OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL DENVER, COLORADO Food For Faith Living from the desk of Fr. Mark

The challenge of faith is ever present in our lives, soci-ety, world and hearts. The subtle threats to faith are rooted in the blind spot of our humanity. The human condition, subject to frailty and susceptible to unhealthy appetites and desires, is centered on the many ways loving self controls us. This is discomforting to us because we know, from our lives, how easy it is to be selfish, self-seeking, self-centered, self-righteous, etc., and not let it bother us until we are shamed by something which shows us how we’ve been living. It’s the chronic human blind spot because we easily justify much of what we do without seriously thinking through what acts of selfishness do to, and cause, for others. The 1st reading (Acts) challenges today’s lifestyle bluntly. It is a reminder of God’s call for all of us to care about others more than self, to work for the common good of all. This alone breaks down all the excuses for not doing so because we dismiss such ideas as political rather than Gospel. When we dismiss God’s Word in the public life of a society or community, we decide it only belongs in church and, perhaps, our homes. Sad is the truth of today’s popular lifestyle which centers on the personal and individual and ignores or rejects the communal and beyond. The sadness is magnified by the compound injuries inflicted, especially on the poor, ignorant, ignored and rejected people in our society, who have little representation and no influence or voice to be heard. God’s Word is a call to be their voice whenever possible. John’s letter (2nd reading) reminds all of us of the above: the love of God is this, that we keep God’s commandments. God’s request? Love one another. We can only do so when we live in the Spirit of truth. Do I accept this? Do I have doubts? Well, so did Thomas (Gospel). He didn’t believe and wouldn’t believe unless he saw for himself. We are all Thomas because we want assurances and certainty in heeding God’s Word. Were we given , we would be faith-ful and true. Would we? The Gospel concludes with this challenging truth: “Jesus Christ is the Son of God and through this belief we have life in His name.” Life in His Name is an invitation to do the things Jesus asked us to do. This is how we honor His Name and bless others. Give it some thought.

A small container of Holy Water is available at the Baptismal font for the: EASTER BLESSING OF HOMES

The head of the home conducts this blessing in the presence of the family by reciting:

BLESSING In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

Peace to this home and all who dwell here. Lord, we rejoice in the victory of your Son over death;

By rising from the tomb to new life He gives us new hope and promise.

Bless all the members of this household And surround them with your protection, And they may find comfort and peace in

Jesus Christ, the Paschal Lamb, Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

One God, for ever and ever. Amen. The head of the house may sprinkle those present and the home with holy water, during the sprinkling the head of house may say: Let this water call to mind our Baptism in Christ, Who by His death and Resurrection has

redeemed us. The head of the house concludes the rite by signing himself or herself with the Sign of the Cross and saying:

May Christ Jesus dwell with us, keep us from all harm, and make us one in mind and heart, now and for ever. Amen.
