen to what He has to say and to guide me
on the right path.

The Outdoor Creation session opened our eyes to the beauty of the nature that
surrounds us. In this session we got to reflect on what we would, see, hear, smell and
feel in the environment compared to the environment at school. The highlight of this
experience has been to get away from the city life and reflect on the calming
surroundings of the retreat centre.

One of the activities on the Year 8 Retreat was Mandala colouring. Our focus was to
relax and undertake a task in a calm manner. We all had various patterns and coloured
them to create a representation of our mood and feelings. My highlight on the day was
being able to in my own headspace away from the normal school routine.

Rowing Success
Congratulations to Mia Tulloch, Issoudun, who represented OLSH at
the Head of the Schoolgirls Regatta at Barwon River last weekend.
Mia won the Year 9 Single Scull C final which is a great achievement.
Ignite The ‘Ignite’ program has once again commenced at the College for 2017.
This program is designed to offer opportunities for enhancement across the
curriculum. We run weekly workshops after school on Mondays in which the
students participate in collaborative learning exercises, quizzes, practical
experiments and much more.
Students in Year 7 and 8 have been invited to participate based on their results
across a range of tests, interviews and teacher nominations.
We are working towards fielding teams in the annual ‘Tournament of the Minds’
competition run by La Trobe University as well as participating in other academic
projects.

Wellbeing Matters
Bullying No Way!
The Athletics Carnival on March 17 was not only a day full of great House spirit, it was a
day we supported the National Day Against Bullying. Each House took a stand during
their House chant to declare that at OLSH College, bullying is not tolerated. Each
student wore wristbands as a reminder that at OLSH, we stand together. We work to
create an environment where each student has a deep sense of belonging, feels valued,
known and loved, and enables all members of the community to a have a deep care of
and for one another.
All Year 7 and 8 students have also received advice on what they can do if they see or
experience bullying. If you have concern about your child’s wellbeing please contact
your daughter’s Homeroom Teacher or Year Level Coordinator.

Debating 2017 The Debating season has once again commenced for our Intermediate and Senior
teams. This year we are competing in the Ormond division of the Debaters Association
of Victoria competition.
The teams will compete in five debates over the course of Terms 1, 2 and 3 in which
they will respond to seen and unseen topics. Participating in the Debating competition is
a great opportunity to develop public speaking skills and work collaboratively in a team
environment. Each team is supported by two teachers who assist in preparing and
rehearsing debate speeches. We warmly welcome new members, even those who have
never debated before. Should you wish to join a team or even observe a debate, please
speak to or email Mrs Wellard.
Congratulations to the senior team of
Piwainashe Kahonde, Maria Farag and
Georgia Sheppard (pictured) who beat
their opposition convincingly in the first
round with a clear three point win.
Special mention to the intermediate
team of Panayiota Blassis, Katharine
O’Hagan and Nickila De Silva who
were narrowly defeated by one point.

Meet New Staff Member…

I would like to send a heartfelt thank you to the OLSH College
community for making me feel so welcome - I feel like I have
come home.
I started my teaching career in Brisbane where I was very
privileged to work at Our Lady’s College at Annerley, a
Catholic secondary college established in 1964 by the Sisters
of St Joseph. I was Senior Coordinator of the College as well
as one of the senior mathematics teachers. After seven years
at OLA, I had a few years off to bring up two wonderful young
women.
In 2007, we all moved from Brisbane to Melbourne and found ourselves living at Black
Rock. After a few months to settle in, I started teaching at Huntingtower College at
Mount Waverley. Here I was happily in charge of the timetable, excursions and the
school calendar, as well as teaching senior mathematics, but when I saw the position
Director of School Operations at OLSH advertised, I knew that it was written for me.
When I am not here at school, in the summer, you are likely to find me on a start boat
for a sailing race or walking along the beach and in winter, I will be travelling to
somewhere warm.

Fire Carriers’ Conference OLSH Fire Carriers recently made the trip to the Annual Conference which was held in
Geelong. We arrived at Narana Aboriginal Cultural Centre where we met 100 students
from other Fire Carrier schools across the Diocese. We worked in different tribal groups
to generate ideas for Reconciliation Week. We were also introduced to an Aboriginal
elder called Aunt Betty who read us a story that she had written, about a platypus who
was made to be proud of its identity. Aunt Betty told us that the story was quite similar to
hers as she embraced her Aboriginal heritage. After lunch we performed the ‘Smoking
Ceremony’ with each school inducting their respective fire carriers. It was a very
emotional ritual that has been used by First Nation people for thousands of years.
We all boarded the bus buzzing with ideas as we made our way back to school. I would
like to thank Ms Lee Toll and Mr Mark Santospirito for organising the day.

OLSH College at St Catherine’s Fete
We had the pleasure of having an OLSH College
information table at last week’s St Catherine’s fete. The
weather was perfect as they celebrated 60 years since the
establishment of the school with a day full of fun with rides,
book and cake sales, as well as delicious food.
The OLSH College table was well positioned next to the
popular face painting stand and we gave out information
packs, newsletters, copies of the Flame magazine as well
as coloured pencil sets. We were kept very busy all day
speaking with families considering secondary school options
for their daughters. It was also lovely to see so many
Alumnae and current OLSH College families come up and
say hello.

Cultural Diversity Our Journey Our Stories, 18-26 March 2017
Each year the government celebrates the diversity of cultures living in our communities.
See https://culturaldiversityweek.vic.gov.au/ for a range of activities on offer.
The diversity at OLSH College is amazing. We may teach Chinese and Italian
languages and cultures, however, within our school population there are students born
in many different parts of the globe:
Australia America England Cambodia China
Colombia Egypt India Ireland Italy
Malaysia Mauritius New Zealand Philippines Russia
Singapore South Africa Sri Lanka
This year rather than celebrate with a range of food, we held a
traditional dance concert at lunchtime. Many thanks to Elena
Pilo Boyl Di Putifig who performed a Russian folk dance, Mollie
Delany who demonstrated her skills in Irish dancing (most
appropriate for St Patrick’s Day) and to Alycia Karis and Lillian
Casey who performed a Hungarian duet. All girls were dressed
in costume (pictured right) and danced their solo to well
deserved applause as their performances were amazing.
Following the solo performances, students collectively attempted
some Bollywood dancing and the Greek Zorba (below). The
room was alive with the sound of music and dance! There was a
lot of energy expended. (Many thanks to Ms Oro who supported
us in organising this activity).
Have you ever wished you could at least say hello and goodbye
in a foreign language? You can with “Hello Atlas” by Ben
Handicott. The book has expressions in 133 languages from all
continents of the world. Learning to pronounce the words is
only a tap away as there is an app recorded by a native speaker
of each language that can be “tapped” to match the text of the
book. Girls, pop into the library to see the interactive display and
have a turn using the book and app!

Catholic Art Exhibition This year four students from OLSH were selected for their artwork to be exhibited in the
Catholic Education Melbourne’s annual Visual Arts Exhibition which opened to the
public from Tuesday, 14 March to Saturday, 18 March 2017.
This exhibition showcases the high level of creativity amongst student artwork which is
evident in the broad range of impressive and inspiring works from so many primary and
secondary students in the Archdiocese of Melbourne.
The four students who had their artwork exhibited were Serena Hart, Madeline Crockett
and Jazmin Oakley who are currently in Year 11 and Raphaela Alexopoulos who
graduated from OLSH last year. The artwork at the exhibition was of a very high
standard and these girls should be very proud of having their work part of this public
exhibition.

Every member of the OLSH Diving Team was awarded a ribbon in their event, with
Olivia May (Year 11), Faith Harper (Issoudun), Jasmine Harper (Year 8), and Christie
Papadopoulos (Year 7) achieving first place in their divisions. Well done to all 25
members of the Diving Development Squad who spent Tuesday afternoons this term
learning new skills and attempting new dives.
Many thanks to all the staff and family members who attended the event to support the
competitors.
All 45 swimmers and 12 divers should be congratulated on their commitment to training
and on their outstanding team spirit, sportsmanship and success on the night. Fuelled
by a delicious and nutritious pasta dinner cooked and served by Mrs Jyotika Singh, the

House Athletics Carnival Duncan McKinnon Athletics track was the colourful scene of the OLSH
House Athletics Carnival last Friday. Staff and students wore their
House colours with pride as they enjoyed a day of excellent athletics
competition. In addition to sprinting, long distance running, throwing,
jumping, and cheering, there were novelty events, a St Patrick’s Day
themed treasure hunt, a delicious sausage sizzle, a Lenten Appeal
raffle, and a staff verses students relay. The National Day against
Bullying was also celebrated with wrist bands for all students and an
anti-bullying message included in each House’s Cheer.
Once again the level of student participation was high, so all
House Leaders and competitors should be congratulated.
Well done to Hartzer for winning the House Cheer
competition with their loud, red cheer, and to Chevalier for
the best anti bullying message.
As always, the much anticipated final race of the day was
the Invitational 100 metre sprint which
determines the fastest girl at OLSH.
Congratulations to Olivia May (Year 11) who
claimed the trophy this year. Special mention
to second and third placed runners, Tess
Jobling (Year 12) and Tadi Kahonde
(Issoudun). The results at the end were:
1st Hartzer
