January 7, 2018, The Epiphany of the Lord 3
A Note From The Pastor… I hope that you all had a very Happy New Year with family and
friends, ready to enter a New Year with a closer relationship with
Jesus Christ. New beginnings are always so exciting: there can be
some fear and apprehension, but when we walk with the Lord, un-
limited possibilities can open up. We only need to be open to the
action of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
On that note, I want to remind you that our Evangelization Com-
mittee continues to meet twice a month; we’ve been meeting now
for about six months. Largely, we’ve been in “start-up mode,”
taking a look at the idea of evangelization, as well as evaluating
possible programs for implementation. We are also taking inven-
tory of our parish programs. Once completed, we will begin mak-
ing decisions about implementing changes and programs to make
our parish even more inviting and welcoming than it already is.
We hope to attract more people to our parish, and encourage cur-
rent parishioners to be more involved.
I am looking for one or two persons to take over the ministry of washing the altar linens. This
would be a behind-the-scenes ministry of reverently washing the linens used on the altar or during
Mass. It is a little bit different than doing regular laundry because these linens are used for a sa-
cred purpose. Please contact me at the rectory or email me if you would like to take over this im-
portant ministry. I would also like to thank Gloria Askew, and more recently Diane Wilczenski,
who have been washing the altar linens.
I thought I would repeat here an impromptu announcement I made at Masses a few weeks ago; in-
deed a few people thanked me for the announcement. Please be mindful, especially during the flu
season, that some people may not want to engage in the Sign of Peace at Mass. Such persons are
not being anti-social; rather, they have a very real concern about germs. This also extends to the
holding of hands during the Our Father: People should not be forced or even encouraged to hold
hands, again, because of germs, or perhaps they simply do not want to pray in that way as the
Church’s rubrics do not permit the holding of hands during the Our Father. Also, if you are sick or
not feeling well, please do not receive the Precious Blood from the chalice.
This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of the Epiphany. The word ‘epiphany’ comes from the
Greek word epiphaneia, meaning manifestation: Jesus is now being manifested to the whole
world represented by the Magi. We will have a Holy Hour Sunday at 3:00 PM in the Church, con-
cluding with benediction at 4:00 PM. Please see the bulletin for additional details. All are wel-
come.
Blessings, Fr. Paul

Liturgy Of The Word For
Children Prayer Leaders
Needed Those of you who a#end the
9AM and 11AM Masses, see the
children being dismissed with an
adult. They are going to the first
classroom adjacent to the Parish
Center. There they hear the
readings in a simpler form. The
Prayer Leader discusses with the
child the meaning of the readings,
and how they can live out its’
message in the coming week.
The Usher signals the Prayer
Leader, that the homily in Church
is finished, which gives just enough
"me to say a simple Creed, their
prayer inten"ons, and get back to
Church during the collec"on.
We could use more Prayer
Leaders. If you think this is
something you would like to do,
let anyone of the Prayer Leaders
know, and Diana Jurista will
contact you to give you more
details.

December 31, 2017 • The Feast Of The Holy Family Of Jesus, Mary, And Joseph 7
A Prayer —
Eucharis!c
Adora!on Lord Jesus, please touch my indifference to You in the Holy Eucharist. Touch my faith and deepen it more than
ever before. “I
believe.” “Help my unbelief.” Let me experience the power of Your love from this most holy of
sacraments. “To whom shall I go, You have the words of Eternal Life.” Heal my sense of rou"ne, and make me
appreciate this “Pearl of Great Price.” Amen.
O Sacrament most holy,
O Sacrament Divine!
All praise and thanksgiving be
every moment Thine!
O Crucified and Risen Jesus,
You are “the image of the
Invisible God, the first born
of all creatures.”
Through the sanc!fying grace of
Your redeeming sacrifice,
We have “become heirs in hope
of Eternal Life.”
Renew us in Your divine image
as we strive to be frui'ul
branches in the Mys!cal Body of Your Church.
Amen.
What Is Eucharis"c Adora"on?
Jesus waits for us in this Sacrament of Love. “In the sacred Host, He is present, the true treasure,
always wai!ng for us. Only by adoring this Presence do we learn how to receive Him properly.”
Understood simply, Eucharis"c Adora"on is adoring or honoring the Eucharis"c Presence of Christ. In
a deeper sense, it involves “the contempla!on of the Mystery of Christ truly present before us.”
During Eucharis"c Adora"on, we “watch and wait”, we remain “silent” in His Presence, and open
ourselves to His Graces which flow from the Eucharist… By worshipping the Eucharis"c Jesus, we become
what God wants us to be! Like a magnet, the Lord draws us to Himself, and gently transforms us.
In its’ fullest essence..…Eucharis"c Adora"on is “God and Man reaching out for each other, at the
same !me!”
Do something special during this New Year, please consider coming to Eucharis"c Adora"on on Thurs-
days at 1PM. Come, spend some "me with the Lord, and receive His blessings! He is wai"ng for you!

January 7, 2018, The Epiphany of the Lord 9
Ask A Priest Q: What does the church say about animals having souls? Many people want to believe their beloved pets
are wai"ng for them with other loved ones. Can animals go to Heaven when they die?
A: Through the course of this discussion, I will be quo"ng extensively from the Catechism of the Catholic
Church. The numbers in the parentheses are the corresponding paragraph numbers from the Catechism. I
also feel it necessary to apologize for the not so inclusive language of the text. Please know that when the
Catechism refers to ‘man’ or ‘he/him’, this includes the en"rety of the human race.
“Soul refers to the innermost aspect of man, that which is of greatest value to him, that by which he is the
most especially in God’s image: soul signifies the spiritual principle in man” (363).
In other words, a soul is a special gi= from God. In Genesis chapter 2, God creates man and woman in his Im-
age and a=er his Likeness. That Image and Likeness… that is what we refer to as the soul. So as you can see,
human beings are not given a soul because they are made in the Image and Likeness of God; they are in the
Image and Likeness of God because they have a soul! This is an important dis"nc"on for us as we answer the
ques"on; just because something is alive does not mean that it has a soul.
Now, why exactly is having a soul such a wonderful thing? Well, the Church teaches us that “every spiritual
soul is immortal; it does not perish when it separates from the body at death, and it will be reunited with the
body at the final Resurrec"on” (366). Our soul is what enables us to reach the a=erlife! We can look forward
to eternal life with God because our souls, created in God’s Image, are eternal like God. Animals, unfortu-
nately, do not have souls, and therefore, they are not eternal. When they die here on Earth, that is the end
of them.
So why did God even create the animals, if they have no chance at Heaven? “Animals, like plants and inani-
mate beings, are by nature des"ned for the common good of past, present, and future humanity” (2415).
“God entrusted animals to the stewardship of those whom he created in his own image” (2417).
All of crea"on, therefore, is given to humanity to use for our well-being. We are to use natural resources
(plants and animals included) for our food, clothing, and shelter. Some animals are able to be domes"cated
and trained to make our tasks easier and/or to provide companionship. As it says in the Eucharis"c Prayer
o=en recited at Mass: You entrusted the whole world to his care, so that in serving you alone, the Creator, he
might have dominion over all creatures.
This does not mean that we can do whatever we want, however! We need to respect the dignity of all creat-
ed things, and we need to share the natural resources with all those created in God’s Image, especially the
poor and marginalized, and all our future genera"ons.
Finally, we must remember that heaven is not a place, like Miami or Las Vegas. It is not a loca"on here on
Earth, or on some distant planet; it is not “up in the clouds” nor “under the earth.” Heaven is not a spa"al
loca"on, but rather a condi!on, a state of being.
“To live in Heaven is to be with Christ” (1025). “They are like God for ever, for they see him as he is, face to
face” (1023). In heaven, we will receive the Bea"fic Vision; we will see God face to face; all of our longings,
all of our desires: these will all be fulfilled in his Presence!
So what should you say when the family dog dies, and your six year old asks, “When I go to Heaven, will I get
to see Fluffy again?” I would look her in the eye and answer, “Swee"e, if you need Fluffy to be in Heaven for
you to be happy, Fluffy will be there wai"ng!” This way, you can avoid lying to her, and s"ll be able to give
her some consola"on. Truly, the Bea"fic Vision of God will flood us with the fullness of happiness. What our
pets are provide imperfectly here on Earth, the Lord will provide in super-abundance in Heaven.
Peace,
Fr. Mike
