OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL DENVER, COLORADO Food For Faith Living from the desk of Fr. Mark
Today’s readings are reflections on the relationship between God and the people, between God and each one of us. The story is a resume of all Scripture, of all the revelations and actions of God in relating to us. Its’ message is clear and somber, beautiful and sad, hopeful and distressing, a judgment and a challenge to not repeat the sinfulness and evils of the past. But, reflections, soul-searching and sincerity are our free choice. We needn’t bother though the track record of history shows clearly: when we choose not to, we end up repeating attitude and behavior which do great violence to all life and personally. That’s a strong statement, a challenging one and the human inclination to comfort and control easily convinces people not to enter into changing, converting or becoming a new creation in Christ! Isaiah (1st reading) and the Gospel (Matthew) present near identical stories that express God’s truth and justice, humanity’s blind spots and frailty. Both depict the faithful labor of a landowner (God) in producing a fruitful vineyard with regular abundant harvests which are entrusted to the people. Through their self-righteousness and self-seeking, they betray the landowner and his expectations (bountiful harvests). Time and again the landowner forgives and relents from punishment. Ultimately, Isaiah and Jesus both express God’s decision: the vineyard will be taken away and given to foreigners and strangers. Christians have taken much comfort from these depictions, content that God abandoned the Chosen people and blessed those who believe in Jesus Christ. God doesn’t abandon anyone. God is ever calling people to conversion, to faithfulness in fulfilling the will of God, communally and personally. We look at our world, our nation, our church and ourselves and it is obvious much needs to change before the vineyard of God produces the rich harvest God desires. We continue to ravage the vineyard with endless violent attitudes and actions. All any person can do to alter this is heed Paul (2nd reading). It is a call to follow Jesus and bless others with one’s precious gift of self, a call to love and peace, honesty and justice, forgiveness and reconciliation, generosity and mercy. That a person freely chooses to do so is the path to the kingdom, is the way we become God’s daughters and sons.

“Giving up doesn’t always mean you are weak. Sometimes it means you are strong enough to let go.” -Author un-
We have been asked to pray for Pope Francis:
Weep not for what you have lost, fight for what you have.
Weep not for what is dead, fight for what was born in you.
Weep not for the one who abandons you, fight for who is with you.
Weep not for those who hate you, fight for those who want you.
Weep not for your past, fight for your present struggle.
Weep not for your suffering, fight for your happiness.
With things that are happening to us, we begin to learn that
nothing is impossible to solve, just move forward.
We pray for the Holy Father that the heavenly Mother intercedes for him and protects
him in his ministry:
Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee, blessed art thou among women and
blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us
sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Please pass this request on.

RESPECT LIFE Blow the trumpet in Zion! Proclaim a fast, call an assembly. Gather
the people, notify the congregation. Assemble the elders; gather the children and the
infants at the breast... Let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep and say, "Spare, O
Lord, your people." — Joel 2:15-17 STVDP In mid-September we deposited a $2,000 bonus received from St. Joseph’s Table. Many lives will be touched by the charities receiving these funds because of the hard work and diligence of those who care. Thank you immensely “Patience is power. Patience is not an absence of action; rather it is ’timing’ it waits on the right time to act, for the right principles and in the right way.” -Fulton J. Sheen ALUMNI NEWS Mt.
