fIt, carry and cOMfOrt In pack desIGn

We choose specific shapes, sizes, and materials for our pack

bodies, suspensions, hipbelts and harnesses with great attention

to detail. It is crucial to understand how the load transfers from

pack to body during dynamic movement. The result is a simple

to use but design complex system that gives us the reputation

as the best carrying and most comfortable packs on the market.

suspensIOns

lightWire™ peripheral frames use varying thickness of

alloy that run around the outside of the backpanel and connect

directly to the hipbelt. This balances weight to the shoulders and

hips for comfortable carry with no hot spots. It also allows the

backpanel to better conform to the user for superb support

and pack balance.

hdpe backpanel uses varying thicknesses of high-density

polyethylene to build a plate that fully forms the backpanel of

the pack. This provides pack structure and weight transfer to

the shoulders and hips. This can be used in conjunction with our

LightWire™ frame for larger packs. For our heaviest load haulers

we also use an aluminum stay that is built directly into the

backpanel.

airspeed™ backpanel uses our LightWire™ peripheral frame to

create a 3D tensioned mesh backpanel with a low profile air space

behind it. This provides superior ventilation while fully conforming

to the user for additional support and stability.

fIt

For larger volume packs designed to carry heavier loads, the

amount of sizes and adjustment options increase. We also offer

size ranges specific to both men and women. Many of our packs

have adjustable torsos to dial the distance from your iliac crest to

your C7. We also offer packs with adjustable hipbelts to correctly

wrap your hips. On our largest load carrying packs we offer

interchangeable components to create a full custom fit.

Our Bioform4CM™ and Isoform4 CM™ hipbelts on our xenith/xena

and Aether/Ariel series continue our history of innovative custom

moldable hipbelts. using an Osprey oven at your local CM™

certified dealer allows you to mold your belt to your unique

anatomy for superior comfort, load control and support.

ShOuLDER hARNESSThe shoulder harness is designed with thoughtful angle changes

and varying padding thickness to create an anatomical fit for

a woman’s neck, shoulders and chest. This is balanced with

optimizing where the tension from the pack’s load is carried.

For women, our sternum strap is a key piece in equalizing the

pressure across the shoulder harness. The padding used is

also specific in order to be more comfortable when carrying

a heavy load.

PACK’S ShAPEThe pack’s shape is patterned to be more narrow and with

added depth in the right places. This allows greater freedom of

movement and increases stabilization by lowering the position

of the load to a more optimal center of gravity. As a result,

the load is more proportionately supported on the hips and

along the structure of the back.

hIPBELTThe hipbelt is designed with thoughtful angle changes and

varying padding thickness to create an anatomical fit. The hipbelt

is also narrower in height for better comfort so it doesn’t dig

into the ribs or upper thighs when scrambling or climbing.

Most importantly, women’s hips are more conically shaped with

a larger difference between the waist and hip measurements.

We sculpt and angle our hipbelts accordingly for comfortable

load transfer and optimal support. Again the padding used

is also specific in order to be more comfortable when carrying

a heavy load.

with those requirements in mind. A beefed up version of

the proven LightWire™ peripheral frame suspension creates

the structure, while the all-new BioForm4 CM™ hipbelt and

harness provide a supportive and highly customizable fit.

Zippers on each side of pack provide quick access

to gear in main compartment. Curved path relieves

stress on zipper for smooth action and creates a

generous opening. Side compression straps don’t

interfere with entry.

cOnvertIble tOp lId

The removable top lid converts to a quality lumbar

pack for side trips. The built-in belt stores behind

the padded, ventilated lumbar pad when not in use.

New hipbelt pockets provide secure storage that’s

The trampoline tensioned mesh backpanel will fit

anyone’s contours and maintains airflow for

excellent ventilation. Soft, supportive shoulder

straps have strategically placed ventilating

holes and breathable spacer mesh contact surfaces.

tOrsO lenGth adJustMent

Release the cam buckle in the center of the back

panel and the ventilated shoulder straps are free

to glide up and down over a 6” / 15cm adjustment

range. The screenprinted scale makes it quick to

position accurately. lock the buckle down and the

yoke is fixed securely. It’s the fastest, easiest

adjustment system out there.

fIt-On-the-fly™ adJustable hIpbelt

The fit of the hipbelt is critical to comfortable carry.

Remember, kid carriers are often freighting loads

that exceed typical backpacking weights. Our design

allows the belt to be adjusted while wearing, with

pads able to extend 3” / 7.5cm on each side. Simply

separate the overlay pad and pull it forward. Press

down on the hook and loop fastener to fix the pad

in place. This Osprey exclusive design ensures

excellent fit and load transfer.

market, we knew it had to be groundbreaking in all respects –

carrying water should never compromise fit, comfort or

stability in a pack. The Osprey hydraulics™ reservoir is now

entirely designed and manufactured by Osprey, carrying

forward key innovations while offering major improvement

to many features. Combined with excellent reservoir-to-pack

integration, superior technical features and the best gender-

specific pack-to-body fit and performance available, our hands

free hydration program takes another giant leap. We are also

proud to introduce Osprey hydraulics™ Cleaning Tablets -

all natural, biodegradable and chlorine free.

For 2013 we’ve redesigned our reservoir and significantly

updated most of our hydration packs. The new hydraulics™

Reservoir builds on the successful concepts behind the first

generation. Entirely designed and manufactured by Osprey,

of polyethylene with the added benefit

of extra strength over typical PE films.

The “M” in MPE stands for metallocene,

a special catalyst used in the manufacture

of the PE resin. It forms a PE that is more

consistent and even in structure, resulting

in greater strength and resiliency, making

it ideal for reservoirs. This added durability

allows it to handle hot water. It is BPA

& PVC free, of course.

a wider and lower profile. A traditional

reservoir barrels out and forms a straight

tube when filled, interfering with a pack’s

ability to fit the body. The hydroStatic™

plate shapes the reservoir to ensure pack

The Contrail accessory bags use our innovative

Handle-It™ attachment system to connect to our

HighRoad™ Chassis handle (or any similar sized

double-tube handle). The key element is a stiff

panel with an open slot that folds down against

the accessory bag backpanel and is held in place

by magnets. Flip up the panel and slip the slot

over the extendible handle on the roller to hang

the bag, and it creates a very stable connection.

Compared to traditional sleeve designs which put

the additional weight high on the handle, making

the roller feel heavier, our design keeps the

additional load well-balanced and directly over

the wheels.

The Meridian/Sojourn backpack suspension is far more refined and technical

than what’s found on other convertible rollers. It is fully and easily adjustable for

torso length. The trampoline mesh backpanel provides outstanding comfort and

ventilation, while the spacer mesh covered hipbelt and shoulder straps cushion the

load. A second slot in the mesh backpanel increases the adjustment range to cover

torso lengths from 16” to 22”. As an added bonus, the shoulder strap and waistbelt

assemblies are removable to free up extra packing space on trips where they won’t

be needed.

A properly fit harness should terminate 2 to 3” beneath

the armpit. Webbing should not touch the body.

By breaking the hook and loop connection and sliding

the harness up and down the backpanel the torso

Osprey is proud to be an official corporate sponsor of the

San Juan Mountains Association matching the first $2,000 in

donations made during local public radio station KSJD’s annual

Spring Fund Drive with a matching donation to SJMA. The San

Juan Mountains Association (www.sjma.org ) promotes education,

volunteer stewardship, information and hands on involvement

on public lands in Southwest Colorado and Osprey supports

them on many levels in these outstanding efforts.

Osprey’s Pro Deal Donation Program requires a $2.00 donation

to select nonprofit organizations for each pack obtained via

pro purchase. 2011 saw a total of $10,470.00 raised through the

program with the recipients being The Breast Cancer Fund,

The Women’s Wilderness Institute, The Colorado Environmental

Coalition, The American hiking Society and The Conservation

Alliance. The 2012 Pro Deal Donation recipients are SOS

Outreach, Paradox Sports, The Alaska Wilderness League and

The International Mountain Biking Association. Osprey’s efforts

via the Pro Deal Donation Program raises valuable funding for

these important nonprofits and helps to support the valuable

work they provide.

2012 has seen Osprey purchase its first two official company

vehicles and we chose the most efficient and sustainable

vehicles available-two new Kona bicycles! These two new bikes

will be used by Osprey Team Members to run company and

personal errands as well as to travel from one Osprey distribution

center to another and we are excited to incorporate them into

our daily Osprey lives. Cutting a four mile motorized trip out

of our schedules each workday can reduce our global warming

pollution by more than 1200 lbs. per year so this is a complete

no brainer for Osprey-plus, we just like to ride bikes!

In addition to our sponsorship support of the Breast Cancer

Fund’s annual Climb Against the Odds, Osprey also sponsors a

Team Member each year to participate in this important climb

raising funds and awareness for the important work BCF does in

combating and eliminating the environmental causes of breast

cancer. 2012 will see Osprey customer service representative

Shannon hahn participate in the June climb of Mount Shasta and

we are proud to once again be involved in these fantastic efforts.

Looking forward, important 2012 sustainability explorations will

be undertaken by Osprey for potential 2013 implementation.

These include an exploration of solar panel installation to provide

all of the power needs to Osprey’s Cortez, Colorado headquarters

and an ongoing packaging solutions project to eliminate any and

all plastics packaging from the Osprey product line. These are

big projects representing bold new sustainability steps forward

for Osprey so please stay tuned for further details as they

develop throughout 2012.
