Richard Warren Lewis in The Scavengers and Critics of the

warren Commission maintains that her death was a natural one:

A record of her autopsy is on f i le t ParklandHospital. She died of heart fai lure, brought on bycalcium deposits so large that they choked her heart saction. The attending physician also indicated she

had a mild case of diabetes, pneumonia a lung in fection, ulcers of her throat and cataracts. He says

there i s no question about the cause of her death.

Notice of Mrs. Robert s death, published in the Dallas Morning

News January 10 1966 appears to substantiate Lewis s findings,

stat ing that:

Mrs. Roberts apparently was seized by a heartattack a t her home ••• She was rushed to Parkland

Hospital, where she died at 5:15 A.M.

The Morning News art ic le goes on to mention the coincidence that

Parkland Hospital was also the scene of the deaths of both President

Kennedy and Lee Harvey Oswald.

Given the available informationi t

appears that Mrs. Earlene

Roberts died a naturai. ~ · d \ : h The Committee might, however consider

obtaining the record of her autopsy mentioned by Lewis as being on

f i le at Parkland.

TO FBI Office--Austin, Texas DATE: 19 Decembe r 1963

FROl\I Mrs. Lee Dannelly--St Hq, SSvc, Austin, Texas

SUBJECT : OSWALD, Lee Harvey (41-114-39-532)

At your request,   following i s a resume of information the undersigned furnishedto Mr. Ronnie Dugger, publisher of the 11Texas Observer and representative ofa Washington, D.c., daily newspaper, on 17 December 1963.

Mr. Dugger cal led t this Headquarters t approximately 4:30 PM, 17 Dec 6 ; heshowed me an identif ication card from the Department of Public Safety and statedhe wished to obtain any information I knew relat ive to a visi t by LEE HARVEY

OSWALD to this Headquarters. Before I gave him any information, my supervisor,

Lt. Col. William Boyd Sinclair walked up to my desk and the two greeted oneanother. Colonel Sinclair asked Mr . Dugger to come on in to his office and

Mr. Dugger told him that as soon as he asked me a few questions he would comein.

Mr. Dugger asked i f I could furnish in detail everything in connection with thevis i t of LEE HARVEY OSW LD to this Headquarters and I advised him as follows :On 24 Nov 63 (Sunday), i t was announced over TV that t that time there was nodefini te record as to Mr. Oswald's whereabouts from May 1963 unt i l the time ofthe assasination of President e n n e d y ~ I was t home t the time and I calledColonel Sinclair and advised him I was positive this man had been to our of f ice, approximately 6 or 8 weeks prior to that date (24 Nov 63). I could not recal l

any information that would make me positive about a specific but that Iwas positive that i t had been on a Wednesday. I have been having quite a bi t

of trouble with my back and legs for quite sometime, and the only times Ihave gone to town during my lunch hour was on our pay days to cash a check--

we are p i ~ on al ternate Wednesdays. I was a few minutes la te getting back

to the office that day and Mr. Oswald was waiting to see me when I got back.

Mr. Oswald stated that he had jus t come from the Governor's office to t ry to

straighten out his discharge from the Marine Corps. which had been under

other than honorable conditions. The Governor's office told him they did

not have anything to do with such things but th  t maybe th is off ice would beable to ss is t him. Mr. Oswald stated that t the time he was given the

discharge under other than honorable conditions he was told that i f helived an upright l i fe for the next two years, he could then make application

to have the type of discharge c h a n g e d honorable.11

He told me that he washaving diff iculty in obtaining a job, and holding a job, with that type

discharge. Also. he said i t was embarrassing to his family. I asked himwhere he was registered and he said he registered in Florida but that he

was l iving in Ft. Worth t the present time. I checked our locator f i le forHARVEY OSWALD the name he gave me), but did not check any of the o therOSWALD cards for possible identif ication since I presumed he was correct and

was registered in Florida. I did not find a card for HARVEY OSWALD. We dohave a card for LEE HARVEY OSWALD. Mr. Oswald did not remember whether he had

given his address in Fort Worth (at time of separation from the Marine Corps)

as place of entry into service or not.I

advised him to check with our local boain Fort Worth when he got back and maybe they would have a copy of his Report ofSeparation DD Form 214).

This Headquarters maintains sets of military regulations from the various armed

forces which jo int ly concern the Selective Service System. I checked these

regulations in an attempt to learn the exact procedure Mr. Oswald should follow

in making applicat ion for a change in type of discharge. I did not find the

regulation covering th is subject . I then gave Mr. Oswald a copy of an

information sheet (R6-1229)(copy attached) which l i s t s the locat ion of various

types of military records, so that he could write direct and request the

procedure for making the applicat ion for change in type of discharge.

During th is ent ire interview, which lasted for approximately 30 minutes, Mr.Oswald was very courteous.

- - .- - - -Mr. Dugger advised me to inform the FBI of my inowledge of this case.

Mr. Dugger cal led me on the telephone sometime during the morning of18 December and asked i f Mr. Oswald t any time mentioned to me that he had

l ived in Russia t one time. I told him no. Mr. Dugger asked me i f I saw

Mr. Oswald t the time he was supposedly _  t the Trek Cafe, 3100 South Congress.

I told him no. Mr. Dugger also asked i f Mr. Oswald had t any time during theinterview mentioned anything as to his mode of transportation. I told him no.

Mr. Dugger advised me that he was now ready to mail his report in to the

Washington, D.C. newspaper he represents.

l,ced ure for KGB officers stationed in embassies 11nd in consulatesto carry on tho normal duties of such a position in ttddition to theundercover activities.500 The Commiss ion has identified the Cubanconsul referred to in Oswald's letter as Senor Eusebio .-.zque (also :Ascue") , the man wi th whom Oswald argued at the Cuban Embassy

who was in f act replaced. The CIA advised the Com mission: '

We surm ise that the references in Oswald's 9 No vember letterto a man who had since been replaced must refer to Cuban ConsulEusebio Azque, who left Mex ico for Cuba on permanent trnnsferon 18 November 1963, four days before the assas::;ination. Azquehad been in Mexico for 18 years and it was kn own as early asSeptember 1963 that Azque was to be replaced. His replacement

did arriv e in September. Azque was scheduled to leave in Octo.ber hut did not leave until l 8 No vember.

We do not know wh o might have told Oswald that Azque orany other Cuban had been or was to be replaced, but we speculatethat Silvia Duran or some Soviet official might have mentionedit if Oswald complained about Azque's altercation with him.••1 .

When asked to explain the letter , Marina Oswald was unable to addanything to an understanding of its contents.••• Some light on its

possible meR.Ding can be shed by comparing it with the earlydta.ft. When the differences between the draft and the final docu-ment are studied, and especially when crossed-out words are takeninto account, it becomes apparent. that Os1"ald was intentionally beclouding the true state o affairs in order to ma.ke his trip to Mex icosound as mysterious and important as possible.

For example, the first sentence in the second paragraph of the letterreads, I was unable to remain in Mexico indefinily be ca use of mymexican visa restrictions wh ich was for 5 days only." The same sentence in the draft be, lins, before the words are crossed ou t , I wasunable to remain in Mexico City because I con sidered useless *'

As already mentioned, the Commission has good evidence that Os·

wald's tri p to Mexico was indeed "useless" and that he returned toTexus with that conviction. The first druft, therefore, spoke thetruth ; but Oswald rewrote the sentence to imply that. he had to leavebecause his visa w:.ts : tbout to expire. This is false; Oswnld's touristcard still had a full week to run when he departed from Mexico onOctober 3.013

The next sentence in the letter reads, I could not take a chance onreqesting a new visa unless I my real n:une, so I returned toUnited States." The f:.tct is that he did use his real name for histourist card , and in all dealings with t.he Cu ban Embassy, the Rm;sianEmbassy and elsewhere. Oswald did use the name o "Lee" on thetrip, but as indicated below, he did so only sporadically and p r ~ r tas the result of a clerical error. In the opmion of the Commtssion, based upon its knowledge of Oswa ld, the letter constitutes no morethan a clumsy effort to ingratiate himself with the Sov iet E mbassy.
