Humility - this is a word that is very approachable,
but as we dig into it, we realize that it is much more
intense than first imagined. The Latin etymology of
this word as it is used in the life of the Church has a
parallel in "meekness," according to the Latin lexicon
it is derived from humilis meaning "lowly or humble,"
literally defined as "on the ground," and derived from
the noun humus "earth." How’s that for a language
lesson? Sorry for being a nerd but there is a connec-
tion.
Have you ever spoken of someone as being “well
grounded?” This description has a positive connota-
tion for being balanced and stable and even, “down
to earth.” The link that exists between humility and
our deeper understanding continues to unfold.
I like to use a simple definition for humility when the
word is being used in a spiritual context. Humility,
the accurate understanding of one’s self in relation-
ship to God and to neighbor, and to live in accord
with that proper understanding. When one strives
to be humble they succumb less easily to the tempta-
tions of pride. This is very important because pride is
understood to be the “hinge” sin upon which all sin
hangs (like a door).
Take the elaborations from above and apply them to
our first reading which encourages humility in the
face of vanity, the second reading which reinforces
purification, honesty and authenticity in the face of
sin, and the Gospel which highlights the pitfalls of
greed for earthly things while forgetting about the
perduring heavenly treasure.

Litany of Humility
*pray at your own risk, the demands of humility touch many areas
of our life of faith.
O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me.
From the desire of being esteemed, deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being loved, deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being extolled, deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being honored, deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being praised, deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being preferred to others, deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being consulted, deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being approved, deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being humiliated, deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being despised, deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of suffering rebukes, deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being calumniated, deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being forgotten, deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being ridiculed, deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being wronged, deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being suspected, deliver me, Jesus.
That others may be loved more than I,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be esteemed more than I,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That, in the opinion of the world,
others may increase and I may decrease,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be chosen and I set aside,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be praised and I unnoticed,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be preferred to me in everything,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may become holier than I, provided that I may
become as holy as I should,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

HS Road Trip Fun Our first high school road trip was a great success!!
Last Saturday, 15 teens, seven adults and Fr. Trowbridge
headed to Wisconsin for a road trip! The group stopped in
Lake Geneva for breakfast
before heading to Holy Hill
in Hubertus. Everyone en-
joyed the beautiful grounds
and Basilica of Holy
Hill. Many even made
the trek up the 178 steps
to the top of the scenic
tower! It was great to
see the Joan of Arc
Chapel at Marquette and celebrate Mass at the
Basilica of St. Josaphat in Milwaukee. The day ended
with dinner at Kopp’s and, of course, custard!!
Thanks to all who attended and especially
our wonderful drivers and chaperones!
Make a Difference this Year! We are seeking enthusiastic, energetic,
authentic adults and teens who want
to share their faith with the young
people of our parish. Call Lauren (RE)
or Jennifer (YM) in the office at

Daily Marriage Tips www.foryourmarriage.org
• Long car rides provide
time for meaningful conversation.
Go for a drive today and find out
what is on your spouse’s mind.
• When feeling overly negative, write
down something positive about
your spouse.
• Daily challenges in family life
sometimes seem unbearable and
impossible to overcome. However,
God leads us to sainthood in the
midst of these crosses, so remember
to ask Him for strength.
• Summer is the time for fun! Find a
church-sponsored barbeque or festi-
val in your area and attend it with
your spouse.
• Music is life-giving and it unites us
with others. Listen to an album
that you and your spouse enjoy, or
play some music together!
Help with Church Flowers Do you love flowers? If so, we could use
your help setting up the beautiful flowers
in the church.
The time commitment is only about 2 hours, twice a
month. Please call Laura Nick in the parish office if
interested - training is provided.
Knights of Columbus Marian Prayer Service - Saturday, August 10 On Saturday August 10th, the Knights of Columbus will be hosting a Marian prayer service at
6:45am in the church as part of Knights’ Marian Prayer Program. Deacon Howard and Deacon
Don (both Knights) will be leading it and it will conclude before the start of 8:00am Mass.
The Knights’ current Marian prayer program pays particular attention to the suffering of today’s
Christians in the Middle East and features the icon of Our Lady Help of Persecuted Christians.
(pictured left). This icon depicts the Blessed Mother, with the Child Jesus over her heart, spread-
ing her protective mantle around a representative gathering of recent Christian martyrs - men and
women, young and old, from East and West; priests, religious and laypersons, including one of
the six priest-members of the Knights of Columbus who were killed by the Mexican government
in the first half of the 20th century. The four crosses represent an “ecumenism of blood” among
martyrs of Roman and Eastern Catholicism, as well as those of Coptic, Armenian, Syriac and Orthodox traditions.
Let us pray to Our Lady Help of Persecuted Christians that she take to her divine Son the sufferings endured by some just
because they are Christians.
