A Note From The Pastor…
This month is Respect Life Month, with this Sunday being
Respect Life Sunday. There will be a Holy Hour this weekend,
Sunday Evening, October 4th, from 7PM un"l 8PM in the
Church. You know respect for human life is in serious trouble
when the media seems to care more about the killing of Cecil,
the lion, than late-term abor"ons, and the selling of organs of
aborted babies. Please consider coming to pray for an end to
abor"on, and for a greater respect for all human life.
With this Sunday also being October 4th, we celebrate the
Memorial of St. Francis. We will have a “Blessing of Pets” Ceremony at 12:30PM in
the west parking lot by the main school entrance.
This week’s readings are about marriage and the family — they are quite
challenging. In the Gospel, the Pharisees are trying to trap Jesus. They ask Him: “Is
it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?” If Jesus says that divorce should not be
allowed, then the Pharisees hope that King Herod will have Jesus killed, just as Herod
had John the Bap"st imprisoned for speaking out against Herod’s divorce and
remarriage with his brother’s wife. Later, Herod had John the Bap"st killed.
Jesus tells the Pharisees that, while it is true that Moses allowed divorce, such
permission was a ‘concession’, because of the ancient Israelites’ “hardness of
hearts;” but from the beginning of crea"on, divorce was not permi$ed. Jesus then
goes on to quote from the Book of Genesis in our first reading.
This is why the Church will not change her teaching on divorce and remarriage:
Because we have the very words and teaching of Jesus saying that that is not
permi$ed. Please note that divorce in itself is not necessarily sinful, if one has a
serious reason. The problem is with marrying again without an Annulment.
I highly encourage anyone who is divorced to inves"gate the possibility of an
Annulment. Please give me a call. You may have heard that Pope Francis has
reformed the Annulment process. Please also know that the process of Annulment
is more than simply a legal act of the Church: it is also a "me and process for
healing.
Let us pray for stronger marriages, families, and a greater respect for all human
life.
Blessings,
Fr. Paul
