Food for Faith Living from the desk of Fr. Mark Faith in the Covenant God made with the human family, beginning with Abraham and the Hebrews leading to Gentiles and the entire human race is brought to mind in the verses from Wisdom (1st reading). People found strength, through all adversities, hardships, slavery and oppression by remembering and relying on the faithfulness of God despite their sinfulness. It is a truth for every generation and every individual. St. Paul (2nd reading) strives to sum this up by focusing on the power of true faith. He recalls all that happened to Abraham and his descendants, because their faith brought them through every challenge and demand. Faith is the conviction of God’s faithfulness, nearness and involvement in the history of salvation. Such faith dismisses all fear. Which is the heart of today’s Gospel. Jesus uses several examples to teach us this truth, each reflecting the powerful, life-giving meaning of faith when Jesus says: “For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” In following Jesus, we are called to be witnesses and servants., Jesus uses the example of servants often. In every example, the conclusion is the same: “Blessed are those servants whom the master (GOD) finds vigilant on His arrival.” Vigilance found in their doing the tasks which the master left them. Equally true for the foolish servant who does not do what the master required. He is surprised by the master’s return and is punished severely. We are truly blessed with much when we take the time to reflect, remember and give thanks. The result is free choice to respond by doing God’s will, the essence of faith. The Assumption of Mary, Mother of Jesus (Aug. 15th) reminds us of all this. She is the model of true faith. Her willingness to do God’s will is expressed in one word, “Yes.” It is lived out by remaining true to her yes despite all the sorrows and sadness, challenges and difficulties her life contained. That is why Jesus honors all of us in following Mary’s example. He says, “Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and observe it.” Is this YOU? SICK LIST
